Vegetarian options... 11/18/2006

I love Mexican food but am rather hesitant to order dishes in restaurants because of the lard or chicken stock style of preperation, but not here! I asked for the details for their vegetarian menu and was pleasantly surprised. I had a spinach enchilada dish that was amazing! Cool music too! Pros: vegetarian & vegan menu, music more

They have dancing puppets people... 11/11/2006

I have been a regular here for about a year now and have never been let down! The food is delicious and rather inexpensive for such large portions, the music is festive to say the least ( from classic salsa to Smiths in spanish), the staff all know me by name and always make me feel at home, but what is truly unbelievable is the decor... think day of the dead meets Hollywood kitsch. The only bummer is the good ol' Cahuenga parking hassle... Pros: Dancing Puppets, Big Daddy Carlos Cons: Hangovers more

Fantastic! 11/3/2006

I dont remember Lloyds Camera looking like this! This place is visually UNBELIEVABLE! I came here for the first time on Halloween and spent almost my whole night checking out every little detail. AMAZING! Pros: AMBIENCE, ART... more

Lazy Monday... 11/3/2006

After a horrible afternoon at work I decided to leave early and grab a well deserved cocktail. I calld up some of my less motivated friends and they told me to meet them at the Velvet Margarita for happy hour. Velvet Margarita is open for happy hour... who knew? By the time I got there, the place was in full swing! My buddy's and I stayed for hours... margaritas, chips and dip, crazy music, more margaritas... the place made me forget all about my crappy job if just for a minute! Thanks Velvet people! Pros: Happy Hour Drink Specials more

The Finest Mexican Restaurant in Los Angeles! 10/11/2006

I have never had so much fun at a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles. The Velvet Margarita Cantina is THE place!!!!! You gotta try the chicken mole. The music is great too. I never knew there was a Spanish version of Neil Diamond's "Cracklin' Rose." Also, this place is a tequila lover's dream. I got quite an education from the bartender about what makes a great tequila. I cannot imagine that there is a better selection of tequila anywhere north of the border. You will also have fun trying to identify all of the velvet portraits. Of course there is the most obvious Elvis, but my faves are Herve Villechaize and Sid Vicious! more

MUY excelente!!! 10/8/2006

Took a Chef friend for dinner this weekend - I got the vegetarian tamales which were SO good - cheesy but not greasy and the beans were really well seasoned - friend got the salmon and loved it!! said it was perfectly cooked, and also commented on the portion size- and only $15! It was nice to be able to take a foodie somewhere for real mexican food, and impress them without paying $$$. the salsa /queso trio was really good too - REAL queso - not crappy melted cheese like in most H/wood restaurants. heard the people next to us say the margaritas were great, but we drank wine, which was actually good too. Staff were attentive and didn't rush us out when we were done.. a really good night! Pros: food more

El Stinko! 10/6/2006

This is one of those places that will gladly take your money on a slow weeknight but try to get in on a late weekend night and you won't make it past the door...unless you have ""reservations"". In other words, if you're not with some bimbo on your arm or have the right look..you ain't getting in. And if you do get in, be careful of the bartenders scooping up any money that you leave on top of the bar. That happened once before on a weeknight when I was ""lucky"" enough to be granted entry. I'm finished with this trendoid dump. Maybe I should try someplace else on Cahuenga that's not so magnificent. Somewhere a regular guy can hang out...hmmm...maybe Citizen Smith. Then again, maybe not... Pros: alcohol, running water, electricity Cons: posers, lousy bartenders, bad attitude more

Editorial
  • In Short
You'd never guess from the grungy garage facade that this is one hot tamale of a place. Inside, the trendy Mexican lounge and restaurant is carnival fun house-meets-Tijuana kitsch: Blue velvet walls, black-lit Elvis portraits, sombreros on the ceiling and a palette consisting almost entirely of deep shades of red set the scene. Roving mariachis serenade hipsters and revelers sipping pineapple and coconut margaritas, while energetic salsa music booms during their breaks. A full menu is comprised of many calorie-conscious twists on traditional cantina favorites like ahi ceviche, turkey empanadas and tequila-flavored shrimp bisque.

Hits: The crowd is fun and the chips and salsa trio (chipotle, tomatillo and hot bean dip) are some of the best items on the menu. Note: they're free with dinner.

Misses: Unless you have a reservation for a large group, you'll have to wait for a table, which can be painfully slow on weekend nights. Also, the margaritas are very pricey.
