Everything Was Great 3/13/2011

I have to admit it.\r I really like their wedge. I think I could go and have their clam chowder and wedge and leave a happy person without ever touching steak.\r \r That's not to say the steak isn't just spectacular and filling, it's flat out wonderful and worth every penny if you want a special night.\r \r Now that I've written this, I think I will go back and get \r just the soup and wedge. Yum! more

Above and Beyond!!! 2/13/2011

I was completely blown away by the food and service at The Capital Grille last night!!! When my husband I walked in my first thought was maybe we should not have come on such a busy night. We were warmly greeted and promptly checked in. We had to wait a few minutes for our table which was fine because we got to enjoy a cocktail at the bar. Once we were seated the server was friendly and professional. This was our first visit so we had many questions and as busy as they were he took the time to explain the menu in detail and answer all of our questions. He suggested we start with the Pan Fried Calamari the signature dish. It was a delightful surprise. The peppers and garlic butter it was tossed in enhanced the flavor of the calamari without over powering it. We split a Wedge salad and I had a lobster and my husband had the filet. The server insisted we have the lobster mac & Cheese (too die for) and we also had the mushrooms. We split a slice of cheese cake and the end. All of the food was amazing served hot and fresh! But what sealed the deal was the way they went above and beyond on such a busy night. The manager checked on us twice and I was given a beautiful long stem red rose, they took a picture of us printed it and put it in a cute paper frame and they gave us a little valentines bag with cookies! I had the cookies for breakfast this morning and they were just as wonderful as the meal last night! We can not wait to go back! The Capital Grille was a wonderful experience!! more

Fine Dining Enthusiast 2/13/2011

For anyone who enjoys fining dining with superb personal service, a beautiful restaurant, outstanding wine selection, and delectable cuisine, then The Capital Grille should be the place for you! \r \r My husband and I dined at The Capital Grille last night as a Valentine's celebration and what an incredible choice. The impressive service started with the valets and never ended. The staff was personable, warm, and showed such enthusiasm for catering to our needs. They truly seem to love what they do which gives the entire restaurant such personality. The food was impeccable! My husband's kona crusted sirloin held immense flavor. I greatly enjoyed the Oscar topped filet which is by far the best I have ever enjoyed in the city. The lobster mac and cheese is to die for! We finished the evening with an outstanding coconut cream pie.\r \r Our experience at The Captial Grille was beyond our expectations. To make our Valentine's Day celebration even more memorable, our photo was taken and presented to us for a keepsake as well as a beautiful long stem red rose, and a elegantly arranged bag of cookies to take home . What restaurant does this!!!!!\r \r My husband and I can not wait to return again and again. Thank you Capital Grille for a wonderful, memorable, dining experience. more

Great Meal and Service! 11/1/2010

Just had our first visit to Capital Grille a few nights ago and it was all the things we hope for in a fine dining experience. Excellent steaks, amazing king crab, and some unusual but very tasty side dishes in an elegant but not pretentious atmosphere. Our server Jessica was top notch and made us feel comfortable with the extensive wine list and menu. It was our first visit but certainly won't be our last. more

Magnificent Valentines 10/23/2010

A while ago I wrote to Steve Joest, Managing Partner at Capitol Grille, that it would be nice to have equally attractive nonalcoholic beverages (EANABs) available When we arrived Seth Dehotels, our server, presented us with a delightful chilled sparkling apple juice, sent by Steve. The night unfolded as a sophisticated Valentines Dinner like we have never had before. Steve sent an appetizer that I do not think is on the menu, of crabcakes (the best I have had), prosciutto encrusted cheese and Alaskan crab. It was a wonderful surprise, and magnificently prepared and presented. We then had our dinner of a tasty Caeser salad with whole anchovies, lobster bisque that was creamy and delightful with large chunks of lobster. Out main course was a porterhouse done to perfection and a filet mignon with lobster that was astounding. Sides were lobster mac-and-cheese, asparagus and truffle fries. All were at the appropriate temperatures and wonderful flavor. Yes, we intentionally overordered so we would have lunch tomorrow (Valentine's Day) as a romantinc reminderof our dinner. We intended to skip dessert, but Seth explained the blackberry sorbet was freshly made, so we went for it. it was an incredible experience. As we were preparing to leave, Seth presented a satchel of cookies for Valerie, and very nice touch. The service by Seth was impeccable, the dinner exquisite, and the experience could not have been better for a very romantic Valentine's Dinner. Capitol Grille is our favorite restaurant, and we appreciate the special effort Steve Joest made to ensure a perfect experience. Thank you Steve and thank you, Seth, and all the others that made this such a wonderful evening. more

Great food, mediocre service 8/29/2010

I made reservations to eat at Capital Grille for the first time last night in honor of my son's 17th birthday as well to be able to take advantage of the extension of Houston Restaurant Week. The reservationist asked if we were celebrating a special occasion- which I informed her we were. Long story short, there were high and low points to our first visit with them:\r \r High points: \r 1) The ambiance is very elegant and the decor classic. 2) The kona crusted sirloin was cooked to perfection and very tasty, Sam's mashed potatoes were creamy and well seasoned and the creamed spinach was surprisingly very good. \r \r Low points:\r 1) Our waiter, Terry was not at all personable. He didn't feel the need to introduce himself to us, and was so nonchalant that until he returned to take our order, we thought he was only there to deliver the bread and fill the water glasses. Once we saw that he was indeed our server, I asked him for his name. We found ourselves envious of the excellent service that surrounding tables were receiving from their servers. \r 2) The clam chowder tasted exactly like the canned Campbell's version\r 3)The creme brulee was average at best. It was a bit too thick for our tastes. The version at Perry's Steakhouse is much better!\r 4) Our special occasion was never acknowledged. Not that I expected the servers to gather and present a rendition of ""Happy Birthday"", however, it still would have been nice for them to acknowledge the celebration in some way. \r \r All in all, we were pleased with the food, especially for the price. \r \r more

Excellent service and good food 7/5/2010

The service is absolutely excellent. The waiter goes above and beyond to anticipate what you want. Oysters from NE were fresh and good. Aged steak was good but not outstanding - not to the quality I would expect from the place which specializes in aged steaks. Overall I enjoyed the experience and will probably go back again for a nice pleasant atmosphere and nice food. Pros: service Cons: price more

Wonderful Birthday Celebration 7/3/2010

Capitol Grill near the Galleria, truly made my birthday celebration a memorable celebration. Our waiter was attentive but did not rush us. The special details such as the rose, the photo developed and given to us during dinner was a nice touch but....\r The steaks were excellent, juicy and cooked to perfection. The lobster mac n cheese was to die for. My husbands lobster bisque was creamy and filled with lobster pieces and the caesar salad was yummy. If that wasn't enough the creme brulee served with a candle for my dessert was delicious. We were so delighted with our experience and definitely will return soon. I waited way too long to come in for dinner this time. Pros: Excellent Service, Delicious Food more

Disappointing 6/22/2010

We hadn't been to The Capital Grille for years, and went for a birthday celebration with guests from out of town. My elderly mother and I are not big eaters, and I know the portions are substantial. I think it was when we split our appetizer that our waiter lost interest in our table. The rest of the evening went downhill from there. When we ordered a bottle of wine for two of us, he misunderstood and served two half glasses. It was unbelievable, and actually embarrassing. I think the sharing of an appetizer gave him the impression that we would not be big spenders. There were too many really offensive mistakes to write about. Pros: Food was fine Cons: Service more

One of the best 5/8/2010

My husband and I went to dinner here a couple nights ago for the second time and it was just as memorable as the first. They definitely know how to treat their customers special. I had decided to make a reservation for our dinner that night being that this place gets pretty busy even on a weekday. When we were seated, we were delighted to see that they had dressed up our table with pink rose petals. It really set the mood for our night. Everything we put in our mouth was so amazing. The Lobster and Crab Cakes were mouthwatering. I ordered the Veal Chop Milanese and it was so delish. It was a flattened veal chop, breaded in panko bread crumbs and fried to a golden brown. They accompanied it with arugula and grape tomatoes, which complemented the crusted meat well. We ended the wonderful dinner with the Creme Brulee. It was the best Creme Brulee I have ever tasted! It was rich and creamy but not overly sweetened. \r I recommend The Capital Grille to anyone who wants top notch customer service and a quality dining experience.\r Pros: Everything! Cons: Nothing more

worth the money and great food 2/14/2010

low-lighting great for private dinner. the best steak we had and we had visit already Palm, Pappas Steakhouse , Perry's Steakhouse and Mark's American Cuisine. By far the best from all of these- try the Filet Oscar... best of both worlds juicy steak top with Crab meat plus creme....Also the best mashed potatoes ever tasted.\r my fiance had Dry-aged Porterhouse - season perfect and my bother-in-law had the steak Delmonica - great juicy with a flavor like no other.\r I tried all steak but my favorite is Filet Oscar- thinking of having it at our wedding reception as main entree. Pros: best steak in houston - FACT more

Great dining! 9/28/2009

Capital Grille is great. My wife & I had an anniversary dinner (away from the kids) and we could not have asked for a more enjoyable experience. The staff was top notch! I would recommend Capital Grille to others however they need to be prepared for the price. Very comparable to other high end restaurants but know going in that it will cost. more

Better than average 7/3/2009

First of all let me say that the service and ambiance at Capital Grille is fantastic. The waiters truly go above and beyond to meet your every need. It doesn't matter if you are there for once a year romantic dinner, a regular who eats there once a week or dining customers for a business dinner. The restaurant itself has this era gone by charm. It's filled with beautiful painings and low lighting that make you feel like you are eating in an elegant home instead of a restaurant. \r I have eaten at Capital Grille a few times in the last year and each time I tell people, to their dismay, that the food is just ok. The seafood is very fresh and well presented. The side dishes are all delicious, especially the lobster mac and cheese. The desserts are very plentiful but mediocre. And the steaks.....are just average. The meat is good quality and well prepared; it is the flavor that is lacking. I have had a better steak from the grill in my backyard. I'm not sure why the meat lacks flavor but I would rather not pay $40 a steak again to try and see if it has improved. \r \r There are other places here in Houston that have better food without the big dent on your wallet. Pros: Service is phenomenal Cons: Food could be better more

Met and exceeded my high expectations 2/15/2009

I've lived in Houston all my life and had yet to try Capital Grille. My lovely bf thought that Vday 09 would be a great chance for both of us to try it out. We went for the 13th to try and cut down on the crowds a teeny bit. We got lucky and snagged a parking space without valet. The restaurant was packed to the gills. We were seated within 5 minutes of our reservation time and greeted by our very pleasant and knowledgeable server Rene. The wine list is extensive with choices in various price ranges. We chose an easy drinking cab and proceeded to go over the menu. Here's what we had:\r \r Shrimp cocktail - 5 large, fresh, dense meat shrimp served on ice with a mild cocktail sauce\r \r Filet and butter poached lobster - melt in your mouth filet, paired with tender lobster claw meat over soft mashed potatoes\r \r Kona crusted dry aged sirloin with roasted shallot butter - a flavorful crust of ground Kona coffee, something different and delicious\r \r Parmesan truffle fries - like McD's on steroids! Crispy fries with salty parmesan cheese and promninent but not overpowering earthiness of truffle\r \r Roasted seasonal mushrooms - cremini, portobello, shitake, and oyster mushrooms in rosemary-thyme-garlic butter\r \r Cheesecake with fresh berries - a great, not too dense, not too sweet cheesecake with strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries\r \r What a fantastic meal we had! The service was attentive without being intrusive. We will definitely be back again soon! Pros: Steak! (all the food really), location, service more

Best Lobster Mac and Cheese. Friendly Staff. 1/31/2009

I just discovered Capital Grille this summer in D.C... we were at the Capital Grille at the Capitol. And so I had to try the Houston location because I couldn't stop thinking about the LOBSTER Mac N Cheese. Yeah, Lobster! It sounds weird, at least it did to me, but it is the absolute best. It's a side dish. The cheese is a high quality combo of a few different cheeses and the lobster is soft and tender--PERFECTION. We went there for drinks and apps before a big dinner party in midtown. There was four of us, we had three beers, an amaretto sour, two orders of Lobster mac n cheese, and the onion rings. The onion rings were very tasty and the batter was crispy, almost like big flakes of panko Japanese bread crumbs, light, airy, crunchy. The bar staff was super nice. They set up a table cloth on our table since we were eating. Half the part was pretty casual, but they treated us very nicely nonetheless. They block A LOT of spaces for valet so you may need to walk across the parking lot if you want to park yourself. Great food, great service. We will be back. You should check them out! Pros: Lobster Mac N Cheese, onion rings, service Cons: too many spaces blocked for valet more

superb sirloin and well stocked wine cellar 11/4/2008

I couldn't resist the blue-point oysters which were marvelous, cold, salty .....I had a dozen. Not cheap but very very good. The wine list is super. A wide variety of American reds and whites in a range of prices. The rest of the world selection is not vast but there are many solid choices. \r The dry aged sirloin was certainly the best steak I've had in recent memory. Prepared medium rare....it was tasty to the last bite. Service was just right...attentive, not rushed, a real pleasure. I look forward to a return visit. Pros: steak Cons: some noisy people more

Remarkable! 8/19/2008

Thanks to you folks at the Capital Grille for a delightful experience. My first visit (lured in by your participation in the End Hunger Benefit) and I pray, not the last. The food out of your kitchen is mouth-watering; I loved the Creme Brulee, best in town I believe. Great choices on the wine list. Lastly, but above all, you've recruited spectacular servers; from the moment one enters your establishment, all were cordial, jovial, knowledgeable and PERFECTLY attentive. Indisputably, first class, keep it up! Pros: All-encompassing fine dining. Some places in town could learn a thing or two... Cons: If you are concerned about value - Expect quality, Not quantity. more

Benchmark for Restaurants! 5/29/2008

Wow!!! Now this is a place to go! The service is first class and the food is spectacular! The kind of place that you would go on a special occasion or if you just want to treat yourself. Bring your walet though! But WELL WORTH! Keep up the great work guys! Pros: These guys have got customer service figured out. Thank You! Cons: wish it was a little less pricey. more

Terrific experience!!!! 3/1/2008

I visited this restaurant for the first time last weekend after hearing rave reviews. I must say the hype is true. Every detail from start to finish was executed perfectly. The porterhouse is a dry aged in house and was the best I have ever had. The service was professional but not stuffy allowing my date and I to have a great night. Highly recommended! Pros: Great food, professional and fun service, great bartenders more
