Fabulous & Fresh Mexi-Cali Menu 7/28/2008

I make it a point to eat here every time I'm in L.A. - and don't let the discovery that this unassuming little place is in a strip mall - this food is wonderful. If there's a wait - it's worth it. NOTE: A reviewer in February mistook this place for some place called Antonio and put her bad experience under Alegria's on Sunset's reveiw. Pros: The food! Cons: It's not a ""romantic"" wine and dine place. more

The food is always fresh! 6/16/2008

Alegria offers your typical Mexican fare except its extra fresh! I recommend their burrito and try one of their ""waters."" For the most part, the staff is friendly and willing to explain their take on familiar dishes. You're probably better off trying it out for lunch since its not as crowded. The parking lot is always full and there's little off street parking to speak of, since it competes with other local restaurants. more

not that great, even scary at times 2/25/2008

My party went to Antonio's for lunch. The employees were late so they opened up about 30 minutes late. Though we were hungry, we waited to try this place, especially after the reviews I read. The service and food were just ok. Nothing special at all. The guac was just one step up from the flourescent green goop you get at a convenience store. The liquid they tried to pass off as a margarita was putrid! I have never tasted anything like it. The best thing about Antonio's is their 'history'. My friend's salad looked fresh. At least it wasn't expensive more

Wish it was as good as it used to be. 1/5/2008

I used to live right up the street from Alegria and I went there at least once a week and thought it was the best Mexican food in LA. I no longer live up the street so I don't go nearly as much as I used to, but I still go frequently and the place has unfortunately gone downhill. Things just aren't as good as they used to be. Sometimes the food is dry, sometimes over-salted, sometimes just not fresh. My biggest pet peeve is when they give you their pica de gallo and it's basically a bowl of onions. This place needs to get it's groove back. The menu is still great, the service is usually okay, but it seems like they've lost some pride in their work. Pros: the best mexican in the city, fresh made juices, amazing potato tacos, BYOB Cons: Sometimes there can be a wait to sit down more

Best Local Breakfast Spot 12/31/2007

We moved to Silverlake a few months ago and being the foodie that he is, my b.f. quickly found the best breakfast spot in the neighborhood. Having lived in this area before, I've tried most of the other Sunset eateries and while their food is generally pretty good, the wait time, lack of friendly service, and patrons more interested in being seen (and heard) than enjoying a mellow morning make the experience generally unpleasant. Not Alegria. Pros: great service, great food more

Great place - a must try! 12/5/2007

This place is great! Good food, great atmosphere and you can bring your own beer. The food is delish and the guacamole is the best I have come across in ages. The waitstaff is courteous and effiicient. Cons: Small parking lot and at times the wait can be kinda long. more

Mexican Favorites with an Authentic-Yet-Healthy Twist 11/1/2007

Alegria is so unassuming with it's strip-mall locale, but it's an excellent--and charming--dining option. You might have to wait for a table--especially if you plan to dine with a group larger than 4--but it's worth the wait (no reservations accepted). They specialize in unique Mexican offerings, typically with a healthy / vegetarian-inspired twist. Try one of their fresh-squeezed juices--from honeydew to orange-strawberry-watermelon. Pick whatever combo you want! They don't have a liquor license, but you can BYOB for a nominal corkage fee. more

Mexican with a different twist! 10/29/2007

This is a fun little alternative place in Silverlake. A fun, relaxed environment - a little funky hipster but fine for families & couples, all the same. Bring your own beer/wine. Cash only. Not open Sunday. Pros: Great food. Fun decor. Different twist on Mexican food. Cons: Cash Only, Closed Sunday, Far from the Westside, Parking more

LOVE IT 10/16/2007

Absolutely adore this place. Staff is always friendly, food is always great! Great value for the price, and food somehow feels more healthy than most Mexican restaurants. Love the carnitas and fresh juices. The salsa fresca with cut cucumbers is addicting. This place is always a cute cozy, low key place. Just don't forget your cash...the nearest ATM is a few blocks away. WISH YOU GUYS WERE OPEN ON SUNDAYS! Pros: great food and service and very low key Cons: not open sundays and cash only more

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE: Can't get enough!! 7/13/2007

This is one of our favorite restaurants EVER-- in LA or elsewhere... My husband and I have been frequenting Alegria at least once a week for the past five years and have been known to have it twice in one day. My girlfriend and I refer to their Veggie Burritos as crack-burritos because we are seriously addicted! The staff is amazing- always warm, easy-going and fun- and the atmosphere is the same. Random Sunset Blvd. strip mall and Day of the Dead decor-- you'd never know unless you know, but this place can get packed at ALL hours! BYOB with no corkage, DELISH chips, salsa & guac and CHEAP prices make this a local fave for hipsters and families alike. A close Mexican friend once told me it's the only Mexican food she'll eat in LA!! Put your name on the list, head to the liquor store down the street for wine and cash (no credit cards accepted) and know it's well worth the wait! Pros: FAB food & staff Cons: not open on Sunday :( more

Best Authentic Mexican Food 4/14/2007

The brightest gem hides...in a strip mall. People, this place is fantastic. As you will slowly begin to realize, the Fat Guy loves food. I love the experience of eating out. I have been known to love a place because it creates an event even if the food is mediocre...Alegria fits the bill. Unassuming and simple. These guys can cook. The pozole was the best that I have had since I was in Mexico...Flavorful, hearty, and belly warming. I had a steak (skirt, I think) that was just bursting with flavor. Everything that my date and I greedily put into out mouths was worth the affordable price. One of those rare places that you find yourself returning to time and again. Pros: Quality of food, service, price Cons: parking, no reservations more

Best Mexican Food in L.A. 2/28/2007

This a wonderful gem tucked in a small strip mall in the Silver Lake area. Food is amazing. I have never had anything like this and thinking about just make my mouth water for their Pollo en Mole and chicken enchiladas. I also highly recommend the tacos con cream, hard shell taquitos filled with potatos top with fresh salsa and creme fraiche (yum!). Entrees run from $10 to $15 and portions are huge. It is BYOB and no corkage fee. I recommend getting there early so you can put your name down on the list because it can get packed and you may have to wait awhile. Pros: food, service, ambience more

Healthy Mexican food 11/17/2006

Don't let the run down shopping mall that Alegria is housed in fool you, this tiny place is actually serves some of the best Cali- Mex food in LA. The portions are pretty decent size and the food is healthy and lite-- this is not a place for burritos drenched in beans and cheese. Try the Jason's burrito-- awesome! Pros: Food, Cons: No alcohol, parking can be rough sometimes more

Best Menudo 11/5/2006

Best menudo in Los Angeles. Just like my grandma used to make. Perfect blend of tripe, homony and spices. Delicious. I go there just for the menudo. I have been to other places where they make menudo and they tend to make it too salty. Alegria gets it just right. Better get there early on Saturdays though, I have went there and they sell out of the menudo if you get there too late. Pros: Good value, good portions, nice people Cons: No cons - I luv this place more

Love this place 9/26/2006

A bunch of us have been going to Alegria recently after our Tuesday night training run and I love it!! Besides having awesome food, this place has the BEST fresh juices - I find myself wanting to drive to Silver Lake just to get their fresh watermelon juice!! more

The food is so freaking good here 9/14/2006

Get the Tacos Dorados with Chicken, and you will thank me. Everything at this place is so delicious, including the staff, which is super friendly. I have to stop myself from going to this place once a week. more
