The only reason this restaurant got two stars from me is largely due to their delicious pad Thai. The service is tragic, and the management is even worse. I live less than a block...

Awesome Pad Thai and Chicken Satay 6/7/2009

We were at Tum Rup Thai for the first time last night. The occasion was a family celebration. Of the things we ordered, Chicken Pad Thai and Chicken Satay stood out. My wife was drawing comparisons with other Thai restaurants and exclaimed that the Pad Thai that she has ever had. It was really good. My daughter likes Chicken Satay a lot and she relised the dish like anything. Pros: Good ambience, great food Cons: Service more

Rude & Unfriendly Staff.... 11/14/2008

We had heard some good things about this place from our friends and decided to try it out. It was Thursday evening, me and my boyfriend got their at 9:40pm. There was nobody at the host stand as we got in so we stood waiting as the restaurant seemed busy. We stood their literally 7-10 min as a couple of servers walked by without even acknowledgeing us. Finally i stopped one of the servers to see if someone could help. She left saying that a host would be back shortly. Few min later when i stopped her again as no one had come to assist us she had a big attitude and told us that they were done seating for the evening. I was just suprised to hear that responce........after waiting for almost 15 min this is the best she could do........Dint bother to speak to anyone else as this was outright rude.............WILL NEVER GO BACK AGAIN. Cons: Rude and Unfriendly Staff...... more

Good for a date or a group 11/11/2008

The decor is inviting and relaxing. The booths are spacious and comfortable, I think its suitable for a date or a group outing. The food is good, though I thought it was a bit on the sweet side. However, the food orders came out sooner than expected, maybe because I went during a Monday night? The customer service could definently be improved for such an establishment. Otherwise, my first visit was good, and I would probably go back. Pros: Ambience Cons: Parking more

4 STARS ALL AROUND!!!! 10/10/2008

Despite some of the reviews posted here we decided to give Tum Rup Thai a try for dinner last Friday night. We got there about 6:30 and were greeted promptly at the door by a Thai gentleman who took us to a table right away.( It was a huge booth) Our server was prompt and seemed to be quite knowledgeable about the menu. He suggested a few of his favorites which we tried. The beef jerky was out of this world and the Gold Bags were equally as delicious. Pros: Everything was great Cons: Not a one more

WORST SERVICE I'VE EVER HAD! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! 10/4/2008

Took a friend to Tum Rup for a birthday lunch this week. This is the first and last time we will go to this restaurant. Even though there were only 8 other diners it took 5 minutes for anyone to acknowledge and seat us. It took another 10 minutes to ask if we wanted a beverage. 15 minutes later, Gabe (I'm not surprised I saw his name in another bad review) took our order. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, but we quickly were thirsty, since the food was spicy, and were never offered refills. Gabe was no where to be found, so I had to go to the bar and ask for a box to take the food home. The girl was extremely rude. We waited and waited for the bill. The worst part of the experience was how sick I got soon after I got home! Spare yourself frustration and a horrendous stomach ache and pick another restaurant. more

One of the best Thai restaurants in the Twin Cities 8/15/2008

This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the Twin Cities. The food is amazing - the pad thai, spring rolls, green curry and red pineapple curry are all very good. The seafood they use tastes very fresh and is always cooked perfectly. I have never been disappointed with anything I have ordered here. Pros: amazing food Cons: can get quite loud more

Good Food / Terrible Service 8/15/2008

The only reason this restaurant got two stars from me is largely due to their delicious pad Thai. The service is tragic, and the management is even worse. I live less than a block away from Tum Rup Thai. I had gone there for a year before I finally called it quits. Each time I went, the staff grew consistently ruder. As time went by I became more and more disheartened. Finally after several charges for extra sauce I never received and putting up with the rude and impatient staff, I decided that I could no longer bare it. Then one night my roommate ordered the pad Thai - after smelling the delicious dish, I decided to give Tum Rup Thai one last chance. I ordered my favorite combo for lunch mock duck/ tofu pad Thai. I went to pick it up and I was suprised, I was charged nearly $15.00 for my pad Thai. When I asked why I was charged this much, I was told that I added tofu. Because I had never been charged extra for my half and half before, I was floored. The waiter haughtily said, ""it is not my problem, I do not make the prices,"" and walked away. I stood there dumbfounded and a bit hurt. I was a regular and my roommate was a regular from the time the Tum Tup Thai opened. To make matters worse, when I got home, I realized there was 3 1/2 pieces of tofu, and a half serving of pad Thai (i.e. the cook gave me a lunch special serving and the waiter charged me full price). I just paid $15.00 for this! I was outraged, so I called back and told the boy who answered the phone what happened. He told me that Jack, the manager, would call me back when he got in. Jack never called me back... I dropped it because Tum Rup Thai obviously does not care about their customers. Why put myself through the head ache? This is all so unfortunate because the food is actually very good. The service takes the flavor, enjoyment and trust right out of the experience. If you want to go some where you do not have to tip, this would be the place. Delicious food - terrible service. Pros: Food Cons: Service & Prices more

Best Pad Thai! 5/19/2008

I went to Tum Rup Thai for a birthday dinner, and I had the best chicken pad thai I've ever tasted. The server said their pad thai is rated in the top 10 in the nation, and I don't doubt it! It was a huge portion that gave me two lunches worth of leftovers -- great value and delicious food. I'm already craving more. Pros: Amazing pad thai more

Fantastic Food...Shaky Service 5/13/2008

I had heard good things about Tum Rup Thai and asked my girlfriends to join me there to celebrate my birthday. Our server, Gabe, came by shortly after we arrived and took our drink orders. At least 15 minutes later a different server brought half our drinks. We had to flag Gabe down to stop by to take our food order. We weren't in a hurry by any means put our patience was running short. We ordered apps and dinner...which came out at the same time. I ordered the Sweet Green Curry, which was really great but I had to ask the manager to bring my side of rice as it was not brought out with my order. Pros: Food & ambience Cons: Service more

Watch out for rude/attitude Jack!!! 1/20/2008

We usually eat in at lunch or early dinner when we practically have the restaurant to ourselves. We like the food and the servers are usually helpful. We have always gotten attitude from manager/host Jack and we simply try to ignore him, hoping his tenure at the restaurant will pass before our patience. This last time he was over the top rude and would not accommodate our party of 6. Never mind he had several empty tables, or that it was only 6pm or that we were trying to work out some solution. Emperor Jack did not want his authority questioned. Thank goodness there are about 3 Thai restaurants in a 3 block radius and we were greeted with exceptional kindness and superb service at Chaing Mai Thai!! more

Generic 11/7/2007

If you're insterested in Thai food because its what everyone else is interested in, and you like granite bars, moody lighting, high-priced cocktails, Tom Rup Thai is the place to go, a restuarant as generic as everything else in uptown now. Pros: You like Style Cons: You like Substance more

You are better off at the King and I 6/12/2007

My wife and I tried this resturant earlier this spring and the food was good but not great. The service was good but not great. If you need a place to go in Uptown give Tum Rup a try but don't make it first on your list. more

The green curry dishes and long life soup is the best in town! 6/10/2007

We live in the neighborhood and we go to Tum Rup quite a bit, it is a favorite of the locals and we have met many of our friends there from around the metro area and friends who are visiting from around the country. We like to order 'family style' , its a great way to eat at Tum Rup. Usually a few appitizers for four and no more than three main courses for four..there is always plenty of food to go around..we have always Pros: variety, great interior space/design, easy parking behind the building, green and red curries... Cons: can be crowded on Friday/ Saturday..although good people watching, could have better out door dining space, maybe a few plants? more

Fast food with a liquor license 6/5/2007

I recommend the hard candy chocolate mints in the basket at the front, that's about it. If you want good Thai food, go to True Thai. Pros: Uptown location Cons: Bad food, be prepared to wait to use the bathroom more

Best in ths Twin Cities! 4/19/2007

I have visited Tum Rup many times and I have had a great experience every time. The service is always nice, friendly and helpful. Our server always does a great job recommending dishes and letting us know exactly how much food we will need to order. I love to have a variety of flavorful dishes and the portions are large enough to share if you go with a group. For the most part, they are happy to leave something out if you don't like a particular ingredient. The specialty cocktails are great. I love the Thai-rone martini. It fabulous! The chefs pay attention to food presentation which makes the food that much more enjoyable. The mango with sweet sticky rice is my favorite desert in the Twin Cities. The fried bananas are great as well. They are breaded with a tempura type batter and covered with honey. There as sweet as this Thai experience! Pros: Service, specialty cocktails Cons: parking can be a pain more

Not so good, Ok food and so so service. 4/2/2007

I went to Tum Rup Thai for the first time today and found it disappointing overall. I have been to both Sawatadee and Chang Mai Thai before and find them to be better. Chang Mai is the best of them all. We ordered chicken Pad Thai and I think the noodles were under cooked. I could not chew them. It was like eating flavored rubber bands. The taste was fine but maybe too sweet. We also had the fresh spring rolls, and crab cheese wontons. Those were both good. Last we had Mangos with sticky rice for Desert. Not good at all. I have had it before many times and also once at Chang Mai and it was much better. The Mango had little taste and the rice was, well, too sticky and overdone. more

Worst service I've ever experienced! 3/31/2007

Although the food was pretty good, (minus the desert which I will get to later), the service was by far the worst I have ever experienced. Every step of the way the service was rude, slow, and did not seem to care how long they made anyone wait. All in all, the whole dining experience took us 3 hours and that was certainly not by choice! My friends and I now joke that Tum Rup Thai is the only restaurant where you may want to bring your own food with you as well. Also, I would definitely not reccomend Tum Rup Thai for a first date, just in case it is going badly and you need to get out fast! This is definitely not the place for that. If I eat at Tum Rup Thai again it will be for carry-out as I do not have the patience to wait 3 hours and be rudely served in the process. Pros: The main courses were fine. The desert was terrible! Cons: service! more

poor service, poor service, poor service 1/7/2007

We decided to return for New Years with a few friends, becasue of the amazing food that we got on my 31st birthday over the summer. We were disaointed from the moment we got in the door at 7:30 pm. Service was horrible, the server did not have a good understanding of the drinks we ordered, ie- a dirty gin martini- pretty basic, but it was made with vodka and no olive juice. We were given aproximately 3 minutes from the time our drinks were brought to us to see if we were ready to order- which open menus and no copnversation at our table should signify we werenn't ready. Once our orders were taken we had to sit in utter agany and listen to horrible 8o0's satelite music. We were disapointed that the beautiful decor was not matched by more appropritae music. We were also disapointed that Tum Rup was not offering anytype of New Years drink specials or a complimentary glass of champagne- in fact non of the servers, hostess' even mentioned the fact that it was new years eve. I could tell that some others seated around us were disapointed as well, some of even felt overdressed. OUr food was not nealry as flavorful as our first experience, in fact two of our guests stopped eating their food it was so undesireable. my pad thai was somewhat cold and appeared to have more bean sprouts and garnish than noodles and chicken. Although the room was not packed, our server seemed to disapear- infact she did'nt even bring our food, and the only time we saw her again was when we flagged her down for our bill. We each only had one drink, because we couldn't get anyone's attention long enough to oder another. In total 4 people each had one drink, two split appetizers and 4 entree's. Our bill was a little over $100. more
