Hey Stupid, it's the pizza! 4/11/2006

Ok, already all you tender souls. The ladies with the trays aren't the prom queens or your favorite Aunt Bea. So what! It is the Pizza afterall that you came for. I lived in Chicago too and yes, Uno's is very good but Zelda's has nothing to be ashamed about here. The crust is unique---definitely an artery clogger but Oh, what a way to go! The cornmeal and shorting combine in that very hot oven in a magical way. The Sauce is basic but very non acidic with light handed seasoning. We tried the veggie and the sausage and loved them both. Zelda's is like hiking in the mountains, you have to endure the pain (wait and marginal service at times) to reap the rewards (GREAT PIZZA). Worth the effort...close to the perfect pizza for me and I have looked from coast to coast for over 50 years. Pros: Pizza, Pizza, funky surrounds Cons: wait , no Aunt Bea more

Darn Good Pizza and a lot of ""culture"" 3/5/2006

Service sucked and the beer was luke warm, but I brought my German exchange student for a pizza and we both loved it. We had to wait about 20 min for a table, then longer for the food, but the pizza was great. I am from the deep south of California and often eat in Mexico...the experience is the food, not the service. Pros: pizza Cons: service, warm beer, hard seats more

Dont Stay there!! 3/4/2006

I went there the other night to enjoy ""great pizza"" from what I was told; and that was not wrong. I was truly amazed at how horrible the service was. The young women that greeted my group was very rude and acted as if she didnt want us there. Then once we did sit down the server was just as bad. She did not greet us with a hi or anything just what can i get you. This is the wors serice I have every had. I will not lie the pizza was great. Yet, I wish we would have just tooken the pizza to-go. Pros: pizza Cons: service, service, service more

Unfortunately Only Very Good to Great 2/15/2006

As a native Chicagoan I've been eating eating Gino's and Uno's/Due's deep dish pizzas since the early 60's. I've also tasted a lot of disappointing ""wannabes"" over the years. When I heard Zelda's was as good as the Chicago benchmarks above I took it with a grain of oregano. Well, after 8 visits in as many weeks here I would say Zelda (who was working at Uno's when I started going there) got it right. On their best days (6 of 8 so far, they're as good as the best. On their off days they just make darn good pizza. What's missing is consistency. In the hundreds of times I've had Gino's and Uno's/Due's pizzas they have only ranged from incredible to fantastic. Come on Zelda. more

Yuck! 1/30/2006

Go to Domino's..I won't eat it but ut's better pizza Better pizza.. more

It's Ok - but it ain't Chicago pizza 1/26/2006

I'm from Chicago. While I've found some GREAT New York-style pizza joints in NorCal- I've yet to find a place here that knows how to make a decent deep dish pie. We went on a Tuesday night. I was stoked. It LOOKED just like the pizza joints in Chicago. Dark. Old. Slightly tacky. The kind of place you take your friends for a casual beer. Being made to order before you are seated is annoying. Being made to wait 30 minutes for a table in a half-full house is even more so. Cash-only is absurd. The pizza: It's good, for what it is - but it ain't Chicago pizza. Toppings are fine - if limited. Sauce is unexceptional. The crust is oily and somewhat mealy - instead of buttery and flaky. It's not a bad meal - but but don't look to kill your Chicago crave here. more

Brocc-o-licious! 1/19/2006

Not sure why others are complaining about the service, we have been 3 times and have always been treated well. The broccoli pizza is so good, and the place is kinda funky- small and dark, booths with church-pew seats ... but it is cool in a charming urban way, like the Mission distric in SF. Great pizza experience! Pros: pizza Cons: parking more

Their service is TERRIBLE!!!! 12/11/2005

While Zelda's does have good deep dish pizza, that is not enough to keep me, my family or friends as customers. To make a long story short, despite the fact we had ordered our pizza in advance, sent a member from our group down to secure our table reservation, and were very nice even though they gave away our table and couldn't manage to tell us how long the next table would take, the hostess/waitress was extremely rude and gave us such uneccessary attitude for no apparent reason, that we left--& FOR GOOD! We will never set foot in Zelda's again, nor will we ever order take out. Horrible customer service!!! more

Enough Whining Already 10/14/2005

I've been eating pizza at Zelda's since I was a kid. I've taken people who love it, and people who hate it. Typically people who like Round Table or Domino's HATE Zelda's. Those others aren't even pizza. If you're going for the service or ambiance, this isn't the place, but the lights remind me of being a child, and NO, I don't necessarily recommend taking small children, the wait it too long. BUT, if you want something different AND live outside the confines of the same old pizza box--Zelda's is the place to check out. If you want better service, leave a better tip and give it more than ONE try. Love ya Zellie (Mike's Girls) Pros: Good Pizza, Better with Anchovies, Great drinks Cons: Long Wait, Service can be slow, Salad needs a boost more

Ew Ew Ew 7/4/2005

Doesn't take credit cards, soggy oily pizza. Avoid at all costs. Starvation is better. more

I love this pizza. 4/25/2005

i barely ever get to eat here but i love it when i do. im a really picky eater and i order dominos once a week. but believe me if you want a really good really unique pizza this is the place for you. yeah its a long wait but who cares most restaurants in san francisco have a long wait too (where i live). as i read in an earlier review they said the waitresses have a bad attitude because their tip is added in..not true...everyone in my family has an attitude most of the time. zelda and some of the others are from ILL. its their own twist to an original chigaco pizza cause thats where their from. i had a friend visit from the east coast and he loved the pizza. either way, family or not, id still love this pizza. more

Only the BEST EVER pizza! 4/20/2005

I absolutely adore Zeldas! But you have to know what youre getting into before you go, thats all. I dont care about the attitude from the waitresses or the wait its all a part of the experience! And the pizza oh man the pizza it makes it all worth while. The only pizza Ive ever had there is the combination with extra cheese (get a large because the leftovers are AWESOME!!!) Crust is to die for. I treat going to Zeldas like an event and if you do it that way, you cant go wrong. (I highly recommend calling ahead at least 30 minutes and placing your order, itll save on your cook time.) Pros: Ambiance, the PIZZA more

Unique, genuine, authentic 3/4/2005

If you want to experience a real city-style, brash, brazen and bold pizza pie - this is it! Love the straight-up, in-your-face, be-real service and the get-the-job-done, appetite- satisfying, most substantial pizza pie around! Faint-hearted, spoon-fed, mall-rat, cookie- cutter, chain (restaurant) gang whiners beware - this is not for you! Stay in the convenience of your limited little worlds and leave more room for us who appreciate diversity and uniqueness. You'll just be trampled by the crowd of loyal Zelda-ites. Worth the wait, and a welcome chance to share with friends. Go big and go often!!!! Pros: ambience, style more

A Classic! 2/28/2005

Zelda's is not Round Table. It is not Dominos. It is not Pizza Hut. What it is is a great alternative style pizza in a classic dive joint atmosphere. All these reviews that the pizza sucks or is not real Chicago-style.... I just don't understand. Honestly, the Spinocholli is one of my favorite meals of all time. I get excited just thinking about heading to Zelda's on a Friday evening after work, ordering an ice cold Sierra at the bar, savoring a couple of pieces of spinocholli, and then the leftovers the next day. Other notes... The Spinocholli is awesome. The Pesto is pretty good as well. The Sierra Nevada is ICE COLD! The service isn't great, but that's part of the character. Call ahead with your order, then put your name in right when you arrive. Pros: Pizza, Atmosphere, Price Cons: Service, Crowded more

If you like tasteless sauce on bisquick 2/1/2005

Then you should love Zelda's pizza. It is a complete mystery to me why so many Sacramento folks think this pizza is good. The dough tastes and feels like it was baked, then soaked in water. The sauce and cheese are generally tasteless. more

Why is Zelda's so great 9/20/2004

This must be the most overrated pizza joint in the state. The service is snarly, the place is a dump, and the pizza is only slighlty better than mom used to make...and she was Irish! Pros: location Cons: , ambiance, it's overrated more

pretty good 9/16/2004

I am still looking for that perfect pizza. This one is pretty close. the sauce was awesome. Very tasteful. the crust, though, tasted like a cookie. Flaky & crunchy. Pros: tasty sauce Cons: , dark atmosphere more

Simplicity 7/16/2004

I don't care how many pizza's some people have tried but all pizza's are not suppose to be the same. How boring is that. Zelda's make a great tasty pizza with a dim lit atmosphere. It worth trying at least once if not weekly. Pros: Pizza more

Over Rated 6/20/2004

I went to Zelda's Pizza last night with my 13 yr old son and My wife. We went on a recommendation that it was the best stuff in town. I normally visit Roma's Pizza on Franklin Blvd. but I wanted to see if Zelda could compete for what I believe to be the best Pizza. To be honest, these two pizza's are not comparable because one is Chicago Style and One is New York Style. However, I still give Roma's a 10 and Zeldas a 7 based on Cheesiness, Sauce Flavor and overall tastiness. Roma's is Still the champ. My son and Wife also agree. Pros: Price, Big Chunks of Sausage, different if you want Cons: , Not Cheesy enough, Sauce lacks depth more

Not kid friendly 6/2/2004

I love their pizza, always have. My husband and I went there quite a bit before we had kids. Last time we were their we took our 1 year old daughter but they dont have highchairs?! Needless to say we haven't been back in a year and a half and probably wont ever return. Pros: good food Cons: , long waits, bad service more
