Rapidly going downhill towards a crash 7/30/2011

This used to be a nice neighborhood place. The food used to be excellent, the best in the city, but the bar staff mixed depending on who waits on you. Sometime last year they changed chefs and changed the menu. Since then it seems that they can't get the simplest of orders right. Look, if I order a side of mashed potatoes then the waitress should know I ordered mashed, She should not bring me french fires then ask me ""How is everything?"" The bar is hit or miss. Before, the guys tending bar were terrific servers and the girls were too busy on their Blackberries. Now, the girls at the bar give the best service, while the guys are hunched over and distracted. Earlier this year I walked in for brunch and I ordered a western omelet, nothing difficult, everyone knows what a Western omelet is. I said to our waitress I wanted American cheese and tomatoes. I got my omelet, no cheese, no tomatoes. Another time I ordered a burger with mashed potatoes. I got a burger with fries. You would think my server knew what I wanted and would bring me the correct drink. I once tried to talk to Ray, the manager about the poor service. Talking to him is like talking to a wall, it's like he's in his own little world (I think he's uncomfortable around people). Beer is reasonable and the girls behind the bar are friendly and personable (but not the guys). West on Centre is in a terrific location but the experience is very uneven. I've seen no signs of it getting better. more

Overpriced Drinks 12/2/2009

Went into West on Centre for a quick dinner this evening. Atmosphere is really nice with the fire lighting to add extra cosyness.Have to say the food was only OK. Had the Goat Cheese Pizza which was slightly on the burnt side. Also had a glass of wine and was really shocked at the price. $8.50 for a glass of Chardonnay! And its a pretty cheap Chardonnay to buy a bottle of at the liquor store! I think this restaurant thinks they are in the heart of downtown!! I guess not too much competition in West Roxbury. more

CROOKS, CONSUMERS BEWARE!!! 9/23/2009

CROOKS: DO NOT BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF, in June of this year my father passed away, my family had the funeral reception at West on Centre, we had a contract with the restaurant for the day of the buffet reception. We ordered 2 salads at $40 each, 2 lasagnas at $60 each, 2 desserts at $24 each, and then coffee for $3 per person for a total of $332. Well the restaurant charged my credit card twice once for $523.75 and the other charge for $439.95. They then refunded my card for $429.95. When I got my bank statement, I called the restaurant to alert them that they had still over charged me. They then told me that they had given me an extra salad and that they were charging me for it. In addition, they had clamed that there was 39 people at the funeral reception when I had an exact head count of 28 people. They also put in an additional charge for a table cloth?? For an extra $5. I told the restaurant I did not ask for an extra salad nor did I want an extra salad and further more I NEVER saw them bring out an extra salad. The restaurant claims they provided the funeral party with 3 salads and so they are charging me an additional $40. Therefore, they took it upon them selves to bring out an extra salad and it was not part of our contract for the party. They took advantage of a grieving family that had just buried their loved one. I have contacted the restaurant 4 times and still have not received the $40 dollars for the salad that I did not want, that I did not order, nor that I did not see an extra salad brought out. I think they have awful business practice and over charge their customers without regard. I am posting this review to prevent this restaurant from taking advantage of more consumers. CONSUMERS BEWARE!!!! Cons: TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS more

Great decor but unprofessional management and slow bar staff 12/3/2008

I recently went into West on two separate occasions. The first time was on a Saturday to meet friends for drinks; it was busy, but not packed. The steep prices of the drinks should indicate a higher level of professionalism. Our waitress seemed a bit too comfortable with us and some of her comments left us feeling uncomfortable. It also took too long to get our drinks (over 10 minutes for beer and wine). We then went straight to the bar for our next round; the only one who paid us any attention was the taller gentleman. All in all, we left an hour later not terribly impressed. I decided to give it another go and try a less busy night, and went back on a weekday for dinner. Our waitress was Emily who was great! She put us right at ease, answered all our questions and we enjoyed having her as our server. Again, the drinks took some time to come out and our cocktails were not made right. The food was not great, but good enough to make me want to come back to try other items. However, towards the end of our meal, we witnessed a young woman (a manager, I am assuming) berating the staff. Granted, there were only a handful of customers left and thought it didn't last long, but it completely soured our nice dining experience. It made us uncomfortable and I felt embarrassed for the poor staff. \r I enjoyed the atmosphere and found the food to be tasty. But the unprofessional staff, slow bartenders and high cocktail prices will be keeping me from returning any time soon. Pros: Alternative to city, nice decor, comfortable atmosphere Cons: Pricey drinks, unprofessional staff more

Definitely head 'West' 5/12/2005

I live in Jamaica Plain and go to West on Centre pretty often, whether it's for a nice sit down meal with friends (my favorite are the mussels) or just to chat over a martini in the lounge (the chocolate martini glass actually has a chocolate rim - yum!). They also have an expansive wine list, and the banana bread pudding is divine. Upscale casual american-type food is served, and the dining room is always packed Friday & Saturday. But reservations are accepted - thankfully! - because I've waited for a table for almost an hour before. Pros: friendly service, lively interior, open kitchen Cons: crowded on weekends, a bit older crowd more

Warm & Comfortable Bistro 2/10/2005

We've eaten at West three times and learned one lesson: stay away from the veal. Their fish dishes are excellent & the massive pork chop heavenly, but each time we've visited the veal has arrived (sometimes even when it wasn't ordered!) tough and drenched in sauce. Overall a comfortable oasis for casual dining in the desert of WRox, but there's room for improvement. Pros: Comfy bar, Fish, Pork Chops Cons: Uneven menu, OK service more
