This was my first and definately last visit to this extremely over-rated restaurant. While the food was decent (although i've definately had much better in the pittsburgh area), ...

Pleasantly surprised! 10/14/2008

When I would pass this restaurant in the past, I always thought it was bar food, greasy and fried. But a friend suggested we go there one night and I am sooo glad we did. The place was quaint, a great place for a date with someone special. The food was delicious and the presentation was very classy. The service was friendly and just the right amount of quickness. Didn't make you feel rushed, but you weren't waiting for your food forever. I highly recommend this restaurant, its a must try. Pros: Great food, Great Service Cons: Because its soo good, there is a wait time, but its well worth it. more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS 10/13/2008

I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED AFTER EATING HERE. ALTHOUGH THE ESTABLISHMENT WAS CUTE AND COZY, THE STAFF WAS UPTIGHT AND NOT VERY FRIENDLY. I ALSO WAS VERY DISAPOINTED IN THE FOOD, I ORDERED VEAL AND IT WAS VERY BLAND AND TOUGH, ALTHOUGH MY HUSBAND'S DISH WAS OK. I WAS INTERRUPTED BY THE CHEF IN THE MIDDLE OF MY MEAL WHICH WAS QUITE BOTHERSOME. IF YOU WANT A PRIVATE SETTING THIS IS NOT THE PLACE. Pros: CUTE SETTING, GOOD LOCATION Cons: TOO SMALL, I FELT SQUEEZED IN, LOW QUALITY FOOD, NO PARKING more

Good food, nice date spot 6/30/2008

I took my girlfriend to the 17th street cafe on a satruday night around 9:30. Parking was difficult to find so we used the valet parking across the street ($5). We were promptly seated in the small backroom and were greated by the chef. We ordered drinks, which were tasty and reasonably priced. more

Great Food, good price! 2/14/2008

We went here last weekend for my boyfriend's birthday. The only downfall was there were no reservations, but we sat at the bar and chatted with the friendly waitress who served us drinks. The food was amazing! Everyone was raving about their dish. I had scallops in a cream sauce and most of our party got veal (which everyone said was good). We had tiramisu for dessert which was also fantastic. The food was very good and not too expensive (about $22 a dinner), the atmosphere was nice, and the staff was very friendly. I already started recommending it to my friends! Pros: Great food, decent price, nice atmosphere Cons: Not sure if they have reservations, not a lot of seating more

slow gift certificate delivery 8/29/2007

After reading all of the raving reviews on this website I decided to purchase a gift certificate for my parents on their anniversary. While they reside in Pittsburgh, I live out-of-state (in NY), so I called the restaurant to purchase the gift certificate. I paid over the phone with my credit card, which was promptly charged. However my parents did not receive the gift certificate until 7 days later, a day AFTER their anniversary. I can't imagine why it took the restaurant so long to mail it. I figured that it would only take a day or two in the mail since it was a local mailing address . I even purposely held-off on buying the certificate so they wouldn't receive it too early...what a mistake. I was embarrassed on their anniversary when it appeared that I hadn't given them anything, but I'm still hoping that they'll enjoy their dinner. Overall, I think this may be a good restaurant for locals, but they don't seem to be able to accommodate special requests. more

A wonderful dining experience! 7/6/2007

My husband and I went to this restaurant because we had a coupon. We couldn't believe we had never heard of or been to this fantastic little gem hidden away on 17th street. The atmosphere is intimate, romantic, and friendly. The people couldn't be nicer. The wine that was recommended was the best cabernet I have had in years. The food was as good if not better than the description of it. If you have never been to the 17th St Cafe, you have to go. It is a wonderful dining experience. Pros: Atmosphere and food. Cons: Can't have large groups. more

This Restaurant Has it All! 6/28/2007

This restaurant has it all. The staff are friendly, knowledgable, and their service is excellent. The atmosphere has the flavor of a lovely Tuscan cafe - quiet, intimate and cozy. The food is consistently excellent. I have never had an average meal at this establishment. Their entree flavor combinations are interesting, exciting and ALWAYS delicious. The freshly made cappucinos are rich and flavorful, with the delicous after taste of chocolate and never bitter. The desserts are wonderful - BUT their best dish is the roasted red pepper bisque. It is absolutely superior to anything else I have sampled across the country! I highly recommend this restaurant and the soup is a must-have! more

I loved the ambience at the 17th Street Cafe 6/27/2007

Chic, urban and inviting - that is how I would describe the ambience at the 17th Street Cafe. My husband and I had one of those perfect nights dining here and I think the deep wood tones of the bar, the black table clothes and intimate setting were key. As a side note, if you enjoy a well-made martini, I found them here! more

Great place with ""real"" good people, with impeccable food & service 6/22/2007

I can not believe it took me so long to find one of the best restaurants in Pittsburgh I have ever entered. The service is always great and the food is wonderful every time. This quaint, elegant, restaurant great is a must...if you want to leave happy with everything. Pros: Consistently wonderful Cons: parking more

Great Atmosphere and Great Food 6/22/2007

The 17th Street Cafe is a great place to enjoy a meal with a loved one or friends. They have a good wine list and a variety of meal choices. The food comes in a decently sized portion, is excellent and not too expensive. You can sit outside on the street and enjoy the beautiful weather or in the nice inside of the restaurant. Service is prompt and the employees are all very friendly and attentive. Plus they also have a rewards program as a thank you to their customers, which is wonderful. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice, relaxing meal with friends or a nice, romantic dinner. You can't beat the value. more

Best cafe dining in Pgh. 6/21/2007

Wonderful atmosphere, casual dining. Excellent food. Pleasant experience to spend an evening, or lunch at this restaurant. My first visit was by chance, and i have returned many times, and will continue to patrinize this wondrful restaurant. The service is excellent, the manager always stops to ask about the food. Oh, and the coffee is the best......... Pros: Ambience, service, and excellent food. Cons: Parking, but it is worth the effort. more

The atmosphere is quiet and casual and the food is exceptional 6/21/2007

I started going to the 17th street cafe becuse of a coupon I had, after that first visit I became a 17th street groupie. The atmosphere is quiet and casual and the food is exceptional not to mention the drinks being generous. No matter if I am there for lunch or dinner, the chef/owner always comes to every table to ""talk to the patrons"". It seems like he is friends with everyone who is in the restaurant. I can't even recommend a dish since everything I have had has been great. See you there. more

Fantastic everything! 1/5/2007

I highly recommend this restaurant! We heard many good things about the place and decided to go on Saturday before New Year's Eve. We called to make a reservation at 4pm thinking we would not get a table, but wanted to try anyhow. We were told that seating for 2 could be accommocated and to just come on down and they would make sure we got a table in a reasonable time. So we did. We each ordered a mixed drink at the bar (nicely poured if you know what I mean) and before we finished them, our table was ready. We ordered the blue cheese filet and pan-fried salmon. Both were out of this world! I noticed that the table next to ours ordered the filet as well. All plates (including theirs) were nearly licked clean ~ and trust me, we are very civilized people. The icing on the cake to this great evening included the chef coming to our table and asking us if we enjoyed our meal. We will definitely be back!!!! Pros: Service superb, meal outstanding Cons: earlier dinner means better chance of parking closer (if you don't want valet) more

Concerned and Confused about Review Below 1/2/2007

My name is Pat Joyce. I am the owner of the 17th Cafe. I am confused about the review posted below. Because we are a small, independently owned restaurant, my wife Brigitte and I know that guest satisfaction is what keeps our place going. I do not recall even slightly the incidents which the previous person describes. First of all, we realize that we serve large portions, many of which our guests take home to enjoy later. My staff knows to ask before we throw out ANY uneaten food. Second, if such a mistake was made, I am certain that I would have my Chef prepare a new order, or take the meal off the check. I am thinking that perhaps the reviewer made a mistake on the restaurant? We get many phone calls for a restuarant with a similar name. If the problem did happen and I do not recall, I am truly sorry and resolve to make the situation right with this guest. more

Horrible Service!!! 12/13/2006

I absolutely wouldn't recomend this restaurant. After I didn't even finish half of my meal, which was actually quite good, the waiter took my dish from infront of me. When he returned to the table, I asked if he had boxed my meal; although I had seen him put it in a busers' dish pan, with other plates on top of my half-eaten meal. The server proceeded to go to the dish bin and take plates off of mine and had the audicity to try to give me the remainder of the meal. The manager/owner came over, I explained what had occurred and he mearly apologized. He didn't ask to make a new meal or remove that dish from our bill. He did however offer us a dessert which in no way was equvilant to the cost of the meal. He was able to see what was left of my meal, and it was a lot, yet didn't chose to remedy the problem. I couldn't believe that a relatively well-respected restaurant would hire such incompetent, lazy and unethical employees. Poor service deserves a poor review. more

Great food, affordable price for an upscale restaurant 7/27/2006

I really liked the restaurant. The food was really good and I am very picky when it comes to food. Considering that it is an upscale restaurant, the prices are affordable (16-25 for an entree). The service was also excellent. Pros: Excellent food, good value, good service Cons: Small seating area, not as romantic as I was expecting from certain reviews more
