Strong location for special events! 2/27/2009

When your looking for a special event space, I recommend Royale.. \r \r To view photos:\r theeventdivision(dot)net\r \r Located perfectly at the cross-section of Downtown Los Angeles, Silverlake/Echo Park, Koreatown, and the Mid-City, this new venue, embraces the true architecture of old Los Angeles and intentionally clashes it with the urban style of the NEW L.A. You will lounge in a luxe posh Wilshire setting and enjoy cocktails with friends, while at the same time being inspired by the city's best DJ's, indie acts, and a modern cultural mesh that proves the Divine is the world's first and best DJ and mixologist. \r \r Set below a historic Hotel, the vibe can best be described as eclectic. We not only embrace this, but as the pictures on our site will show, we have a blast celebrating it by constantly offering different looks and feel. \r \r CAPACITY: 250\r www(dot)theeventdivision(dot)net\r (310) 424 5112 more

I just love the place! 3/6/2008

I have had the opportunity to hang out in the lounge several times and dine in their restaurant and found each visit very satisfying. The cocktails, food and atmosphere are great. I like the fact that there is a DJ spinning tunes for happy hour. Other places make you wait until 9pm to hear anything half way decent. The staff are always friendly yet professional and the free valet service in LA is undeniably hard to beat. I like that the crowd at the Royale are not a bunch of posers or wannabe's; this makes the place feel real and inviting. I don't know what's up with those who have decided to slam the place as they have, but I guess you just can't satisfy everyone. My friends have started going on their own and they love the place also.\r Keep up the good work Royale! Pros: Parking, cocktails prices, food, atmosphere, service, patio Cons: Seating in lounge more

Don't judge a book by its cover. 11/21/2007

I love this place. I have been here three times... I have brought several friends here from the westside who swear they would have never ventured out passed western blvd. From the outside my friends were like ""you are taking us to an apt. building!!!"" True it is on the first level of some cute real estate. However, they were amazed by the grandeur of the mix between old and new. The detail and architure of the place is beautiful. You can't get that anywhere but here. Also, the food and tre chic lounge is by far as competitive or surpass some of the westside venues as social hollywood, hyde, opera, republic, firefly, huntley, viceroy, skybar.... this place you get the star treatment without being ""someone"" or ""who do you know""... There are no lines, no list, no bottle service, and free valet service. The food is terrific, just as expensive as any great place, i have tried the sea bass, filet mignon both impeccable. This is my secret for now... but it won't be for long. Great place to either just have dinner or a place to have drinks. This area is close to La Cita, Elevate, The Edison, The Standard, J's Lounge, the Broadway bar. Pros: Great ambiance, great service, terrific food,No lines, Valet free, No list, No VIP line, great crowd Cons: Area is being developed. Crazy punk club across the street. Nothing else to do w/in walking distance. more

Utterly perfect. 10/9/2007

The setting is beautiful and comfortable, modern without being trendy. The high vaulted ceilings give an impression of space, but the layout of the table and lounge areas make it still feel intimate, not to mention very comfortable.\r \r The service was cheerful and completely on point, with impeccible timing that made the whole meal flow effortlessly. Overall, the service was the best I've received at a restaurant in some time.\r \r The chef, quite frankly, is a genious. The texture, temperature and flavor of the food was outstanding. It was delicious, savory and full of flavor yet delicate and light at the same time. The chef excels at creating entrees and desserts that are crispy and textural on the outside, while still moist and flavorful on the inside. The food literally melts in your mouth with an explosion of flavor.\r \r Highly recommend the spicy crispy pork spare-ribs (melt in your mouth with the right amount of spicy kick), and the chocolate sampler dessert. The Chilean Sea bass was perfectly cooked and the presentation was very nice. The taste was spectacular.\r \r Highly recommended for a romantic evening or to impress business partners. The prices were definitely reasonable for the quality of service, setting and food. We will definitely return again to try more of the delicious-looking menu selections. Pros: Lovely, comfortable setting with excellent service and delicious food. Cons: Not the best area, but free valet service helps. Have to walk through bar/lounge to get to restaurant. more

One of the finest restaurants in LA 8/31/2007

Royale is a hidden gem. I say hidden because everytime I have been there it is almost empty. The food is superb. Everything on the menu is amazing. The service excellent: prompt courteous seating, excellent waiters, very attentive. The decor is beautiful. The only negative is the location, pretty deep on Wilshire, but oh well. Definitely romantic. This is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. Try the scallops, or the fillet mignon. If you're feeling really American try the mac and cheese. For desserts try the chocolate tray: incredible. more

The royal treatment at the Royale 8/17/2007

This place is absolutely FABULOUS! I've been twice recently and both times, the team there did not disappoint. The ambiance is great with a mix of sultry cool in the bar/lounge, fresh and casual in the patio area and classic holloywood in the restaurant. The decor is truly amazing and inspiring which in fact directly compliments the menu. While the entree's are great, my favorite are the appetizers and desserts! The Big Eye Tuna and the chocolate chip cookies with a root beer float are out of this world. I found the staff to be pleasant and very accomodating even with a larger group. I've recommended this place to several friends and colleauges and all have come back with rave reviews. Having said all of that, the Royale is definitely a pleasant surprise in a transitioning area. The cherry on top is the ever so charming chef, Eric. Very personable and as delicious as his menu. Pros: Ambience, Food, Chef Cons: no complaints more

Royale Rocks 7/18/2007

After reading some of the negative reviews about Royale, I felt compelled to write this review. Talk about an ax to grind, all i can say is "" are you kidding me"". \r \r The impetus to write this was the review that stated the ""valet got them out quickly"". That's how I knew it was an angry ex-employee....The only thing that takes a long time is the valet.\r \r I too eat out frequently and have NEVER had a bad experience at ROYALE.\r \r I'm not proud of the fact but i am an extremely picky eater and the chef has ALWAYS taken care of any special requests i have.\r \r I also think what they have done as far as decor is beautiful.\r \r And to boot the chef got voted 1 of the 10 sexiest chef's in LA.\r \r Don't believe the haters. more

Great Experience today! 6/11/2007

I met a friend at the bar for Happy Hour and was very pleasantly surprised at the service and selection of appetizers offered at 1/2 price as well as $4 well drinks. The bartender recommended we order drinks made with Well vodka (Finlandia) because you get better quality for the money than the usual well swill. Daniel, the bartender, went out of his way to explain how great the Happy Hour is at Royale, and the menu did not disappoint. Big Eye Tuna with avocado, truffle mac and cheese, endive, tomato & frisee salad and an artisinal cheese platter with amazing bread and rolls were what we ordered, each $5-$6! Everything was delicious, especially for such a great deal. I recommend Royale's happy hour to anyone....and cannot wait to dine in their beautiful dining room in the near future. more

World Class Team???? 5/5/2007

This place reminds me of something a restaurant wannabe would open. After reading their claim that the restaurant put together a world class team we decided to try it. What a mistake. First, I am not sure where the chef has worked that makes him world class, but in my opinion his cooking is closer to the Daily Grill or Houston's not Guy Savoy. The Jidori Chicken was without flavor and the chicken was of poor quality. The lame was worse. We asked for an adjustment on one of items and were told that the chef does not alter his art pieces. Sheesh, A real ""World Class"" chef would do anything possible to accomodate a guest, but not this guy, this is not a world class experience. Service was nice but lacked any professionalism or passion. Who is training the waiters here? We could also here the chef yelling at servers and other employees from the dining room. This place better get some help quick. Pros: Nice Patio Cons: Everything else more

Lemonaid can not be made from this lemon. Our experience: TWO THUMBS DOWN. 5/3/2007

In short, I would not recommend this restaurant. I eat out frequently (11-15 times+ a week) and work as a management consultant (note: no relationship to restaurant or community/re: property values). When dining out on the weekend -- I look for top-notch decor, consistently good food and service, all of which Royale lacked: \r \r 1. Decor - I felt like I was eating inside a large bathroom, other decor is sparse. White tile spans from floor to ceiling, this includes tiled columns. The patio is pleasant. Women ? note: the bathroom door is translucent, the bathroom lighting is stronger than the main dining room, and the door (while off to the side) is visible from the main dining room. Note: this is not 4/5 star.\r \r 2. Food - Overall, I found the whole food experience to be very unpleasant. We had heard good things about the chef but were disappointed by the overall lack of professionalism & food preparation. I requested that they make a simple food substitution (some people have food allergies, etc, and a good restaurant will always accommodate these types of requests without hesitation) & agreed to the changes with the GM -- the chef prepared the wrong meal on purpose and then ruined the dish, twice. Further, the chef came out of the kitchen to observe my reaction. The other food we ordered was of marginal taste quality and came out lukewarm. In a ?something in exchange for something? [quid pro quo] business, I found this placed lacked overall professionalism and good business sense.\r \r 3. Service ? You should be aware that if you make a reservation, be very specific on where you would like to sit: there is a bar type area which has couches and low lying tables - so it is possible to ?make a reservation and get placed in the bar area? [read: eat dinner in your lap]. The bus staff was polite, however, the waiter was awful -- if it were not for the bus people, I would not have left the customary 15% tip. We got nothing from the clearly inexperienced server. Pros: if you live in the building and want a drink: difficult to screw up liquor. Cons: food, service, chef, management. unprofessional. more

Watch out for bad posts from ex-employees! I love this place! 4/1/2007

I have found it best to pay attention to those review where people 1) have more than one restaurant review, 2) don't seem to point out one person or another while salvaging others and 3) don't sound like ex-employees who use industry terms and have intimate knowledge of inner workings of mangement and ownership. I am a regular at the front lounge since I live in the building and think this place is a breath of fresh air and hope it stays! This place gets a lot of commendation on blogs and other sites. Careful with the nay sayers....\r \r I recommend the crispy spareribs, mac n cheese, and Jidori Chicken! their bartenders are hot too..\r \r FYI- The post below is from the former GM who just got fired for trying to beat up the chef and harrassing female employees!!! Pros: Food, Design, and hot lounge! more

Some False Reviews Below 3/29/2007

We read the inital reviews below and it looked great. We ate there and realized that the reviews were probably written by the staff or friends of the staff because our experience was flat-out pathetic. They appear to be trying to get the Standard crowd into their restaurant, but you'd be better off spending your time and money anywhere else. We had a reservation but the host had us wait at the bar. OK, but we ordered drinks and they came to seat us two minutes later, before drinks were served. Why did they bother seating us at the bar? While at the bar the staff was hanging around arguing trying to figure out the orders they just took, in their own drama oblivious to customers...I felt unsettled just sitting there. It took a 1/2 hour to get bread and we had to ask for it. I ordered a large San Pellegrino and got a small Voss with one glass...what about my wife, she was thirsty too? It seemed as though the waiter has never waited tables before, or even gone out for dinner. The service was unattentive and unprofessional. We made a simple request on the steak preparation when we ordered and the chef would not do it. The waiter didn't know what to do so he got the managers. The managers thought they could help but just made matters worse. The steak came out with a slab of cold herb butter slapped on top of it. Either stick to your guns and say no, or do it right. We would have ordered something else, no big deal. What drama they created...all we wanted to do was eat, drink and enjoy eachother's company. The chef doesn't appear to put his customers first...his ego and ""art"" is first. I ordered the short rib and I bit into a 1/2 clove of raw garlic in the sauce. Where did that come from? What is going on in the kitchen? The interior design that people speak of is interesting...do you like 4""x4"" white bathroom tiles? In my opinion, don't waste your time with Royale, especially if you will be driving from other parts of L.A. Pros: None. Too many other places to go to. Cons: Service, food, value. more

Great ambiance and food and wine! 3/2/2007

Admittedly, when I first heard of this restaurant I had reservations about the quality of the experience. Mostly due to its location. When we arrived we were shown the restaurant by a server or bartender who seemed very pleasant and professional. The courtyard was absolutely beautiful. We were greeted by a procession of employees. The room is the most beatiful room in Los Angeles! Hands down! Our server was charming with an Australian accent who I saw on TV recently. He reccommended the Big Eye Tuna which he contends was flown in from Japan daily. We started off with a nice sparkling rose then my date started asking tough wine questions to which he answered mostly, then defered to the resident sommelier. I appreciated the sommeliers take on food pairing...he based his suggestions around what we liked rather than imposing his ideals. He seemed to know his wine very well. I did have to ask the server twice for a refill of water. Although I can't recall a restaraunt where that didn't happen. The night finished with a chocolate tasting that was accommodate by a nice vintage port. I was impressed by the food, its presentation and the knowledge of the staff. We had a great time and I would highly reccomend this restaurant if your into great food and great wine. The 1920s lives on in this dining room. No LA pretentiousness. Music selection was interesting. Pros: Very impressive! Food is great, world class wine list. Cons: Hard to find, more

Nice interior BUT Extremely Poor Service AND VERY average food 2/21/2007

Went to this restaurant because of the great reviews on this site. Without a question - I was misled! Whilst the front staff were pleasant enough, the waiter barely interacted with us. He took our order and didn't show up again until we had completed our main dishes. The ribs starter was below average -- they highly recommend it but it tasted like McRib sauce from McDonalds on the ribs. Almost all high end restaurants serve a great Chilean Sea Bass dish which I mistakenly ordered at Royale. It was very bland and the fish was overcooked (which is hard to do with Chilean Sea Bass!). I have often paid $100/head at top restaurants in LA, NY and elsewhere. Royale falls into this price category but the complete meal is worth $15/head at best. I am high suspicious of the other Royale reviews on this website. Avoid at all costs.\r \r Pros: Great interior space and design, nice restrooms, beautiful flower decorations, a menu that LOOKS great\r \r Cons: Badly trained staff, thus poor management, VERY average food (which is fine if they charged $10 to $15/meal), Poor customer service, At the end of the day -- not worth the price. Pros: Nice interior & design, nice restrooms, beautiful flowers Cons: Average food NOT worth the price, POOR service, Poorly trained staff, Bad management more

The Worst Restaurant in Los Angeles. 2/18/2007

Usually what we remember about a restaurant is the food, but the only thing I'll ever remember about the Royale on Wilshire is that it has the worst staff I have ever seen. We had barely gotten our drink orders when we heard one of the managers yelling at one of the waiters like they were a child or something. I thought it was an anomaly until the chef came out of the kitchen and started yelling at someone else. The we realized that this place was just a nut house for those arrogant high cuisine types who think food is worth more than people. And the food wasn't even that great!\r \r Unless, you support workplace abuse, I'd take your dollars elsewhere.\r \r We didn't stay for dessert. Pros: The valet got us out of there quick. Cons: The staff. more

Best food and service , great billiards room, Mac & cheese to die for, service personnel pleasant & knowledgeable 2/16/2007

Our first experience at Royale was very enjoyable. Cozy and romantic atmosphere, Corina our waitress was pleaseant and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. The host greeted us and set the pace for our meal. The Maitre D', Adam was witty, and charming, Expedient conversationalist. The food was superb, my husband Jose' is a Mac&cheese expert. He loved it. The Jidori Chicken, Filet Mignon, and the Pear Tart was I will pass this site onto others ASAP. more

One of the worst I have been to 2/15/2007

This is one of the worst restaurants I have been to. I took my partner there for Valentines day after reading 5 reviews that said it was highly recommended. The staff was very unorganized, the food was poorly prepared. I've never had Ahi Tuna that had a texture closer to that of jello. The sauce on the bbq ribs tasted like it was from a bottle. I would definitely NOT recommend this place to anyone. more

really pretty bar 1/26/2007

the Bar is truly beautiful. We did not eat at the restaurant, but did order food from the bar menu. The crab cakes were pretty good. Drinks are interesting and delicious.. Pros: drinks, decor more

So so much fun 12/26/2006

My friend told me they opened this place really close to her building so we checked it out over the weekend. We usually go up to the Standard but they have such a large cover and long lines so we are going to come to this place now for sure! It wasn't really crowded but that was cool because there was no wait for the bar. I love the way they did it up inside. It kind of reminded me of the W Hotel but cooler for sure. This is going to be my new favorite hangout! Pros: atmosphere, no lines, no cover, good drinks, good music Cons: restaurant was a little pricey more
