This place makes me angry. I looove a good margarita and some Mexican food, but this restaurant has neither. The service was incredibly slow, and instead of apologizing, the wai...

What’s The Deal With No Corona? 5/9/2010

Sorry I’m a white guy who ordered a Corona – I guess it’s part of their protocol to make you feel like a jackass if you order a Corona. The snooty bartender with the British accent took the opportunity to verbally chastise me regarding the evils of Corona being an Anheuser-Busch product that does not support the Mexican economy. He adamantly stated that the Velvet Margarita only carries true Mexican beers – and with that, he bought me a Sol (Mexican beer) and introduced it as “Corona-esque”, but with a superior taste. And – I’ll be damned – he was right! Now I’m a Sol drinker! VIVA MEXICO!!! Pros: Sol Beer, Great Patio more

Attitude, Bad Service, Pricie, DBL Charge 5/2/2010

If all you care about is atmosphere then this is the place for you. Very elaborate mexican decorations with a trendy atmostphere, I'll give them that. HOWEVER, I did experience nasty attitude from the bartender while ordering drinks and in the same night was double charged for another set of drinks by a different bartender. There are clearly people with heads stuck up their @ss that work there. And on top: who likes paying $10 for mediocre margaritas. Most of the genuine reviews I've read regarding the food were about sanitation issues, meaning aside from that nasty hangover the next morning, do you really want to add food poisoning to that list? more

How fast can I go back?! 4/13/2010

I love this place, I went with a bunch of friends & the bartenders were heavy on the pour, the crowd was fun & friendly, kind of a rocker vibe. We went to the back patio & there was another bar & dancing, a seperate DJ from the music inside. We valeted the car, it was great. i will be back...this is also a celebrity hotspot (shhh) Pros: Strong Drinks, great crowd more

Great for groups 2/19/2010

Went here for an after-party. It's pretty hidden, but you must go here. The atmosphere is amazing. Love the decor. It's funky, crazy and charming really. Go with a group, have drinks & it'll be a good night. Just regular Mexican food, nothing too special, the prices are just right! Pros: fun atmosphere, good drinks, good for groups Cons: location, really small more

great set priced meals 1/15/2010

On Cahuenga, this is my go-to spot whenever I wanted something reasonably priced. With a set price, it's never an issue with dining partners (unless of course they drink like fish and don't eat real food). I love the complimentary 3 dips and chips. There are two bars. The main bar is gorgeous. The outside patio is for the smokers. In general the decor is beautiful and if you're into the Day of the Dead, you need to check it out. Pros: decor, drinks, consistently good food Cons: can get really loud after dining hours more

Velvet Margarita Rocks! 1/7/2010

I finally decided to try this place after seeing all these great reviews. Came with a few girlfriends and we all had a blast. The free chips & salsa were amazing, they have so many different types of margaitas to try (all were very good) and the food was so tasty. After our meal we decided to hang out by the bar and had ourselves a great night. I'll be coming back to Velvet Margarita! Pros: People watching, Fun Vibe, Good Food & Drinks! more

I’ve never seen anything like this before 1/4/2010

This place is truly unique, even for Hollywood. I’ve never seen anything like it before. The Velvet Elvis paintings & the Elvis movies in Spanish were a nice touch! I’m majoring in Latin Studies & appreciate the authenticity. We had to wait 45 min. for our table, but it was Friday night, and it was well worth it -- free chips & salsa as soon as we sat down. $5 Margarita was a great deal, and my friend had the one in the pineapple, which was $30 – ouch! Food was great, too – make sure to try the Chile Relleno! Next time I’m going to stay longer & hang out at the outdoor bar after dinner – the bartenders have a little attitude, but they’re hot!!! Pros: Free apps, hot bartenders, cool atmosphere more

Great place for a birthday 12/25/2009

My friends took me to the Velvet Margarita for my 21st birthday last weekend. What a great place for a party! The staff was very accommodating, from the Host, who made sure our large group was well taken care of, to our Server, who was attentive to a fault, and the Bartenders, who made us stiff drinks all night long! We stayed at our table for over 4 hours and they never made us feel rushed at all. They even put a candle in the Chocolate Mousse Cake and sang me Happy Birthday! Afterwards, we decided to hang out at the Patio Bar. Excellent DJ played a nice mix & we danced all night. What a great birthday! Thanks Velvet Margarita – we’ll be coming back! Pros: Service, atmosphere, patio bar, great food more

Loved this place! 12/20/2009

Came to visit friends in L.A. and they took me here. Wow -- this place was amazing! Décor, music, ambience, outdoor patio bar ...? everything was right on point. Tried the Ahi Tuna with Calamari appetizer & they were both delicious. Friends bought me a drink served in a pineapple ?-- never saw one like that before --? think they call it the "Velvet Margarita". It was tasty, and strong enough that it's the only one I needed all night! After dinner went to patio bar ... bartender had a little bit of an attitude when I tried to order a Corona (apparently they refuse to serve Corona because it's not truly a "Mexican" beer), but that's L.A., I guess ... he was still quite professional. Stayed until 2am (that's late for me!). Loved it & definitely will come again next time I'm in town. Pros: Great Mexican, Patio Bar, Cool Drinks more

Editorial
  • In Short
You'd never guess from the grungy garage facade that this is one hot tamale of a place. Inside, the trendy Mexican lounge and restaurant is carnival fun house-meets-Tijuana kitsch: Blue velvet walls, black-lit Elvis portraits, sombreros on the ceiling and a palette consisting almost entirely of deep shades of red set the scene. Roving mariachis serenade hipsters and revelers sipping pineapple and coconut margaritas, while energetic salsa music booms during their breaks. A full menu is comprised of many calorie-conscious twists on traditional cantina favorites like ahi ceviche, turkey empanadas and tequila-flavored shrimp bisque.

Hits: The crowd is fun and the chips and salsa trio (chipotle, tomatillo and hot bean dip) are some of the best items on the menu. Note: they're free with dinner.

Misses: Unless you have a reservation for a large group, you'll have to wait for a table, which can be painfully slow on weekend nights. Also, the margaritas are very pricey.
