Great Restaurant for a Special Dinner 8/14/2010

Went to the Veranda on Highland while I was in Birmingham on business. I'm from NYC, so I'm used to great restaurants and wasn't expecting to find much in the way of fine dining in Birmingham, Alabama of all places. Boy, was I in for a surprise. The atmosphere and food reminded me of some of my favorite restaurants here in New York - the Union Square Cafe, the Gotham Grill, and Gramercy Tavern. There was a slight touch of old New Orleans about the restaurant, but in the final analysis, like all great restaurants, it was true to its own original vision. I strongly recommend this restaurant to those who want to see why Birmingham has become a dining destination. Because of its romantic setting in an old, beautifully restored home, it would also be a great spot for a wedding reception, an anniversary dinner, or other special occasion. more

One of the best fine dining experiences in Birmingham 11/18/2008

Veranda is one of the best restaurants in Birmingham...but it's not the first that comes to mind when you ask most of your friends. Why? It's a well hidden secret. I've tried the cheesecake and peanut butter pie...and it was better than my grandmother's. The cheesecake was perfect...not too heavy. The quail with sunny side quail egg was tender and flavorful. The scallops were mentioned in another review and I can concur...they are seared to perfection. The staff is professional...the atmosphere is romantic...and the chef's private room is an experience worth trying. (You and other couples go to a private area and the chef prepares a 7 course meal...his choice...for you and your friends.) I recently discovered they serve brunch on Sundays and a jazz band plays music for Veranda guests. I can't wait! Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

best peanut butter pie ever! 6/30/2008

My husband and I recently celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary at the Veranda. The food was fabulous, one of the best meals I have enjoyed in Birmingham. The perfectly seared scallops were accompanied by crisp, tangy avocado slaw and the halibut was wonderfully moist and flakey. The absolutely decadent peanut butter/chocolate ganache pie we shared for dessert was an show stealer. We could not have chosen a better restaurant for our celebration. more

Best New Restaurant in the City...hands down. 9/19/2007

Ever since Chef Robey took over the kitchen at the newly re-opened Veranda, something really special has been happening on Highland Avenue that has nothing to do with Bottega. This is the best place in Birmingham to sample authenic cajun/creole dishes with a unique southern flair. I have yet to be disappointed...heck, I've never failed to be blown away by the food this place puts out. I've tried BBQ shrimp at least 100 times, and the Veranda's doesn't have a close competitor for the #1 spot on my all-time list. The service is good, the atmosphere great and the food is out of this world. Do yourself a favor and get here fast before a waiting list becomes the norm. Pros: Some of the best food in a city known for great food. Cons: Service can be slow at times, though it's well worth the wait. more
