Best

We were told this place had great margaritas and crowd. We weren't disappointed! k

Worst

ugh

This place makes me angry. I looove a good margarita and some Mexican food, but this restaurant has neither. The service was incredibly slow, and instead of apologizing, the wai...

Great visuals... but not worth your money. 2/18/2006

I have been there a couple of times before with friends and liked the decor.. however I really don't think the decor makes up for the studio 54 velvet rope mentality. more

Favorite new spot 1/26/2006

This is such a refreshing place. I am so sick of fusion. The food is great and the decor is adorable. Think Robert R. & Quentin T. movies. I had passed by so many times and just thought it was a bar. It is such a cute place I kinda don't want to tell anyone about it to keep it the way it is. This spot is a 10++++++++++. I will for sure be back many times................So romantic and great vibes from the patrons and staff. Try the ahi tuna ceviche....to die for.......... Pros: Food, Decor, Romantic Cons: None, Nothing, Nada more

10 dollar margaritas??!!! 1/10/2006

I stumbled into Velvet Margarita after getting laid off from my job. Not the perfect place since their "cheap" margies are 10 frigging dollars! I got a mango one and it was good, but not 10 dollars good! more

cool scene! 8/15/2005

In town from NYC and read about this place in Newsweek mag. And have to say was not let down. (You know us Newyorkers!!) Decor was pretty amazing and the Filet Mignon tacos were the best. Ended up staying all night and the best was the DJ playing a Monkeys song in spanish and realized Micky Dolenz was at the next table! PS in love with the patio bartender! Pros: good food, great latin music, hot bartenders Cons: strong drinks, make resos, catch a cab more

Good food, pushy service 8/13/2005

Went here on a date. The tables aren't really set up for close seating. Food was good, although the waitress seemed to ocassionally get lost. The worst part, was the multiple people (waitress, bus boys) who kept trying to clean our table, take our plates (still full of food, BTW) and generally made it clear they wanted our table...in a restaurant only half full. Pros: Good atmosphere Cons: Pushy service more

STAYED ALL NIGHT 7/28/2005

Wow! So, heres the thingI grew up in Hollywood and not too much impresses me at this point, especially the idea of checking out the almost always disappointing hot spot, but after weeks of hearing my friends go on and on about their new favorite place in town, I put my suspicions aside and headed out for the Velvet Margarita. This place was everything they said it would be and more. Live mariachi music, great food (try the Ahi Tacos), margaritas in fresh pineapple shells, this place even had dancing puppets. Definitely a place to get excited about finally. Pros: Ambience more

finally something different! 7/19/2005

I'm Latino and thought I had seen it all! Writing in to say that I finally found a place in LA that makes me proud of my culture. Food AUTHENTIC... not what maybe some people are used to. It's what I grew up on. Art work and decor...you have to go back a few times to take it all in! (which I plan on doing) Bravo! Pros: beautiful, good food Cons: make resos more

Editorial
  • In Short
You'd never guess from the grungy garage facade that this is one hot tamale of a place. Inside, the trendy Mexican lounge and restaurant is carnival fun house-meets-Tijuana kitsch: Blue velvet walls, black-lit Elvis portraits, sombreros on the ceiling and a palette consisting almost entirely of deep shades of red set the scene. Roving mariachis serenade hipsters and revelers sipping pineapple and coconut margaritas, while energetic salsa music booms during their breaks. A full menu is comprised of many calorie-conscious twists on traditional cantina favorites like ahi ceviche, turkey empanadas and tequila-flavored shrimp bisque.

Hits: The crowd is fun and the chips and salsa trio (chipotle, tomatillo and hot bean dip) are some of the best items on the menu. Note: they're free with dinner.

Misses: Unless you have a reservation for a large group, you'll have to wait for a table, which can be painfully slow on weekend nights. Also, the margaritas are very pricey.
