Comforting and caring 3/3/2013

The doctors and staff were absolutely wonderful when the time came for me to put down one of my cats who suffered from cancer. From the moment I arrived at the office, everyone greeted me with compassion and respect for my feelings. Despite the sad reason for my visit that day, I great appreciate all of the love and support I received from everyone at VCA. Thanks again, as your kindness is greatly appreciated. more

The vet I need to see is is never available. 2/13/2011

I have had at least 2 places recommend taking my pet ferrets here, but now that I'm having an emergency, I found out that the doctor I need to see in only in on thursdays and for 2 hours on mondays. I needed him on I tried to take my ferret there on a friday. My ferrets started going downhill very fast, and the will not live long enough to see the vet on thursday. (I have taken my pets to other offices, but they don't know what is wrong with them.) more

Highly Recommend 9/16/2010

After having read these reviews I feel it necessary to write my own...I have been taking my animals (dogs, cats, birds and even my turtle) for maybe 20 years. I agree the receptionists as a group aren't especially friendly, but they get the job done and I don't go there to see them. I have visited Dr's Murphy, Miggins and Wagner and can't say enough positive things about each of them. If my pet needs medical care he/she gets it, if I have a question they answer it and I've never been steered wrong. Of course -- like when we visit human doctors it helps to do your homework and be able to discuss any issues at least somewhat intelligently so you (the patient) can make an informed decision. I have been treated very well by the doctors here in many types of pet situations over the years...and for that, I am thankful they are there. more

Excellent care 9/15/2010

In looking for the hospital's phone number online, I came across this site and happened to notice a few negative reviews, which I felt necessitated a response. I've used this practice for two dogs since the mid 80s and have ZERO complaints. They are extremely professional, friendly to pets, and excellent at diagnosing & treating a myriad of health conditions for pets. As you can see, I'm using my full name, Robert Mendelson, in order to add veracity to this review. more

Avoid VCA Fox Chapel Clinic 4/6/2010

After 2.5 years, and over $2000 dollars spent, $1000 within 8 months on a 12 lb Cairn Terrier rescue, I found VCA Fox Chapel's customer service to go down and their prices to go up! Specifically, in 11/09, my rescue needed dental work. Without question, I paid appox. $700. Just 2 weeks ago (the end of March 2010), I noticed a horrible odor and a growth on his gum as well as hearing him up at night. I scheduled a re-visit. OK, re-visit scheduled for detal noted and confirmed by the desk. I get there, Dr. Murphy said oh..yes there is an infection, we'll put him on antibiotics. Then he has me feel my dogs chest for a couple of lumps that he wants to run a Cytology, fine...all checked out clear. I waited forever at the desk to check out due to a new computer code system. By the time I received the bill, I did not have time to examine it since it was hot and my dogs were in the car. Of the $169 tab, although all other tests were negative and not what I brought the dog in for....I more

Not a very good place to take your animals 2/2/2010

Great vets - we are responsible for our pet's care 8/20/2008

Fox Chapel Animal Hospital has wonderful vets and terrific staff. The thing with most people that own pets is that they want the doctors to have ALL the answers, which they don't and won't. Read a book about your dog so you are able to have an intellectual conversation with your vet and also so you are able to decide for yourself about the care of your pet with whatever is offered to you, and make a "educated" choice. All doctors don't know everything. I have taken all my animals to Fox Chapel and have been treated wonderfully. If I don't want something done to my pet, I say no. That's that. The Vet there has come to my house to deliver medication. He has come to my home on a Sunday afternoon to put my dog down who was extremely ill. I make INFORMED decisions about my pet's care and you should too. more

Fox Chapel Veterinary Hospital (vca) 8/3/2008

Dr. Murphy is my hero . . . he helped me keep my sweet kitty alive almost 22 yrs. One of the younger female vets also assisted me. She taught me a procedure to do at home to keep my kitty comfortable and help maintain a good quality of life. Dr. Murphy makes suggestions that he would do or not do with his own cats (he has a few of his own). He is caring and loving, and has wonder bedside manners. You can see his compassion. I had another cat that had a very strange form of cancer, a double lung cancer - it stumped him. He asked if I minded if he took the x rays to a specialist to confer with them on a diagnosis. Pros: comfortable waiting room, patients all draw to each other, all doctors great, office staff informed and professional Cons: hard geting in and out of parking lot - main road, prices high more

Not the friendliest but saved my ferret 6/6/2008

About 2 years ago, my ferret started to lose his hair (the first visible symptom of adrenal gland cancer). My vet (not Fox Chapel) told me that there was nothing that could be done, but when he started having trouble going to the bathroom, that meant that it would be time to put him down. We watched him continue to lose hair until he was completely naked except for his head and feet. Just by chance, I mentioned this to someone who recommended Dr. Wagner at Fox Chapel. I took my ferret in for a "Des implant," and within a few months, his hair started to come back (the implant shrinks the tumors and stops symptoms). It has now been 18 months, and I have a perfectly happy - and furry - ferret. But I have to say that the people in that office aren't the friendliest group of people. more

Wonderful !!! 11/17/2007

I absolutely love Dr. Resek ! She is an excellent veterinarian and I would highly, highly recommend her to anyone !!! We recently had a mis-hap with our dog and was mis-diagnosed by a different vet here in Pittsburgh. In less than 20 minutes she ran necessary tests and had the problem solved. I will take all of my pets to this hospital ! I have met with the other vets as well and all are very nice and informative ! more

Horrendous experience 6/14/2007

I took my cat when she was sick. The vet was inexperienced, and took tens of unnecessary x-rays which didn't find anything in my cat's stomach. The cost of x-rays was near $1,000. The vet kept on saying the cat's going to die which made me very upset. All my cat needed was an IV fluid to make her feel better. The vet also wanted to open the cat's stomach even after the cat was OK and was ready to go home. She said that she must open the cat's stomach to make sure there is nothing. Absolutely horrendous experience, and I never go there again. more

Terrible, Unfriendly and Uncooperative 2/22/2007

I would never recommend this Vet to anyone: The Vets don't know how to listen, and the receptionists are rude- I've spread this story to our neighborhood meetings, any UPMC-employed pet owner that we know (we've worked there for years), and any pet owner we know: In mid-October, I specifcally asked Dr. Miggins to provide vaccinations for boarding our dog for the next 6 months. When I went to board her in January, the kennel called and said that they could not take her because she was not up-to date on her distemper shot. Not only did Dr. Miggins NOT acknowledge that he had made this mistake, he advised that we had to bring her in for a regular office visit ($42) to get her shot. While I already argued that we had paid for an office visit less than 3 months ago, would be willing to pay for the necessary shot, and ASKED SPECIFICALLY to have her ready for the kennel--he chose to ignore me. I promptly pulled my dog out and found a friendlier vet, who would not charge an office visit to cov more

Great vets, wonderful service 7/27/2006

Having just moved to Pittsburgh and left a veterinary office behind that I loved I wasn't sure that I would find the same kind of service elsewhere. I was not disappointed with VCA Fox Chapel ! The veterinarians are wonderful : compassionate, they took their time to explain things, and overall it was a wonderful experience. As for the other review about the heartworm testing, it is my understanding that you should have your dog tested yearly and it is inappropriate for them to dispense heartworm medications without testing. Also, many of the reasons vets do not like internet pharmacy companies is because they obtain their medications from unknown sources. They want to make sure we get the right medicine. They were very kind and did price match my request. Overall I think this is a great place ! I didn't mind the cost (having come from California it was a relief to see these prices ) ! Plus, I think their quality of care far exceeds that of other hospitals. PROS: Great doctors more

Good service, 11/23/2005

However it is a bit pricy. We were very pleased with the treatment of our animal but felt as thought the price was elevated for the area. We really needed to get our dog in to a vet otherwise we would have gone somewhere more reasonable. more

Avoid this vet 11/13/2005

I went to VCA Fox Chapel Animal Hospital for several years because they were convenient but finally switched because their service was so bad. As an example, I needed to get more heartworm preventative medicine for my dog and when I called to get it, they refused to give me a prescription unless I got it filled with them. This is illegal and when I pointed that out, they said they couldn't give me a prescription at all since my dog hadn't had a test. Since I always take her there, I asked why they hadn't given her the test. They said they could give her the test if I got the prescription filled there. Also, my Grandma's dog is very sick and went there and they said there was nothing they could do (after charging almost $1000 in tests) and another vet was able to help. more
