Best

I love the Food here it was amazing and very tasteful the atmosphere is beautiful and I give trhe staff a 5 Star. Keep up the good work here I will be letting everyone know about ...

Worst

I like the fire pit outside and that's about it. The bar area is ugly, outdated and with too many softball teams. The prime rib that I had here was possibly the worst I've ever ha...

Was the best Scallops 6/13/2006

Where did it go? We visited Tryg's the other night and were somewhat astonished by what we saw. It took at least 10 minutes to be greeted at the door. Our server was apparently not informed that she had us because it took another 10 to be greeted by her. In the past we have overlooked the service here because the food had made up for it. Upon finding out the scallop dish was no longer the same (we loved it); we simply got up and left. I feel a twinge of guilt in pulling such a stint but..... Oh well; just thought I'd put a holla out that this restaurant is apparently in need of major help and detour signs should be put in front. Pros: Beautiful ambiance Cons: service; disappearing signature dish?? more

Horrible experience.... 6/8/2006

I went to Tryg's with a group of five and not one of us was happy with any aspect of the place save the ambiance. It took 15 minutes for our server to show and another 15 before we got the drinks.....this was the speedy part of our service! Food was an hour wait (on a Thursday) and it was either cold or over done. While the drinks tasted good (we ordered beer, wine and mixed drinks) I felt the price was exsessive. Our server was friendly but obvioulsy in over her head. First and last time at Tryg's. more

What a disapointment 4/28/2006

We just dined at Tryg's tonight. My husband and I had gone for his birthday in Feb. and we thought the food was really good, but the service was terrible. Being fair, we took my parents in tonight to try it again. The server forgot our appetizer and 3 out of four meals we had were cold and bland. The manager came by and said ""sorry, you have desserts on the way."" But when the bill came, we found that they had comped only one dessert. After some discussion with the server, all four were comped., but the manager never did come by again to explain. We found the salmon to be good but the prime rib and aujus were served ice cold (not even room temp) and the shrimp was incredibly overcooked. We will not be back. Pros: Valet, Bathrooms Cons: Service, Food, Music level more

Incredible Atmosphere 3/21/2006

One of the better places to visit. Unique patio area features fire pit and stadium seating! Valet parking offered. Menu changes with seasons and is always very good. Chef Dorwart's menu always intrigues you but never leaves you unsatisfied. Wine list is good. If you can, snag a booth .. private and large enough for a family. Very cool lightning and atmosphere add to this wonderful place. Bar area is big enough for a large crowd but the noise never gets too loud. I'd recommend it any day of the week. Pros: valet parking, great food, fire pit and patio Cons: no parking space, can be $$$, no smoking more

Liked it a lot!!! 1/23/2006

I thought the food was extremely good. I loved the place. It was our first time there. I thought the service was very attentive. We had a very nice time. It is pretty pricey for the amount that you get, but if that is all I can find to complain about I think they did ok. We will definitely visit again soon. A great date place. Loved the fireplace. It was so cozy and welcoming. Thank you for a wonderful evening. Pros: romantic, parking, food Cons: price more

How About Answering The Phone for once! 1/5/2006

It's 9:45am on a Friday, and it's virtually impossible to find out if they take lunch reservations, as they have NO prompt for reservations on their voice mail. Only an option for the 'kitchen staff' exists, and if I know restaurants, the kitchen staff are the last people who want to 'take' reservations. Furthermore, they have 6 options on their VM, but NONE for reservations, except for a note that says 'reservations NOT ACCEPTED via voicemail. But when you zero out to the operator, NOBODY ANSWERS, and it returns you to voicemail hell. Thus, our party will look elsewhere. Nice job. Nora wouldn't have treated us this way! more

Very Blah 12/7/2005

Pretty, but the lighting was so dim we could barely see the menu. I feel more thought went into the design of the restaurant than thought went into the menu items. I can't complain about the food because it was OK but it wasn't great. While the prices weren't inflated I would expect to get more oomph for the price. It's disappointing that you go out and spend a certain amount of money on things you feel like you could get at other mainstream restaurants for less or something you could easily make for yourself at home. My husband and I were not at all impressed, and harbor no grudge - but will not be going back and feel we can't recommend this place to anyone looking for an exciting dining experience or for a great value. At the very least our server was very attentive and friendly. Pros: Ample Parking, Good Service Cons: Blah Food. more

Food Phenomenal!!! 10/19/2005

Tryg's was excellent all the way around. The food that we had was incredible. The service was friendly, the mood was nice, uptownish-but good. The fireplace was awesome. It really made it seem very charming and romantic. We had reservations and were seated immediately. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the food on the menu. 2 of our group had the pheasant wrapped with lobster. It was excellent. Very moist and very delicious. I had the scallops. They were beyond good. I can't tell you the last time I have had scallops that were that big and that good. Way to go Chef Philip, you out did yourself. I am very happy to say that we will be back. Tryg's is a definite must try if you haven't yet. A little on the spendy side, but well worth it. A nice addition to this part of Uptown and Lake Calhoun. Pros: good parking, romantic, knowledgable staff Cons: spendy more

More mediocrity 9/26/2005

Tryg's came highly recommended by two friends, so I was excited to try it for my birthday. We were totally underwhelmed. Spicy onion rings weren't the least bit spicy. Very disappointing. Nice and crispy, but very, very greasy -- served with basic ketchup -- no spice at all aside from salt. Vegetarian platter sounded interesting, though we're not vegetarians. Selections were heavy and overly salted. Brussels sprouts were tough and bitter in heavy cheese based sauce. Crab cake was just okay -- the heavy creamy texture overwhelmed what may have been a very nice sauce with a nice white fish. The sweet corn cakes were so heavily fried that I couldn't taste the sweet corn flavor. The worst $80 meal (for two) that we've ever had. (At least the Chianti was nice.) more

Love the atmosphere! (Well, most of it) 9/21/2005

Great place for a date if you are looking for ambience. The setting is very Frank Lloyd Wrightish and is beautiful on a hot summer day or a cold winter night. Very cozy and impressive! The food selections are limited, the mixed drinks are not especially up to par and the service is so/so. If you dine outside, it can be a bit noisy near the road, and tables are crowded. The outdoor grill is set up so the smoke blows right in your face. So expect to smell like a fire pit when you leave. The valet parking, live music and great location (near Calhoun) are big plusses. Pros: ambience, setting Cons: limited food options, crowded outdoors more

Pleasantly surprised! 9/14/2005

Wasn't sure what to expect, based on reviews I've seen on here. My boyfriend and I were VERY pleasantly surprised! I went there to ""research"" the site for an upcoming dinner I'm planning at my company. To start we had the Panko Fried Calamari-so light and tender, accompanying Aioli really made this dish. My boyfriend had the Oven Roasted Pork Shank w/spicy onion rings & corn cakes-SCRUMPTIOUS! I had the Flank Steak Salad-superb. We ended with a divine dessert served in a small flower pot of all things! Layers of coffee soaked cake, Mascarpone Cream and chocolate mousse-topped with a mint sprig and an edible Orchid, one of the yummiest things I've ever had! A unique wine list-the two we tried based on our server's recommendations, very good-Fess Parker Chardonnay 2002, and Lyeth Meritage 2002. By far, one of the nicest meals I've had in Minneapolis in a long time. more

Room for improvement 8/4/2005

Very nice restaurant - clean and new and modern. Easy parking. Roasted beet salad was delightful and reasonably priced. The cookie plate desert, however, was appalling. The cookies were, at best, a day old. Go for lunch and enjoy the wine list - at least they list the vintage, which is a step above basic dining. Do not expect gastronomic life alteration. Pros: good parking, outdoor seating, decor Cons: mediocre food, loud more

Mediocrity in Minneapolis. . . 7/28/2005

A redo of the old Nora's, the location is the same but the decor is expensively updated. Seems to be a hip spot with live jazz, a busy cocktail scene and many singles angling to be seen. The food is average for such an upscale place. A unique offering was a meatloaf sandwich which was good if but a bit salty. Only problem was that they charged $15 for it. $15 for meatloaf! There was the expected salmon, a roast chicken and other standard fare that every other restaurant in town seems to serve. The food was good but not out of this world. The wine list has the usual and annoying 100-150% markup with surprisingly limited offerings and the service was very average for such a high price point. Bottom line: This popular location is good for cocktails and snacks but a serious dining destination it is not. Pros: Outdoor dining, Ample parking, Live jazz Cons: Service was subpar, Value is lacking, Food is ok, not great more

Room for Improvement 7/7/2005

Have been a couple of times and it's nothing special. Service is spotty. Can't beat the location and the outdoor tables are nice, but awfully close to the road so it's a bit noisy. Had to send food back both times which I rarely do. Probably won't be around too long with all of the other options in the area. Pros: Location, Location, Location Cons: It's just okay more

I want to like Trygs 6/4/2005

I want to like Trygs because I really loved Table of Contents and miss it terribly. My experience with Trygs was this winter and the food was awesome, we sat at the bar and had dinner and a bottle of wine... wine list was really accessable and familiar and not too spendy. I guess I wasn't wowed though... as it has not made it on our dinner rotation list and is in our 'hood. Just so-so. Pros: service atmosphere, use of artisan cheese, foie gras! Cons: no wow factor more
