Sooo goood! 9/8/2010

I may not be Japanese, but I know good sushi when I taste it. I have been to over 20 different Japanese/sushi restaurants in RI, MA, NJ, and NY and Tokyo is still one of my favorites. I love sushi and I love Tokyo. The waitstaff are friendly and accomadating. The prices are great and the atmosphere is pleasant. The fact that Tokyo is byob is also a definite plus! I don't care what anyone else says, Tokyo is absolutely yummy! If you think Tokyo sushi is tasteless you must not have tastebuds! I recommend Tokyo to everyone who loves sushi or wants to try it. more

Awesome sushi 3/15/2009

A great family owned place. I love their sushi. You can call with a reservation, but they don't really hold it, and they're very use to large crowds just walking in (since there's two major colleges, Brown and RISD, right down the road and it's an art district.) The food s excellent - the owners are from Japan and rarely close the shop to return to Japan and visit . Their shop interior itself isn't exciting, taking a stroll down Wickenden after the meal is fun. Parking can get difficult during busy hours and is street-side - carpool if there's going to be a large group. Also, when they get busy (usually mid-late nights), prepare to wait a while. They also have a tatami room, but it's very hard to get into and you will most likely need a reservation for it. Don't bother trying to go on Friday or Saturday nights. It's packed with locals and you'll wait forever and ruin the experience. I was originally introduced to this place by a two friends, one another local like myself and a Shinto priest I work for. It's a great place and a good way for tourists to hang with locals. Pros: Excellent food, location's fun. BYOB. Pricing's not bad. Cons: When they get busy, prepare to wait. Parking's streetside. more

best sushi in R.I. 9/9/2008

i've been eating sushi for nearly a decade now, and have had it in many different places around the country. the sushi at tokyo is always fresh and delicious, and at times is some of the best i've ever had.\r \r pros: reasonable (but by no means ""cheap"") prices, which are better than many other local places, their BYOB policy (there's an excellent wine shop around the corner) and, of course, their excellent sushi. their staff is very nice as well.\r \r cons: their service can be nothing short of intolerable on friday and saturday nights when they're slammed. i recommend going for lunch any day, or dinner on the quiet nights. skip the rush nights, because the place is packed and your experience will suffer as a result.\r \r all things considered, this is likely the best sushi you're going to find in R.I. more

Excellent place 6/30/2008

Tokyo is excellent. The wait staff is very nice as well as the area. I am a BIG sushi fan and have had it from all around. I can honestly say that they are one of the best Japanese establishments in Providence and in Boston. Thats why I come once or twice a week :)\r \r Try the Boston roll!! Pros: Sushi, Food, service, price Cons: large groups of annoying drunk girls on Friday and Saturday nights more

Who would've though 6/21/2005

I was told about this small little sushi place about 6 months ago and haven't stopped going since. The number of options grows daily and everything about the fish and food is great. Another bonus is it's BYOB, which leaves you with a little extra in the pocket when you leave. Prices are very reasonable and I find service to be what's expected in most restaurants. more

Don't know what they're talking about 6/13/2004

Tokyo is a decent value with tasty Japanese food. The two negative reviews of the restaurant are totally uninformed. I lived in Japan for three years, and have eaten sushi in Hawaii and California. Tokyo's food is on a par with most Japanese restaurants on the East Coast. The reviewer is wrong who claimed that the restaurant's yakisoba was not authentic because it contained udon noodles. Yakisoba is made with chinese style (Ramen) buckwheat noodles, the version served at Tokyo. Both negative reviews criticized the sushi, a rice dish where the rice is cooked with sushi vinegar. I have never found Tokyo's sushi rice dry, but always flavorful. The norimaki (rolls), nigiri and temaki (handrolls) are very good sushi, and the raw fish in the shashimi and sushi I have had at Tokyo has always been fresh and prepared properly. The BYOB policy of Tokyo is also a plus. Pros: sushi quality, ambiance, value more

for those who dont know any better 5/31/2004

this is the kind of restaurant for people who dont know how real japanese food is supposed to be. the sushi rice is dry not sticky like it should be. the sushi is just plain BAD. its obvious that anyone who recomends this restaurant, has never been to a different japanese place. this is a place for those people who are obsessed with anime and eat sushi for the sole reason of wanting to be japanese. Pros: safe neighborhood Cons: , east side kids more

Can't get enough of it! 3/11/2004

Tokyo Restaurant has the best sushi. Not only is the sushi tasteful and satisfying, the prices are far below that of other restaurants. I've eaten there numerous times and continue to be pleased with their exceptional service and Delicious Sushi! Im from Connecticut, and when I want to eat Japanese, I go to Tokyo Restaurant in Providence. The drive is two hours, but the satisfaction is priceless. If you're new to sushi, this restaurant will satisfy your new curiosity for Japanese food, with understanding that it comes with a warning: ""Caution, Sushi Is Extremely Addicting Here!"" And for sushi lovers who already know the gratification of satisfying your taste buds, you know that Tokyo Restaurant will continue to provide you with the best sushi and excellent service every time you eat there. Check it out, but be prepared to wait, because it's always busy. Wait that must mean something....hmm? Pros: Excellent Sushi, Service, Inexpensive more

Great find 2/11/2004

Great food, fabulous service(!), prices are excellent - especially for japanese food. Ambiance is 'neutral', could be better, but not a negative. Food and service carry the business. The only strange thing is that it's ""BYOB"" and they charge a small amount for an empty glass / wine opener. On the other hand, doesn't this mean you can bring you favorite beverage? more

Fabulous!!! 11/5/2003

I love this restaurant! The food is wonderful. They have such a huge selection, whether you are a sushi eater, meat eater or a vegetarian. You will find something that you love! The eggplant appetizer and yaki soba spicy vegetable are two of my favorites. My husband will always get their VERY fresh sushi- he has been to many sushi restaurants and will say that hands down, this is one of the best around. The only thing that detracts from the restaurant is how crowded it becomes while Brown is in session. But I guess that only proves how great this place is- I have never been there when there hasnt been an almost, if not full room. If you do have to wait for a table, I guarantee that you will not be sorry. Pros: reasonably priced, excellent food, wide variety Cons: no parking lot, crowded, sometimes a wait more

Worst Japanese Food I Have Ever Eaten 8/11/2002

Quite simply the worst Japanese food I and my wife (who is Japanese) have ever eaten. The sushi rice was flavorless -- so much so that we wondered if the chef even knew how to prepare it. Our yaki soba was, in fact, yaki udon, which is a completely different kind of noodle. It is akin to asking for angel hair pasta and receiving linguini. Now, I have never returned food to the kitchen before in my life. I am not a picky or snobby eater. However, this restaurant is not run by Japanese people and it shows. It is simply not good Japanese food. So, if you have never had Japanese food and want to try something new, give this place a try. If, on the other hand, you know anything at all about Japanese food, STAY AWAY. It was inedible. Pros: Cozy atmosphere Cons: Inedible food, Poorly trained chef, Not authentic food more
