Editorial review from Citysearch 6/14/2015

Our dog went into labor during the night. With no hospital near us we had to drive to McClave from Santa Clarita. This was July 19, 2005 or thereabouts. My dog had labored for 30 minutes or so when we left for Reseda. Before we left we called to tell them we were coming. On the way, my Yorke delivered one pup halfway. Finally it fell out when I couldn't pull it. But it struggled to breathe, so I began mouth to mouth and CPR. When we arrived, the door was locked. We banged on it amazed,no one was visible. Finally, the girl came walking out like she was taking a walk in the park. I gave her the pup who was gasping. She took it and said ""we need to fill out paperwork."" ""Please, help her we'll give you the money,"" I said. ""I'm sure she'll be fine,"" she said. She took her, and slowly handed her to someone in the back. We waited. They came out shortly, and said it was too late. ""Why were you so slow at taking her?"" I yelled. Well, ""If you hadn't waited so long bringing her her...,"" she said. There was one more pup still undelivered. They told us there was no way she could deliver the pup because the head was too big. We agreed to allow a C Section. They insisted we go home because it would be a while before they could start the procedure. I did not want to leave, but they insisted we go. After we got home, they called and said she had delivered the pup while they weren't watching and the pup was dead. They left her alone and the pup was not rescucitated. Yet, they took $1500 for that. Someone needs to shut them down. more

Six Thousand dollar rip off 7/19/2010

my dog was suddenly breathing hard on 1/23/2010. Just looking at her I could still that she probably had pneumonia. When I got her to McClave they did a x ray and Doctor Hutchinson us, (husband and I) that she had congested heart failure. We disagreed, but she insisted she was right. I insisted on antibiotics just in case. After two days of treatment and a bill for over two thousand dollars, Dr Miller referred her to a heart specialist because she was not responding to treatment. The heart specialist confirmed what we suspected all alone, pneumonia, This cost in additional $2,200.00. She was still not getting any better and I returned her to McClave a few more times, Finally they decided to do the lab work and remove and test the fluid from her lungs, another $700.00 . She had bacterial pneumonia. All together this cost me about $6,000.00!!!! I still owe them 1,600.00. They made other errors as well. Twice they suggested that I have my dog put down because there was nothing that they c more

I've had good luck with McClave 6/12/2009

I've had very good experience with Dr. Sarah Janis and Dr. Greg Sauer at McClave. Both are very intelligent, knowledgeable and kind. I've been taking my cats there for about four years. I haven't noticed any changes in the office since VCA took over, and I'm not sure why there would be unless all of the staff were replaced, which isn't the case here. Both doctors I see have been there many years. more

BAD SERVICE. CORPORATE OWNED NOW. I MOVED TO MID VALLEY VET HOSPITAL 4/9/2009

They are now cold and uncaring. Bought out by a big corporation. The staff and doctors don't seem to care much any more.\r I am now using Mid Valley Vet Hospital in Reseda/Van Nuys. They seem much more competant and prices are much better.\r good luck to all. more

agree with others 11/24/2008

I have to also agree that most of the Doctors there do not know what they are doing. I brought my cat in for an emergency, she was walking into things all of a sudden. The doctor that was assigned to her gave her every test but the right one, and even at my suggestion after looking at the symptoms he refused to give her a simple test that could have saved her vision. The next day when I went to pick her up, he was not there and a anther vet said that she wanted to do one more test before releasing her, she promptly came back to tell me that it was her blood pressure that was elevated and to immediately start her on medication, completely different than the first doctor, needless to say that by his misdiagnoses she became blind. The doctor that did diagnose her left that practice and every other doctor there is not worth going to. Would never go back. more

More than Happy for 25 years 1/17/2008

Sorry to see bad reviews. I have been delighted with McClave's animal care for over 25 years. My friends, neigbors and family go there. I have chosen one doctor who I see regularly (Dr. Khalaf). She is a caring professional, as are other doctors I have encountered over the years. They have recommended Specialists when needed. A newsletter is sent every month or so with lots of helpful tips and good stories. I LOVE McClave! more

REALLY BAD PLACE 12/23/2007

They recommended I put my dog to sleep, as they could not diagnose what was wrong with her. The bill was $1,250. I took her home to say good-bye. I decided to take her for a 2nd opinion. The new Vet prescribed different medications - and she recovered in 3 days. She is now fine. If I listened to them, my dog would be dead.\r Do not go there - there are many caring places for animals, but this is NOT one of them. more

Taking my animals there for 35 years 7/8/2007

and I've never had a bad experience with McClave. Their staff is courteous and helpful. I have ALWAYS received call backs. I've found the vets to be helpful and caring. They are experienced in handling a wide range of emergency and non-emergency problems. They have vets on location 24/7. They handle surgeries, lab work, xrays, prescriptions, special diets, vaccinations, hospital stays and even boarding and/or grooming on site. If you have a particular vet you prefer, you can schedule regular appts Monday thru Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Frankly, I was surprised to see the 3 negative feedbacks given above. I, like one of the other 5 star reviewers, have chosen for 35 yrs. to drive out of my way to take my animals to them. I only hope their quality remains high now that the retired owners have sold out to a larger firm. more

HEARTLESS 5/16/2007

My dog had blood tests done and the vet said they had called numerous times but were not able to reach me. I had left my cell phone number with them, but they kept calling my landline and my answering machine is broken. They should have called my cell phone since it was an emergency. I went to take my dog, Lucy, in for another check up and two days later she was diagnosed with cancer. Three times, the doctor was looking at the wrong file. Once he finally got Lucy's file, he told my mom she was probably going to die that day and that Lucy needed to be put to sleep immediately. I go to school in New York and my mom called me while she was in the doctor's office. She told the doctor that I would be flying home the next morning to say goodbye to Lucy. I heard the doctor raise his voice to her, saying "So, you're going to take her home IN PAIN and let her DIE like that SUFFERING???" At such an emotional, hurtful time that was NOT a way to respond to someone who has spent 15 years with this more

At such an emotional, hurtful time that was NOT a way to respond to someone who has spent 15 years with this dog, who wasn't just a dog but a family member. This whole vet experience made it extremely difficult to cope with Lucy's death. I keep thinking I should have taken her somewhere else and maybe this could have been treated a lot better. Also, I have to add, if they knew she was going to die and that we didn't have any other dogs, why did they let my mom buy a box full of canned dog food? more

Definitely not in it for the love of animals 1/10/2007

I would personally never recommend this clinic. I had a two year old cat that had stopped eating and was told that she had fatty liver disease and that it was entirely curable. The vet refused to begin treatment until they received a deposit of $1300 to keep her overnight to observe her; after paying this amount, I was called the next day and told that a feeding tube needed to be installed (for lack of a better word) and that it could only stay in for two weeks. Upon picking my cat up, I was then told to pay $800 more for the feeding tube operation, which I did, thinking that it would save my cat. Her neck became infected where the feeding tube had been inserted after about two days, so I brought her back and was told to continue with the cleaning that I had been doing and forcing food down her, as it would work; this was after another $300 for the follow up visit. A week after this, we brought her back again because she had lost three more pounds and wasn't getting any better; the feeding tube had come loose from it stitches and the infection was getting worse. The vet told me at this point that the feeding tube could stay in for months and I refused; $600 after having the feeding tube removed and the wound sewn up, I find out from another vet that my cat did have a rare liver disease (not fatty liver, as I was told by McClave) and she wound up dying from it because it wasn't curable. I would never recommend this vet to anyone; save yourself the money and go to Affordable Vet on San Fernando Mission instead; they're much cheaper, more friendly and compassionate toward animals, and they are completely honest and more than willing to work with you to attempt to save your animal. I did have pet insurance for my cat and was told that McClave is a contracted provider and my costs should have been$850 for all that was done, but McClave told me that a contracted rate is just a suggestion, not what they're supposed to charge. Keep your animals safe and away from this vet! Pros: none Cons: highly inflacted costs, lack of courtesy and honesty, lack of professionalism, lack of knowledge more

Not recommended! 11/22/2006

About a year ago or so, my dog had an ear infection and i wanted to take my pup to my vet and my vet didn't have any openings for that day. I thought it was necessary to take my dog in to see a professional, so i had gone to mc clave animal hospital because they didn't require an appointment. So i took my dog in, and first of all, they took him to the "back" to do all of the work, the vet there, Dr, Khalaf prescribed my poor dog prednazone (which might i add is a very strong steroid and was very unnecessary in my dogs case, my poor dog had an upset stomache from withdrawls for a whole week) they charged me $200 for an ear infection (which by the way just needed some ear drops and nothing more) I was a new dog owner and wasn't aware of any of this until now. I really would not recommend this place because ever since i went there my dog does not let me even touch his left ear, the ear they "took care of". They're over priced, and in my opinion not professional at all! Pros: No appt. necessary. Cons: Very expensive and not professional more

Make the drive to McClave 9/25/2006

I've been here twice and both times I have had good service. I'm not quite sure what the 'hood is like after-hours, but I had an indication after having to dial an intercom to get buzzed into the lobby. Anyways, I've had two good doctors, both of which were no-nonsense, and I saved a bunch of cash (see All Creatures for my rant about price gouging). Pros: open 24 hours. best option for Santa Clarita, and others near Reseda more

Will never go back 9/19/2006

First off, TWO of their doctors mis-diagnosed an eye condition in my dog EVEN THOUGH they knew he'd had the same symptoms in his other eye that ended up requiring surgery. I got fed up with them and went to see the specialist on my own 'cause I (NOT being trained as a vet) could tell the problem was serious. The specialist did the surgery the day I brought him in and was very puzzled by their mistake.\r \r Secondly, one of my other dogs had escaped from the back yard and was gone for about at day. When I found her, she had obviously been attacked by something and was seriously injured. She was bleeding and looked terrible and even I had blood on me and, when I rushed her to them, they SEROUSLY told me that I'd have to wait for AT LEAST AN HOUR because they were busy. She was a patient of theirs!! DISGUSTING. PROS: Close to home CONS: lack of caring & compassion, staff is rude, doctors are unreliable more

Disappointed 9/12/2006

I was disappointed with the lack of return calls from the doctors. Only one doctor returned our call, but she was not always on duty. I brought my dog there for medical care and I was always reminded to call if I had any questions. Unfortunately we were always told that the doctor would call back when we had a question, but never did. We had so many unanswered questions that we were forced to go some place else. It's sad to say but now I have lost my 11 month old puppy due to lack of communication. PROS: A few of the techs and receptionists were very nice. CONS: more

AMAZING!! 1/7/2006

I found McClave as a result of an emergency situation, as they are open 24 hours. From then on, I used them as our regular veterinarian.......there is no one better! Not only did they treat my puppy with TLC, but they treated me that way as well. They are quite a distance for me to drive, but there isn't any other place I would trust my 3 dogs to. more

When you need help 7/9/2005

From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with an educated vet staff. They were caring, gave us updates on how our animal was doing, and very compassionate. Definitely a place that cares about the health and welfare of animals. I would recommend them for any pet cares and definintely their emergency service! more
