Toyama is by far the best Japanese steakhouse in Nashville! The staff is friendly, the bathrooms are clean, the chefs are AMAZING, and that yum-yum sauce could be the most tasty thing I EVER ate, I could put it on everything!....I contacted the TN State board of health too see all posted health scores for Toyama and was delighted to discover that Toyama has never scored below a 93 as a matter of fact Toyama has scored 100's consecutively for the past 15 months, which is unheard of this day and age! I had the pleasure to bump elbows with a few stars while i dined there...a TN titian football player, Dolly Partton, and Hank Williams Jr....It was quite exciting to say the least! My hibachi seared tuna was to die for....The entire experience was AMAZING! Being Asian American I can be a bit picky when it comes to homeland cuisine however Toyama had me craving more the very next day! more

I have eaten here several times. This place never disappoints. I had one incident with a server who was brand new and had no business in any kind of customer service job. He was not there since then. The owner personally addressed my concerns with that server. I will definitely be back again and again. more

Best Crunchy Shrimp roll I've tried! 5/22/2011

I really have enjoyed Toyama Japanese Steak house. I usually have Hibachi grill, and their chicken, and steak is good, and the shrimp is really great. The prices are about average, but are better at lunchtime. I really love their crunchy shrimp roll, they have a sesame seed mix in the rice, that makes it tasty, but they don't over do the sweet sauces and excess ""fancier"" stuff that hides the taste of a good sushi roll.I have had a variety of experiences with the service. Only once was it bad, (and I never saw that particular waitress again) and most of the time it was good to excellent. The chefs have been friendly and personable, and I really did enjoy the experience. more

Eh..Not worth the money 2/11/2009

I went in for dinner the other night with a few of my friends, and i have to say it was not that great. I ordered Filet costing me about $25.00, but i figured that it would be good. My family came in a couple of time before and they said it was a nice place. But when i ate there, the only thing good was the seasoning that they used. Most places put teriyaki sauce on everything, but this place doesnt, which was why i liked it..other than that my filet tasted like it was old. I mean if i was gonna spend money on a filet, than i was thinking it was gonna taste good. This place is not all its cracked up to be. I would not recommend it at all. Pros: drinks were kept refilled Cons: food quality more

Quite Bad 11/12/2008

I tried Toyama for the first and last time in mid October 2008. I came in with a group of about 9 others and we chose to eat at a grill table. The decor is old and and dusty. The restaurant is dark and depressing. Tables were greasy and the condiments were covered in sauces, dust and who knows what else. I'd have walked out but I was a guest of new friends. The food itself was cooked at our table but very slowly. We had to wait 15 minutes for initial service and we were there right after they'd opened and were the only customers in the restaurant. Most of our orders were just plain wrong. We got wrong appetizers, entrees and drinks. The food arrived slowly and there was much delay (20 minutes) in serving time from entree #1 to entree #9). The scallops I had were extremely overcooked and rubbery and the food had so much MSG my tongue became numb. I've never had this problem at any other asian restaurant. I know I have no shellfish allergy., so I assume this was the cause. Service overall just seemed disinterested and put out to have to serve us. The food portions were moderate, yet quite expensive for what we received. Everyone who worked there that day appeared to be in or just out of high school with no adults supervising. Maybe that's due to it being a Sunday but it still seemed strange. I have no idea how this low quality place stays open especially since it is hidden behind a Publix grocery store. I would fully recommend avoiding Toyama. Hope this helps. Pros: no wait Cons: Very dirty, bad food, bad service more

Sad but this place has gone downhill 3/22/2008

My husband and I used to really enjoy eating at Toyama. But the last few times have been just terrible! There are about 15 kids that work there all walking around not doing anything. It took at least 20 minutes for someone to get our drink order. We were about to walk out, but we needed to be somewhere and were starving. The table cloths have been dirty, when you go reach for the soy sauce there is a thick nasty sticky film all over the soy bottles, and the tray they sit on is dirty and pretty gross. Our sushi sat ready for our waitress to bring over to us for at least 15 minutes. My husband finally had to get up and bring it to our table. So sad this place was really nice in the beginning, but something has really changed... hopefully they can get it together again in the meantime they have lost us as customers. Pros: Convenient Cons: Horrible service, dirty tables more
