Best

This YMCA has everything you want in a gym, and wide cross section of people. Not too many "hulks", but I don't mind them, either. I trust I can go here after work, get in a nice ...

Don't allow the Ymca to draught your account. I had to get the bank to call them finally and I still didn't get all the money back that was illegally taken from my account. Avoid...

Family Facility 10/24/2010

I have been a member of this facility for almost a year and I initially joined because of my horrific experience in another gyms childcare and It seemed like this would be a better place for him. I have to say I'm quite impressed with the customer service, cleanliness, and up to date equipment. The staff to child ratios are appropriate. I do wish they had a few more pieces of cardio equipment i.e. the step mill and the wave. Over all the gym is an excellent choice for my family and I. \r more

Updated review -- Very nice facility 2/9/2009

Was a little worried after reading the posted comments, but after visiting this YMCA I thought I would write an up-to-date review. This is a lovely facility -- newly redone. We were only stopping in for showers, but were highly impressed. Plenty of parking. Super friendly staff and members. Clean locker rooms and shower area. Mens/Womens locker rooms, Boys/Girls locker rooms, Family showers and locker rooms. Towels were provided, but are not offered at our local Y so we had brought our own too. We were so impressed with the showers we walked around some more -- pool area was nice (though smaller than ours at home), children's basketball was going on and looked well attended. Work out areas were nice and well-kept. Yes, there is a small chapel area in the main lobby. It seemed non-denominational and non-descript -- much like you'd see in any hospital. We did not investigate it, and no one gave us the evil-eye for passing it by. As I said, we were only passing through town but I would have no problems visiting this YMCA again. more

worst customer service 5/6/2007

Don't allow the Ymca to draught your account. I had to get the bank to call them finally and I still didn't get all the money back that was illegally taken from my account. Avoid bank draughts because the ymca has the worst customer service of any gym in the area. I was a member for two hours and I think I should get my money back. The office does not return phone calls. more

YMCA is a Great Organization 4/4/2007

Maddonna61, Get a grip. The YMCA has been around for a lot longer then eather of us. They are a great organization that does a lot of good for many people. I myself learned to swim through the Y. as have many others. As far as any Religous implications you mentioned, Freedom of Religion is one of the Foundations of Our Great Nation, so I suggest to you, with all due respect, If you don't like what the YMCA stands for, then go join Balleys Fitness, Golds Gym or any other fine establishment and go on with your life and quit demoralizing the beleifs of others, Especially if no one is hurting you. Live and Let Live. Have a great day and GOD BLESS !!!! more

not inclusive to everyone, cramped exercise rooms, dirty invironment 9/13/2006

Our YWCA on Oberlin road has closed and many of us have considered joining the Central YMCA om Hillsborough street. On my first visit I noticed Christian messages in red and blue vinyl stick on letters all around the Gym. I thought I'll just look at this as a matter of bad taste and not that I'm being proselytized while doing step. I decided to join, opened my new welcome folder and read that the YMCA mission is to promote the teachings of Jesus. I know this is the history of the Y but we are not all young, not all men and not all Christians. I was surprised because this was not the case at the YWCA. There is a YW on Hargett Street, But they are not getting a shiny new building. Wouldn't the mission of promoting the health and well being of the community be more inclusive to all our citizens. Is this some faith-based political mission to sell and tear down the YWCA and put all the money in promoting religion. Let's hope they don't put stick on letters on the windows and walls of their new building. more

upbeat, wholesome place to work out 1/16/2006

I go to the Y to work out - not meet people or socialize. Most of my friends have moved onto newer, trendier spots (Cap Fitness, Gold's at N. Hills, etc.), but I've never been happier to stay put. After renovations are done, the new Cen. YMCA will be close to perfect. It's all that I need (and I don't have to worry about being hassled or getting stuck in an hour long conversation when all I want to do is go in, work out in peace, and get on with my day). It's an upbeat, positive, wholesome place to work out sans the cheesy meat market gym scene. Pros: no cheesy meat market, wholesome environ., updated equip. Cons: only open until 10pm, close on wkd.'s at 6p more

Terrible Gym 3/22/2005

The members are all very friendly, and the visible staff as well. However, the place is quite dirty. There is no sprinkler system and parking lot lights are usually out. At least once a month some part of the facility is closed due to equipment failure (the showers disintegrating, the hot tub breaking, etc.) The money-raising campaign was a failure for the first time in the history of the Y. The 'new' equipment is worse than the old, and there is serious lack of equipment. Basically, this is the most poorly mangaged gym I've ever watched fall to pieces. They've lost over half their members- including me. I wouldn't consider the men's area wholesome- it's one of the many reasons I left. Pros: Friendly staff Cons: Dirty, UNSAFE more
