We were told this place had great margaritas and crowd. We weren't disappointed! k

Worst

ugh

This place makes me angry. I looove a good margarita and some Mexican food, but this restaurant has neither. The service was incredibly slow, and instead of apologizing, the wai...

No food at bar 9/25/2006

I went to this bar/restaurant, sat at the bar and ordered a margarita. When the bartender brought it I then asked for chips and guac. like I have several times before. He informed me that they have changed their policy and no longer allow food at the bar. I might under stand if the place was packed but there were about five people at the bar. What a ridiculous policy. I have never heard of such a thing. When I explained that I didn't want to drink on an empty stomach the bartender suggested that I just drink a lot of coffee. It's good to see that this bar is so concerned about drunk driving. So I left the bar without drinking my margarita. I guess I'm more concerned than the owners of this establishment are about driving drunk. Definitely won't return here. There are way to many great places in this town who actually cater to the customer. Cons: Won't serve food at the bar more

Having a late night with a big group? 9/17/2006

then ditch Jerry's Deli and jet across town to this spot. I celebrated my 30th birthday here with several girlfriends and had a ball. Drinks are great. Bartenders are friendly and flirty...Ooh! Happy Birthday to me! more

I couldn't say it better myself... 9/9/2006

I am a Mexican-American thirty-something male born and raised in the city of Los Angeles and rarely do I experience a refreshing spin on my beloved culture's timeless traditions. This place seems to capture every facet of Mexican-American authenticity in it's cuisine, imagery, and entertainment with sincerity, respect, and even a slight sense of humor. It's somewhat out of my character to write or read a review but I could not help myself after reading a few ignorant remarks regarding the reluctance to pay $15 for ""Mexican food""??? Try Taco Bell on Vine! (FYI) The dim-lit ambience is also another accurate characteristic of Cantinas of new and old in Mexico and throughout the southwest! Viva La Velvet Margarita!!! C/S Cons: Cahuenga parking more

Wonderful little Mexican Bar and Food 8/15/2006

This has got great atmosphere. The drinks are strong but a bit on the pricey side. The food is exquisite. Day of the dead of the decor and velvet everywhere! Wonderful staff! All and all I highly recommend it! Open late too! Pros: Ambience more

Like Tia's Backyard 7/2/2006

This place reminded me of Tia's backyard in the Gh*tto and that's a compliment. Hip Mexican vibe makes being hispanic cool in Hollywood. With plenty of bars to hop to and clubs to dance at, the VM is a great place to start or end the evening. Food was good, drinks good, but the atmosphere is a MUST. Pop songs in Spanish play in the background while an occassional Happy Birthday song in the mix. The Patio is great with its own bar and pleanty of leg room. Pros: Location, Atmosphere, People Cons: Expensive Bar, Long Waits Late more

Best Atmosphere in Mexican Food 6/29/2006

Another must-visit spot in Hollywood. I made a reservation the day of with no problems. I had to push it back 30minutes, again no problem. This place is DECKED-OUT. The food is truly good, and the staff is super friendly. Sure the food is inexpensive, but they more than make up for it on the drinks. The margaritas are tasty, but go for a middle of the road one, the $30 one just is not worth it. I cannot express enough how absolutely COOL this place is. DO make a reservation! Pros: Great food, f-ntastic ambiance Cons: Watch that bar tab more

Great Mojitos, Inexpensive Food 6/22/2006

Very cute atmosphere. Goth meets mexican meets luxe. Call a few days in advance for reservations...we couldn't get seated until almost 11pm for dinner. The waitstaff is attentive and fun. The $10 mojitos are worth every penny. Dinner is a flat price--$15!!!--and portions are large, so don't be afraid to share. The food isn't the best you've ever had, but after a few mojits...you don't notice any difference! Get the shrimp bisque, its phenomenal! Within walking distance of a lot of other great bars after you eat. more

Outstanding! 5/10/2006

This place is amazing. I keep coming back to share with my friends and everybody I bring is just floored. The food is terrific. Classic with new twists. The portions are huge too. This is the type of place where you can just come in for a drink and a good meal and just end up staying all night because the people are so cool and the vibe good. The owner came up to the table and checked out everything and I thought that was cool because it shows that people really care about me as a customer and not just taking my money. Ask for the bartender Thomas to take care of you. I'll keep coming back to this place and I highly recommend it. I would suggest reservations because the place is popular. I would also recommend to use the valet. Safe and cheap. Pros: Food, Drinks, Vibe more

Best Cinco De Mayo location in L.A. 5/9/2006

Cinco De Mayo 2006. PROS Place was packed, but staff were still extremely visable, friendly and helpful. Free margaritas, hot sauza tequila girls, and comp food trays all night- food was good- I've eaten dinner there before which was really good, who knew bar snacks could be yummy too. Crowd was deep in celebs. Owners were around all night, saying hi and helping out, and they had Mariachis as well as a DJ...I am not sure if it was the tequila, but the DJ seemed to be playing all my favorite songs... They phased people out long after they stopped serving drinks, it was nice not to be kicked out at 1:30am like everywhere else in Hollywood. Door guy was stopping cabs for people leaving. Lots of avail valet parking. Really hot people. CONS none Pros: hospitality &food, hot people & drinks, good music Cons: not for the shy more

Editorial
  • In Short
You'd never guess from the grungy garage facade that this is one hot tamale of a place. Inside, the trendy Mexican lounge and restaurant is carnival fun house-meets-Tijuana kitsch: Blue velvet walls, black-lit Elvis portraits, sombreros on the ceiling and a palette consisting almost entirely of deep shades of red set the scene. Roving mariachis serenade hipsters and revelers sipping pineapple and coconut margaritas, while energetic salsa music booms during their breaks. A full menu is comprised of many calorie-conscious twists on traditional cantina favorites like ahi ceviche, turkey empanadas and tequila-flavored shrimp bisque.

Hits: The crowd is fun and the chips and salsa trio (chipotle, tomatillo and hot bean dip) are some of the best items on the menu. Note: they're free with dinner.

Misses: Unless you have a reservation for a large group, you'll have to wait for a table, which can be painfully slow on weekend nights. Also, the margaritas are very pricey.
