I make it a point to eat here every time I'm in L.A. - and don't let the discovery that this unassuming little place is in a strip mall - this food is wonderful. If there's a wait...

My party went to Antonio's for lunch. The employees were late so they opened up about 30 minutes late. Though we were hungry, we waited to try this place, especially after the r...

Take Cash! 4/20/2006

I highly recommend this place. It's cheap, home-cooked, and tastes amazing. The only thing is they only take cash, so stop at an ATM on your way over. more

for Fresh-Mex fans 11/27/2005

If you can ignore the utterly annoying hipster patronage, this is a great spot for light eaters. The recipes are actually derivative of the Mexican food typical to Arizona, brought to light by the restaurants founder. The food is light, fresh, and flavorful, a nice alternative for anyone not wanting the typically heavy, grease-saturated Mexican food, which is also great of course. Fresh juice is made on-site, and there are always a plenty of daily specials. Also, the service is really prompt and friendly. The atmosphere is rather distracting however; the decorations are almost as loud as the customers that sometimes frequent at the busiest hours. However, its still comfortably informal and inexpensive. I recommend the chicken chimichanga, its surprisingly light for a fried burrito, and yet still satisfying. Pros: Informal, Inexpensive, Quality Cons: Atmostphere, Trendy, Crowded more

Very enjoyable 11/23/2005

Food was great. Service was great. I would go back anytime, and would like so I could try out everything on their menue. We had the cheese enchaladas and they were wonderful! more

User review by placecard 9/28/2005

I'm a regular, not because I like strip malls with little to no parking, but rather - because of the amazingly conscientious service and the awesome food. Best things on the menu - the Budin (something I can't remember right now that looks like Montezuma) and the Crabcakes (under a moniker), though I don't like the cactus salad and always pass on the rice and get regular salad instead. They are so cool with special orders and also the guacamole is AMAZING (half orders available upon request). The fish tacos were voted best in LA and it's BYOB so you can eat for 2 for $22-30 bucks. Anyone who thinks this isn't a fanatastic restaurant probably enjoys eating at Del Taco and paying for overpriced bar drinks. Plus, the owner WANTS TO KNOW if something doesn't measure up. Pros: Inexpensive, Flavorful, Cheap - BYOB Cons: Parking, Crowded 7p-10p, Decor is Sun Heavy more

Fabulous! 9/20/2005

If you are looking for beans and rice, head to Taco Bell. If you want Mexican food like you have never tasted before in LA, come here. We have been there four times and it has been absolutely delicious each time. We have taken others who are also very impressed with the quality of food and service. Great specials. Great food. Location sucks a little, decor is a little eclectic... but if I want a white table cloth restaurant with usually mediocre food, I have a very long list to chose from. I love being able to bring in my own wine and beer, too. Pros: specials, service Cons: cheap wine opener, wine glasses more

Authentic gem in a mini-mall! 6/9/2005

C'mon, you don't get better than this. These two ladies have produced the best Mexican cuisine in Los Angeles ... in a mini-mall, no less! Yeah, it's the tiniest restaurant you've ever seen, and you'll probably wait for a table, but you have got to taste those dobladitos. Everything is fresh, from the chips and guac to the tortillas. The salsa is wonderful, particularly with the mango added in. Because there's such limited space in the restaurant, we call our order in and take the food home. But the staff is welcoming and really personable. We love Alegria! more

Mexican food that doesn't hurt the tummy! 4/15/2005

Don't get me wrong, I love tradtional salty and rich Mexican food ... but sometimes my fragile belly can't handle it. This place is great if you want healthy Mex. The ingredients were super fresh and I easily scarfed down a well marinated chicken burrito. The pico de Gallo was good when mixed with the hotsauce, but I kind of wished they would bring out bigger bowls of the chips. If you bring some Bohemias, this place can be a nice and affordable eatery. Pros: Healthy, BYOB Cons: Small place more

Great place, but oh so CROWDED 8/15/2004

This is definitely a hipster joint. If you don't know the rules, you may not even get seated. You should rent Swingers before coming here. Actually, there aren't enough tables for Alegria (or as the locals call it: ""Leg"") to take on any new clientele, so if you're thinking about coming, make sure to swing by 'off-peak.' Also, they don't serve alcohol, so it's BYOB. As for the food, the mole is great. more

Mexican Food for Gringos 8/3/2004

Authentic Mexican food - it's not, but if you're looking for a glorified Baja Fresh, then this is the place for you. The salsa is, basically, fresh chopped tomatoes and onions, offering little reward for the physical challenge of scooping them up without breaking your chip, and then hoisting it to your mouth without everything falling off (ok, I'm a klutz). The rice and black beans were equally flavorless, the rice being too salty (as someone else here pointed out). The enchiladas en mole were packed with chicken, and the sauce was decent, but scant. Not a Mexican customer in the house, it appeared. I don't know what all the fuss is about. I won't be going back. Pros: "wholesome" food more

Unlike any other ""Mexican"" food! 10/7/2003

Alegria has the best chimichanga I've ever had. Hands down. It's amazing that something deep fried can be so light and not greasy at all. Pair it with an order of quacamole and an agua fresca -- a delightful, not-too-sweet concoction of fruit, ice and water that falls somewhere between a snow-cone, a slushy, and fruit juice. Save room and split a chocolate chimichanga for dessert! Pros: inexpensive, no attitude Cons: cash only, occasional wait, parking more

The Worst Mexican Food Ever 7/22/2003

If you like bad service, a waitress with an attitude, and bad, overpriced food (for what it is) Alegria is the place for you! The rice was very salty and inedible, and the mole sauce could have been better. To top it off, our waitress didn't even ask once if everything was ok, but managed to hit the other ten tables in the place. There is NO Alegria in the service. The place is packed and fill of hipsters who think this is the 'new place to be'. It ain't. I was excited to eat here, but I'd rather eat horrible Pro-Life Domino's pizza that is located in the same strip mall. Pros: nada, zip, zilch Cons: bad food, bad service/attitude, bad location more

Cosmo's Best Of.... 7/11/2003

Alegria on Sunset is one of the best home cooked, health conscious Mexican Restaurant that we've had the pleasure to dine at. Where else are the welcoming chips and salsa home made? Using canola oil, and creating a home made salsa with lots of cilantro, garlic and other spices - you know that this is a place that prepares meals for you much like meals prepared in someone's home, cooked with love and care. The mole, pumpkin seed is my favorite, is consistently surprising in it's subtle yet complex flavors. The carnitas, and I am kosher, make me break the law at times as the meat is so flavorful that it makes me think of kalua pig back home in Hawaii, the real stuff for kamaianas (locals). This is a real find for anyone from novice to the L.A. scene or gourmand. Keep it up, Nadine, Denise and Jackie! Pros: great food, homey ambience, friendly service Cons: long lines, worth it, no pics of Cosmo more

Great Mexican 10/21/2002

It's easy to miss, but worth the effort to find it. I've never been disappointed. This is the place we take all our out-of-towners to eat wonderful, authentic Mexican. Prices are very reasonable. Cute, funky atmosphere. It's BYOB!!! But they only take cash, no plastic. Pros: lovely people, funky atmosphere more

Holy Mole 6/18/2002

I've only been there a couple of times, but the mole sauce is seriuosly the best I've ever had. This is a great restaurant: great food, excellent presenation, good use of citrus, warm casual atmosphere, and very friendly staff. Don't let the strip mall location fool you, Alegria is a top notch Mexican restaurant. Pros: Mole Sauce, Good Prices, Great Service Cons: Parking more

Good Food, Long Wait 6/5/2002

Despite the fact that our group had to wait nearly 45-minutes for a table (on a Sat. night), we still had a great time. The food was marvelous (I highly recommend anything with the mole sauce, the layered, fritatta, tortilla-type thing and the chips, salsa and guacamole) and the service was friendly and helpful. Be sure to bring cash though, as they do not take credit cards. Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Price Cons: Wait, Cash Only, BYOB more
