Nice high end Italian in Napa 3/27/2009

The wine selection was large, as it should be in the middle of wine country. The service was very charming and the duck was prepared perfectly Pros: Good homemade farfale Cons: pricey and need reservations more

Disappointing given the ambiance 3/14/2009

The property is really cool and we got a chance to soak it all in while we waited for a table near the bar. Their wine selection is pretty decent and I ended up with a nice merlot from Clearwater Creek. We started with beef carpaccio and mozzarella with garlic and olive oil bread, which were fantastic together. However, our mains (my girlfriend had the rigatoni alla carbonara, with guanciale bacon and parmesan while I had maltagliati verde with slow-cooked pork and sangiovese wine sugo) were both terribly salty and overpowering in general. I liked how the rigatoni was spicy but the sauce was just too strong, while my maltagliati (which apparently means badly-cut pasta?) simply tasted like meat and was also far too strong a dish, demanding loads of red wine to wash it all down. A friend ordered the ribeye steak which was tasty if not a bit average. Overall it seemed like the restaurant catered to rich people who have no taste buds because they've been downing wine samples all day (or at this point are too drunk to care what their food tastes like). Another friend mentioned their lunches were decent, so I'd be up for that before ever having dinner here again. On the plus side, we drank so much water with dinner that we won't have hangovers tomorrow! Pros: great starters, wine selection Cons: mains too salty and just overpowering more

beautiful decor inside and out, friendly staff, delicious food 8/13/2008

I recently dined at Tra Vigne during a visit to wine country and after a long day of wine tasting. Made reservations through opentable and was seated immediately. The decor is beautiful instide and the courtyard seating is as well. We had the smoked mozzerella ravioli which was very tasty, and the rigatoni carbanara which was equally delivious. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive, and I would gladly return and would highly recommend Tra Vigne for anyone in the area. Pros: no dogs, friendly staff, beautiful ambiance Cons: a little pricey, but what isn't in wine county? more

tre rude 10/29/2007

According to some people, this is one of the best place to eat in Napa. Well don't waste your time and your money. This place is awfull. I ordered a prosciutto and tomato sandwich but somehow the prosciutto was missing from my sandwich. My friend ordered pappardelle pasta with tomato sauce for $14, something simple, and it was flavorless. The menu is very limited and boring, so are the people who worked there. Pros: great ambiance Cons: awfull food, bad management more

LIKED THE LAST REVIEW....LOL (DOG IN A HIGH END RESTAURANT)....HMMMM? 9/27/2007

First of all the food and atmosphere are fantastic. Most of my guests were a little Pros: Beautiful Place ! more

HORRIBLE customer service 7/7/2007

It was the worst service I experience in the wine country!!!!!! We are dog owners so it's very important to visit a restaurant with patio seating. We've visited Tra Vigne's website and it was also a highly recommended one from a friend who lives locally, so we thought it should be a great spot to enjoy our evening. We called early to make an appointment, and requested a patio table since we have a dog. It was July 5th and the wine country was having a huge heat wave, and we were early to the area and had to wandering around the area under the sun while feeling dehydrated. Finally the wait was over. I went up to the hostess, and guess what he said? ""I am sorry but we have a private party at the patio, and we will not be seating anyone outside."" Cons: bad customer service. no sincerety more

Beautiful Setting 7/11/2006

Sitting outside is recommended; it is beautiful. The food was good; the wines by the glass were fitting. Afterward we took a stroll. Amazing! Pros: Outdoor Seating, Food, Wine Cons: they don't accept Amex more

Surprisingly good after all these years 10/26/2005

Had lunch with a party of 6 last Saturday. Had been at least 5 years since I had been their last. Food was suprisingly excellent. Loved the fritto misto, beet rissoto, Agnolotti (sp?) with lamb, all of the Contorni were great. Service was OK at best. Waiter definitely not ""in tune"" with our needs - water, wine glasses going empty, forgetting to open our second bottle, etc... Highly recommend for a lunch of grazing. Overall impressive considering the size of this place. Pros: food, outdoor seating Cons: service more

User review by miasmom 10/9/2005

Seated promplty, but noticed others having a difficult time being seated. Some patrons waiting became annoyed and left beofre being seated. Attractive dining room, but got very noisey after 7pm. Recap of food: Appetizers- calamari a bit bland, sauce could have been seasoned more. Antipasti plate basic, not thrilling. Salads- not enough dressing Main course- Squash ravioli, excellent! Short ribs, outstanding!!! Too stuffed for desert. more

Huge Dissapointment 8/28/2005

I guess I asked for it because I went after reading all of these terrible reviews but I had wanted to go to this place for a long time and was finally going to be in the Napa area so I hoped that everyone was wrong. They were not. Don't waste your money at this place when there are so many other wonderful restaurants in Napa. We had the grilled calamari for appetizer which was ok, then split the papardelle with duck ragu - no taste at all and then the lamb which was incredibly tough. $120 dollars later, I left annoyed and hungry because I didn't even finish my food. The only thing good about this place is the staff - they were all very nice. Cons: food, food, food more

This Is Not What It Used To Be 8/8/2005

It saddens me to write this. Tra Vigne used to be one of my favorite Bay Area restaurants, but it has gone downhill rapidly over the last year and a half. If you will notice, the last good review in this space is from 2003! Until it recovers its former glory, which hopefully it will, stay away. Pros: Ambience Cons: Service, Food more

Very Disappointed 02/2005 2/12/2005

Seated promptly. We ordered 3 different Salads between 4 of us, all good. Appetizer was Calamari, 5 pieces! BUT it had alot of Fava Beans. Not much flavor. Ordered 3 different Entrees between us, All were very small portions and the taste was barely average. For the rather large bill we feel taken advantage of. Pros: quick seating, atmosphere, Bus Boys Cons: regular food, mediocre service, VERY small portions more

Heaven 8/19/2003

I dream of this place and any time that I am within 100 miles of it, I have to go. Sit in the outdoor courtyard and you will experience the lazy attmosphere of napa valley, with a hint of tuscany breezing through the canopy of trees. The parmesian custard is good enough to create a sensoral memory that you will not soon forget. I recommend Tra Vigne whole-heartedly and cannot wait to return again myself. more

Great Restaurant 6/21/2003

This restaurant was very good. A very nice atmosphere. They have good service and very good food. Try the short ribs. They were out of this world. Pros: Delicious food, Great Servers Cons: Very loud, Crowded more

A Nice Place 1/20/2003

My wife and I went there for dinner a couple of weeks ago. I had the braised beef ribs, wife had the crab pasta. We shared the brocoli/spinach rabe. I thought the ribs on polenta was tasty, meat VERY tender with good flavor. Wife's pasta was OK. The pasta ""sauce"" really overpowered any crab in there. The veggies were tasty, if a bit salty. The wine was good, the cheapest white in the place. The desert, we split a creme brulee and it was fantastic (with huckleberries). Service was very good, and attentive even for rubes like us (strangely we never got water, but then we did not ask). BTW, the restrooms are pretty bad. Pros: good bar, quiet, service Cons: expensive, a little pretentious, restrooms more
