Best

always courteous servers, staff and ambiance!

Worst

I'll only talk about the lounge upstairs, since I don't bother eating at the restaurant any longer (too pretentious and not that good). I liked the lounge uptairs in the past and...

Good food and service, but a poor wine list. 6/26/2006

I really love Benjy's - it's fun, classy, romantic, and the food is excellent. However, I don't know who made their wine list ""award winning."" There are few things on the by the glass list that are worth drinking, and now that they've gotten rid of the Au Beau Climate it is even harder to pick. It's tough to have such a great dinner with an $11 middle of the road glass of wine. Pros: food, ambience, service Cons: wine list more

$500 per hour !! WOW and still be treated like POO!! 6/22/2006

After having dined at this establishement for the last 4 years almost on a weekly basis I have to finally admit I will never return. This establishment was informed by my adminstrative assistant that tonight was a special occasion for a party of six. Despite our reservation at 6 pm we were refused seating since we were lacking a single person of our party by our ""little 20-year-old hostess"". Excuse me - some of us were still stuck at work. This was despite the fact that I had already told the hostess to any empty resturant that I wanted to get started with the members of the party that were already there. She informed me that this was the ""policy"". After having spent close to $1000 for a party of 6 the ""manager"" informed us that he need our table for another party at 9 pm and that this was secondary to the fact that we had arrived ""late"". No buddy - it was because your ""policy"" had refused us to get started!! Guess the college students are taking over. Good luck to the management for supporting it with these folks... we won't be bringing any more of our weekly meetings (or our $1000 a pop dinners) here again! If your are over 30 and are expecting serious consideration - move one and don't bother or waste your money. This place is soley for the teens/20 somethings.... Pros: Do you like to spend cash and still be treated badly!! Cons: Management off base!! more

One of the best in Houston! 5/23/2006

My girlfriend and I went to benjy's to celebrate her birthday, she has been many times with her girlfriends, this was my first time. We arrived a little early, so we went upstairs to the lounge for a drink. The lounge is a cozy space to relax and have a cocktail or a glass of wine. It was a little crowded, but we found an open couch and were promptly greeted by a cocktail server. After a drink, we went downstairs and were shown to our table. The food was delicious, I had the buffalo steak, my girlfriend had the crunchy chicken, both were excellent! After dinner, the waitress brought my girlfriend a piece of chocolate cake with a birthday candle, really a nice touch! I was very impressed with benjy's from the food to the service to the ambience, looking forward to returning soon! Highly recommended Pros: Great food and service more

WOW!!!! 7/15/2005

I've been wanting to go for a while, so my husband surprised me for my birthday. I was VERY impressed. We were 15 minutes late for our reservation and were still seated immediately! Waitstaff was at the table within seconds to check on me. Our waiter was fantastic!!!!! I was also impressed to see how the waitstaff helped one another, a real team effort!! The food was FABULOUS and unlike many upscale restaraunts, there was a lot of it!! They even gave me chocolate cake with ice cream and a candle on the house. Tell Keith (the manager) that Kristal sent you (HaHa), I told him I was going to write a review today and I kept my promise. FAB place, I reccomend it to EVERYONE!!!! Pros: Great Staff, Great Food, Ambiance Cons: Parking more

too much food! 5/31/2005

i've always said, ""i'll pay more money to get less food"" this is the case here. The food on the menu is exciting. but when you get the food, you get it served in a fish fry plate, platter! they give you so much food for your buck! the food was good, but the portions are enought to feed a family of four! with portions that large there is no room for presentation. presentation was mediocre. but i guess thats what you get for licing in texas, everything has to be bigger ... more

All good things must end... 5/24/2005

After going to Benjy's for years and thoroughly enjoying the experience... alas, the experience has gone steeply downhill. Where I once rated Benjy's as one of Houston's 10 Best... no more. You will enjoy your dining experience more at Pei Wei these days. The food has become pedestrian with a bit of flair... flair does NOT replace creative taste sensations! Our desert (apple tarte) was clearly an ""HEB desert"" stuck in the microwave and topped with a bit of that flair that added nothing. Wine selection has gone downhill... the bartender didn't even know what a Barbera or Malbec was, much less have one. Service staff has become borderline rude, inattentive and unknowledgable... our waitress could not remember what the specials were! We were jostled, bumped and ignored for most of the two hour visit. An hour of which was spent being ""next on the list"" for our table. It is truly sad when a place so wonderful falls so far. Oh, and all this lack was on a Wednesday night... not a holiday or weekend night. Beware of what should be a busy night! Pros: In Rice Village Cons: Noise, service, food, wine selection, price more

User review by as1an 4/17/2005

The sashimi pizza appetizer is definitely a must try if you like seafood. Our waitress was also very attentive to our needs. The only advice that I'll give is to think twice if you're on your first date. We had reservation and we still had to wait because our table wasn't ready yet. Furthermore, it gets pretty loud in the restaurant since the tables are so close together. more

Benjy's - Great, Not good for groups 4/6/2005

Benjy's has great food and even better happy hour. If you are going for a big party I wouldnt recommend it. I went with a group of 10 or so and it was a disaster. They kept taking our plates and glasses before we were finished. Rushing us for the table. We had reservations. Anyway, the food, as I said is good. I have been there many times for business lunches and romantic dinners. Great for both. Just not for groups. Pros: Food, Martinis, Happy Hour Cons: Parking, Hostess is rude more

Great everytime 12/27/2004

I've been here a few times now, and we've always had great food. When reservations were made, we were seated promptly. When we didn't make reservations, we hung out at the Lounge. I recommend the crusted chicken - I could have licked my plate clean, it was so good. In fact, every dish I've tried has been amazing. My only objection is that the restaurant can be noisy as it gets crowded quickly and the tables are close together. Pros: Cuisine, Ambiance Cons: , Too much A/C, Crowded and Noisy more

Wonderful Experience! 12/12/2004

We ate at Benjy's for brunch. I made reservations and we were seated with no problems. The waiter was very nice! I took the advice of citysearch and tried the stuffed french toast and I'm sure glad I did! My parents and husband had a wonderful dining experience and we look forward to going back. You can't go wrong here. The brunch was exceptional! Just be sure to make reservations because it can get packed! Pros: Excellent Food, Great Waitstaff, Good portions more

Great Food 8/28/2004

Forget the ""trendy"" thing and get down to the food and ambience...it's great. Unique dishes served very well. The crispy chicken is still untouchable. While it's not a bargain basement, it's not ripoff; good value for the money. Wine list is a little pricey but a good selection with wide price range. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Salads are priced a little high, but entrees are in line. Ahi Tuna is as good as it gets anywhere. You won't be dissappointed with anything but the closeness in seating. Pros: Food Quality, Parking, Livelyness Cons: , Wine Prices more

Great Easter Brunch.... 4/18/2004

Went to Benjy's for Easter Brunch and was extremely favorably impressed. The price-fixe menu was great, and the bottomless mimosas were a good idea (as were the bellini martinis!). The crowd was good-looking and well dressed which added to a great overall atmosphere. The only compaint would be the steel tables which were cold and unfriendly....a few table cloths would be a good thing. My wife and I are looking forward to going back for a regular menu meal, which also looked appetizing. Pros: food, service, presentation Cons: , overpowering A/C more

Best Restaurant in the Village 1/18/2004

This is where the most beautiful girls are in Houston, hands down. Food is great, the wait isn't bad if you go upstairs to the Lounge. Pros: Food, Atmosphere more

deliciouso 1/11/2004

Excellent presentation. Excellent food in a quiet environment. Outstanding service. French toast entrees are the best! Then slip upstairs to the trendy bar. Pros: Great food, Friendly people, Excellent menu more

Tasty food, not exactly what I expected 10/26/2003

I took a business client here for dinner on a Sunday night -- was expecting someplace a little more 'upscale' (this place seemed more 'hip' to me) -- maybe we should have been seated upstairs? Either way the food made up for it. The food was fantastic!! Atmosphere was lively but not overwhelming, modern decor, 'hip' clientele. Parking wasn't an issue (I assume b/c it was a Sunday night) -- a veritable feat for Rice Village! I'd return to Benjy's for a nice dinner out, although probably not for an expense account dinner. Pros: great food, hip/interesting decor, parking OK more

Exhorbitant Prices but well worth it. 9/15/2003

I ate here with a friend during the 'in-between' hours of 4:00-5:00 on a Saturday so it wasn't crowded. I did not have a reservation, and it doesn't seem like you need one. The food was amazing, it made the exhorbitant price tag easy to swallow. Staff members were running around cleaning tables that have just been cleaned, they were lining up napkins and table items like any mis-allignment would have caused catastrophy. I almost felt intimidated by how clean they were keeping everything, like if I would have walked over to another table and turned a fork the 'wrong way' or moved a salt shaker a quarter inch to the left, im almost positive that someone would have been there double quick to fix it. It was quite an experience, and definitely worth checking out. Pros: Amazing Dishes, Great Service, Awesome Atmosphere Cons: Exorbitant Prices more

Agreat restaurant, with great food, great wine selection, friendly staff and the place to be seen. I keep going back and its seems to get better if that is possible Pros: Fun Staff, Good Parking, Great Location more

good trendy 8/19/2003

this place is definitely worth a try. it has a trendy, contemporary look to it. the food is pretty good with generous portions. the staff is very friendly and helpful. the lounge upstairs is a pretty cool place to hang out for drinks if you're not hungry. Pros: good food, friendly staff, trendy more

Great Overall! 5/19/2003

Great service, Great bar upstairs (with a cute little outside deck), Great steaks, salads & desserts. Great place to take a date. Great place for large parties. Great for corporate functions as well. (I've heard their Sunday brunch is Great, too!) Pros: awesome menu, perfect bar, wonderful service Cons: parking more

A great dinner 3/18/2003

This may not be the place to meet people, but is definitely a wonderful place for dinner. I would recommend making reservations or eating early. The service I received was outstanding, and the food was even better. The recommendations made by our server were perfect, and the restaurant was not too noisy to have a nice conversation. Overall, Benjy's has great food, good service, and all at a price that is not too high. I would recommend this to all of my friends and family in Houston. I plan on coming back soon. Pros: Great food, Good Price, Atmosphere more
