I have been a loyal client of CJ (Carl-James Cassaday) for 10 years. I started with him at Umberto Camden, followed him to Umberto LA and now, will follow him onto Gavert Atelier. He is the best colorist in town. Period. Any town, for that matter. My first consultation, he was kind, calm, down to earth and told me what he would suggest to do for my highlighted hair. However, he suggested I come back in a few weeks until I had more growth to work with. So, an honest to goodness artist who wasn't just after my cash--he could have easily done my hair anyway. more

My hair color had always been dark brown-black. I wanted to go blonde and knew it would be hard or near impossible. I didn't want to compromise my healthy hair and I hoped Umberto would be the place where I wouldn't have to. After much consideration and reading the previous review regarding CJ, I decided to make an appointment. It was the best move I've made about my hair in years! He is an extremely talented, caring, considerate Stylist. I've gone from dark to a beautiful Honey Blonde with a great cut! I get loads of compliments and look forward to my appointments. First off this guy makes you feel relaxed and comfortable in a high end Beverly Hills Salon. Immediately he took me to his tucked away/private two seater station where he offered me refreshments and lunch from their own cafe! Cool! He gave me a thorough consultation and not ONLY asked me what i was looking for but why I landed in his chair...what was missing from my last stylist and what didn't they give me and why I left!? Which know one has done before! I have a triple process you girls know what I mean...He emphasized how he promises to give me color that grows out so well with his horseshoe highlights he will actually get longer life out of my highlights by his painting techniques. Now I am a loyal client of 4 years and very happy! Which is nothing considering he has been with the Umberto team for 17 years and is only in his mid 30's! Who knows what level this guy will go too...he caters equally with celebs and everyday people and makes me feel like the best I can be. Everyone I have sent to Carl James has left falling for this guys sweet midwestern background and his keen sense of style! His consistency keeps me coming back again and again...he is a great value and my personal treasure! His regulars call him CJ become one you won't be sorry! more

I went to no less than 5 places trying to find a colorist who could master turning my brown hair into NATURAL-looking blonde tresses. I literally tried Sally Hershberger-John Frieda, Frederic Fekkai, Jonathan, Jose Eber, and one other - I kid you not... I spent over $1500 trying to get the perfect color and no one could make me blonde without making my hair brassy or a bit orange. Finally, a good friend of mine (who has fabulous hair) recommended Carl-James at the Umberto Salon on Camden - and, I was saved. Not only did he give me the most natural blonde color ever, he gave me a cut that has gotten rave reviews (even from strangers) ever since! I have sent nearly all my friends his way and they all feel exactly the same way - CJ is a hair genius!! more

Ive had my fair share of badly botched hair-donts in this lifetime. Some places might get the color right on a good day or the cut, but seldom both. What a discovery I made a year ago to find Charles LaRue at Umberto. He has the gift of both scissors and the bottle (color bottle not alcohol). He listens, imparts good advice but ultimately does what I want. The result, I leave the chair feeling like I got the best cut ever again and again. On those days when Im doing more than a roots touch up, the full two-color process with highlights and a cut, Umbertos sandwich counter is a salvation.
