I recently moved to Charlottesville and was nervous about finding a veterinarian that would meet my high expectations. Dr. Epstein is extremely patient, friendly, and knowledgable. The office staff are so sweet and made my experience wonderful. It's obvious that everyone in this hospital genuinely cares about me and my special pets. I'm generally a very nervous owner, but they made me me feel completely at ease. WONDERFUL! I hope my dog doesn't get sick anytime soon, but I will definitely be coming back to Ivy Square and Dr. Epstein for checkups and anything else. more

Experienced, Informed, and Caring Vet- Great Hospital! 6/12/2011

I too had a great experience with my vet. Dr. Epstein is experienced, warm, caring, informed, patient and more. He took care of my baby with exquisite sensitivity. It was a positive experience for my cat and for me. He returns my calls. He is just an overall helpful, super supportive gentleman- a wonderful doctor. My cat responds favorably to him, the vet technicians and the entire staff whenever we visit. The vet assistant, Jennifer, was particularly sensitive with my pet and supportive in assisting me with administering medication. more

For anyone searching for a top rate veterinarian, we want to recommend Dr. Epstein! We couldn't be more pleased with the care (from the doctor to the staff - what a class act) we've received during each and every visit. They are knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and compassionate! fantastic vets! 5/24/2011

We've taken our 2 cats and dog there, having transferred from another practice several years ago. We are so happy with the care and treatment from all the staff. They spend time in the exam room to answer all questions we have and seem very keyed into our visit rather than rushing to the next client. We also experienced our first pet loss with them. I can't imagine a more gentle time while we said goodbye to 1 of our cats. I highly recommend them! more

Small show/pet shihtzu breeder 7/30/2010

I am a small shihtzu breeder,\r Dr. Epstein is kind and gentle to all the dogs and puppies I have brought in for a visit.\r I take the moms in for a prebirth exam and then a wellness exam for the babies\r One instance Sydney one of my female shihtzu was in hard labor and no babies. I called Dr. Epstein he told me to come inwith her\r I had my daughter with me in the car just in case a baby did come.\r When we got to Animal Hospital a room was ready for Sydney. Dr, Epstein came in did a little magic and within minutes Sydney had her first healthy baby, He invited us to stay to have the rest of the babies.\r Which she had five more and he only charged us for a regular visit\r Amazing ............. Dr. Epstein said they love puppies\r He always takes the time to talk to me and I always learn something when I visit.\r If I ever have a question after hours he always has contacted me and took the time to explain things I have never experienced before, sometimes Mother Nature throws a fluke\r His staf more

Groomazing! 5/6/2010

The people who work here are great. They don't just treat your pet, they CARE for your pet. And the in house groomer Jonathan does an amazing job. I wouldn't take my babies to anyone else! He clearly loves animals. He noticed a skin issue on my dog while bathing him before it became a real problem. You just drop your pet off in the morning and you get a call when it is done. Super convenient for my schedule! He told me he can even groom cats, ferrets, and bunnies. I'd like to see the lion cut he was talking about for cats! It sounds adorable! He clearly knows his stuff. The best part is that his prices are hands down the best in town. Even though the vet prices are a bit more, you get the best care in town here, and the low grooming prices totally balance things out! more

THANK YOU FROM OUR ENTIRE FAMILY AND MONA 9/6/2009

I want to thank Dr. Epstein and Dr. Barimo and the staff of the Animal Hospital of Ivy Square for helping my family through a tough time. Our family pet was diagnosed with cancer at a very young age. We had so many questions, and both doctors spent hours on the telephone with us and specialists to get answers to each one of them. These doctors are the most compassionate and caring. I don't know what we would have done without their support. Mona is in full remission now after receiving chemotherapy and a surgery, and we are all relieved and loving having our lovely dog back home again. more

Caring, Professional, Honest, and Thorough 8/24/2009

Dr. Epstein and his staff are very thoughtful and clearly explain what they are doing to your pet. I never felt as though he was trying to push additional services or treatments on our dog. He takes the time to listen and to get to know you and your pet. Vets in Charlottesville are generally expensive, but Dr. Epstein and his staff treat you fairly and honestly. I shopped around once and the other offices were not friendly or welcoming to my questions. Dr. Epstein's staff always go out of their way to help, which is very refreshing. I would choose this Doctor! 8/24/2009

Even though it was on a day that his clinic was closed, Dr. Epstein called me back soon after I left a message about coming in for the first time. He and his assistant were very friendly and professional and put me at ease. While we were in the office, he discovered that the two "lumps" on the longhaired cat's belly were cysts. He examined them closely and carefully removed them right there in the office, explaining what he was doing, and he didn't charge extra for it. He was very gentle with the cats and explained everything he was doing. He made recommendations and explained his reasoning for them. I feel confident that Dr. Epstein will take very good care of my two cats. My household recently expanded to include a large dog, and I will be bringing him to Dr. Epstein, as well. New Doctor here is AMAZING! 7/11/2009

I love Dr. B! They have a new vet at this hospital- a woman who I absolutely adore! My dog does not usually like going to the vet, but she was kind and patient and even sat on the floor with my dog. She took her time and answered all of my questions and made my baby feel back to his normal self. By the end of the visit, my dog was sitting in her lap (which has NEVER happened at any vet visit, anywhere). Absolutely amazing! I think she is there on Fridays, so make your appointment then and ask for the female doctor. To the last poster- remember that you get what you pay for. Might have been a tad more expensive, but worth every penny. more

Dr. Epstein is very kind and very smart. Prices here are the highest in town. The staff changes monthly. Dr. Epstein is gone a lot. Prices for visits, examinations, tests, and drugs here are too high--bares repetition. more

THE BEST STAFF AND DOCTOR!!! 3/28/2009

I HIGHLY recommend this hospital! Dr. Epstein and his staff made my children and pets feel welcome! My pet Charlie fell down the stairs, and was in a lot of pain. The vet was so gentle and thorough, and the doctor and the staff really helped me through a difficult time. As it turns out, Charlie ruptured his spleen and had to have it removed. I have been to several hospitals in the past, and this one is definitely the best! more

My new Veterinarian is wonderful!!! 3/2/2009

I moved to Charlottesville recently, and was looking for a Veterinarian who would spend the time to help me with some of my special needs pets. I must say that I was so impressed with the staff and the doctors here. The staff was was the friendliest and most courteous I have encountered. I was really attached to my last Veterinarian, and was worried that it would be hard to begin again with a new doctor. The staff was so kind and professional-- and they ALL came out to meet my Harry. They even took his picture with me! \r Harry is usually a bit suspicious of veterinarians-- a bit selective, I must say.The doctor was very gentle. and he and the staff took so much time to answer all of my questions. I wish that my own doctor's office staff was this wonderful!\r They called me the next day to check on Harry, and I just got a great note from all of the staff welcoming me. WOW! Try them. more

AWFUL AND RUDE! 2/22/2009

I took my cat there when I first moved to Charlottesville. They are overpriced, and the vet rushes thru your visit. his assistant jennifer was VERY RUDE. She rolled her eyes a lot when I was telling her about my cats medical history and acted very irritated that I was there. Then she took my cat into the back and made me wait in the room for forever while they did who knows what. My cat came back to the room shaking. I dont feel comfortable taking my cat back there ever again. Try Earlysville- they are very nice. more

I've had positive experiences here over 12 years. Both Drs. Epstein and Mayrose treated me with much empathy and most importantly, they followed my lead. At times when i wanted to treat aggressively, they would do so, and times when i wanted a hands-off approach, they were also very supportive. more

I recently had to put my cat to sleep and took him to the Animal Hospital of Ivy Square. I was amazed and touched to receive from the office a few days later a letter of condolence signed by the doctor and the entire staff. I think they really go out of their way to make the difficult decision as peaceful as possible. It made a difference to me. more

Sometimes the Simplest Solution Is the Best. (And they don't offer it.) 10/24/2008

I took my first dog to Dr. Epstein at AHIS on the advice of my close friends...they have four cats and depended on AHIS for all of their vet care. My dog had serious behavioural issues (he was an adult from the pound) as well as terrible stomach problems. After two years of struggling with various meds, specialty diets, and x-rays (all recommended by Dr Epstein), my dog died of bloat while at a local kennel. I was devastated, but the staff was very kind.\r \r I returned to AHIS with my second dog and met Dr. Mayrose, who sadly has left the practice. She gave me a lot of practical advice about how to handle tummy problems with my new dog as well as her skin and behavioural issues. Best of all, these common-sense solutions worked and don't cost an arm and a leg!\r \r I still use AHIS as my vet, but it is almost entirely because of the very helpful, kind, and caring office staff and vet techs. more

Most Caring and Compassionate and Knowledgable 9/14/2008

These vets are the most caring and compassionate I have come across with my pets. I have been an animal lover and have a pet Buffy, who is the love of my life. She was misdiagnosed at another hospital nearby with a blood disorder which they could not pinpoint. The vet there said there was little they could do to help her, and that I would have to put her to sleep. Needless to say, I was shattered. Upon the advice of several friends, I went to Dr. Epstein for a second opinion. and he almost immediately diagnosed her condition!!! She is now fine, after some simple treatment with medicines for her blood condition. His staff called me each and every day for the first week after my visit with Buffy-- I have never gotten attention like this from any of my other vets or their staff. Incidentally, the staff is the warmest and most caring you could imagine. They all spent time loving on Buffy and I never felt rushed. In fact, other people were busy bringing in treats for them, and I have never more
