Our YWCA on Oberlin road has closed and many of us have considered joining the Central YMCA om Hillsborough street. On my first visit I noticed Christian messages in red and blue vinyl stick on letters all around the Gym. I thought I'll just look at this as a matter of bad taste and not that I'm being proselytized while doing step. I decided to join, opened my new welcome folder and read that the YMCA mission is to promote the teachings of Jesus. I know this is the history of the Y but we are not all young, not all men and not all Christians. I was surprised because this was not the case at the YWCA. There is a YW on Hargett Street, But they are not getting a shiny new building. Wouldn't the mission of promoting the health and well being of the community be more inclusive to all our citizens. Is this some faith-based political mission to sell and tear down the YWCA and put all the money in promoting religion. Let's hope they don't put stick on letters on the windows and walls of their new building.
