By Far The Best!! 1/3/2012

As a women, I was a little nervous to try kickboxing and boxing, but once I finally got the courage to go in for a free trail... i loved it! The instructors were really nice and worked with me the whole time. My best friend and I both signed up and now all I ever want to do after work is go train. Its one of the best work outs I have had!!! more

Think again before signing up 5/16/2011

You really need to think twice before signing up with this fine establishment. Yes, it's true what many of the reviewers state--the instructors (most) are really nice, the people that train there are friendly, and it's a nice environment . . . if you just wanted to hang out with people. However, if you're really interested in obtaining knowledge and furthering your growth in jiu-jitsu and muay thai, you should probably go somewhere else. The way it works is that they advertise that they are open almost all the time and you can come in at any time and someone will work with you. In truth, yes, they may actually have the doors OPEN, but that doesn't mean that anyone is actually going to WORK with you. Yes, there are instructors there, but they'd rather chit-chat and talk about various things instead of helping you work on anything. As for structure, there isn't any structure. Basically, you will walk in for your first class which is free. Okay, great, this will be somewhat similar to what you will expect if you join, right? No, not even close. The first class is basically some guy who will work with you one-on-one and bust your butt and you'll say to yourself, ""Wow, this place is awesome, I have to sign up. Obviously the instructors can't work with me one-on-one all the time, but chances are that they can devote 5-10 minutes to me over the course of an hour if I come more frequently or I can just come at times when there are no classes, like during the daytime. Okay, I'll sign up."" \r Well, then they try to show you what a great deal 3 months/6 months/12 months is. Umm, I just want one month. Thanks though . . . So, you sign up for 6 months/year on the premise that you can leave early if you like, no problem. (I guess they give a refund but one of the guys in my JJ class told me that you have a better chance of beating some guy named GSP than getting any money back.) Great, next class you show up early, and you go to the EXACT same instructor who did your intro class and say, hey, great intro class, can you give me some tips for today? His response is essentially going to be a ""Go F' yourself because I'm busy with x, y, z. You have to work on everything I taught you at the last class!"" Okay, no problem, maybe I can go join the UFC next week since I'm obviously so advanced. I'm sorry, but that really doesn't cut it for me. Why don't they just have you join a normal class when you show up for your free trial? Because then much fewer people would actually join. Sadly, this place has tremendous potential and the owner, Kru John, is a PHENOMENAL teacher. PHENOMENAL. Seriously, never seen a better instructor--it's a shame he doesn't teach more classes. The gym is the real deal (for people who already know a heck of a lot--seriously, you would not want to mess with their fighters) and he sadly probably has no idea of what is going on around him. Nevertheless, if you really want to learn and are really dedicated, go to a place where it's not just about the money and the desire to ""sign you up"" and there is a little, tiny bit of interest in you as a person developing your skills. On the other hand, if you already have a really good core of knowledge, then you probably would fit in here just fine. Anyway, I hope this review helped someone out there who like me, was looking for the right gym and unfortunately walked into the wrong one. more

Need improvement 5/5/2011

This place is very dirty and now well organized. As a woman from the neighboring area, who wishes to learn MMA from a professional, Wai Kru has quite a reputation in my area. But as I stepped into the building, I realized right away how horrible this place is. The place is full of trash and the odor of the place is lustered with men sweat. Also, the is place well known to be unorganized. When I tried to talk to the receptionist, they did not care about the customers' well being at all, not to mention their rude manners. I also arranged a private lessons once with one of the ""professionals"" there, but expecting the trainers to be early for their first meeting, I was well disappointed upon the realization that the trainer actually arrives 30 minutes late. And once the training actually starts, the trainer, I don't know how or why, ""accidentally"" punches me in the face. I know for fact that for them it is nothing, just a normal punch, but for me, a new 26 year old grad student from northeastern, it was powerful. A blue eye is the only thing i ever receive from the gym, and this is probably the last time i will ever mention it again. more

Best gym in boston 2/20/2011

I searched for almost 6 months before deciding to try wai kru. After trying 5 other martail arts gyms i was surprised at what i found at wai kru.... Unlike other schools training was unlimited and available even if you attend a class time. Wai kru offers both classes and an open training format. Any time its open 6-8am 12-10pm daily the are trainers available to help u and give guidance. AND it costs a lot less. I pay 115$ per month my last gym was almost 200$ and I could only work out a few times a week more

Great Jiu Jitsu Program 4/30/2010

just moved from DC and I'm a BJJ purple belt and amateur MMA fighter. I went to Wai Kru to train and roll with new people. I was really impressed with their Jiu Jitsu team. Their coach is Carlos Neto who is a black belt from the Brazil. Neto is a no-gi specialist but he has developed a nasty Gi game as well. I took both their Gi and No Gi classes (back to back) He has fantastic wrestling and his style is perfectly suited for MMA. I learned a lot. The class was great, tough warm up but really good stuff. The other students are of mixed experience with some blue-purple belts and some white belts--some strict BJJ guys and some MMA fighters. As I was leaving another Blackbelt and pro MMA fighter was coming in to work out as well, to have so many talented guys is fantastic. Pros: BTT Blackbelt, tons of great pictures on walls, friendly, $$ more

A Great Experience 4/30/2010

I am a beginner with no training experience, I have been a fan of the UFC for a while and appreciate the sport of mma. I did a Muay Thai trial lesson with Kru John Allan and a fighter who works there. Kru (teacher in Muay Thai) is a really interesting guy with tons of wisdom and great technique gained from years of training and studying muay thai, the session was difficult but the work out was the best I have ever had. I left with some grasp of a few basic skills and I was exhausted. The rates are really competitive with health clubs in Boston. For similar priced gyms you can get tons of flat screen TVs and treadmills but no instruction, help, or motivation. In one class at Wai Kru I was pushed physically by great instructors and shown new skills. Worth the visit and I was impressed enough to sign up. Pros: Facility, Safe, Clean, Instructors A++, Fun, Cons: no showers but I was told they are coming very soon more

The best instruction around. 12/9/2009

Great gym. Kru John is a great instructor. I also like the fact that the coaches are active fighters. I like knowing that I am learning from people who know what works. You can show up any time the gym is open and work your stand up (not just during class times). There are tons of classes! Pros: top level instructors, great hours, lots of classes, Cons: If you don't want to work hard, this is not your place. more

Trained Alot of Places And... 11/23/2009

I have trained at a lot of places around Boston and Wai Kru was for sure the best. They are open all day and I can just walk in anytime and there are instructors ready to work with you, not just at class times.\r I met a lot of new people there as well and its kinda like a big family. Pros: great hours, great instructors more

Wai Kru! 11/13/2009

I've been training at Wai Kru for two years now, and it has changed my life for the better. The instructors are smart, technical, enthusiastic, experienced fighters, and they're eager to share what they know. I recommend Wai Kru to anyone who is a good sport, knows how to work hard, and is ready for a challenge. Pros: brilliant, encouraging instruction Cons: be ready to do your best and train to the limit more

Dirty, meatheads, and Jocks 9/15/2009

People there were just meatheads and dumb jocks. Their a bunch of street fighters and bar brawlers that have seen too many bad martial arts flicks. Instructors are knowledgeable but only want to turn you into a cage fighter to represent their school. No real respect. Way to many anger management issues. Not a lot of class. Pros: Good location, lots of class times, lots of instructors Cons: Dirty, Crowded, people unfriendly, no parking more
