Customer Service...Hello? 7/16/2010

Isnt the point of booking a reservation ""in advance"", suppose to gurantee you something? Oh , like maybe ""where you want to sit?"" But no, cant to that. Threy wont gurantee you a spot outside by the water because, now get this...""they might get a large wedding party request"", so then you are chop liver.\r \r So I am taking my small party of 8 and my dinner bill average of $300 bucks elsewhere. And when they call to confirm my present booking, I will say, ""oh sorry, I cant gurantee I will show up!"". Pros: Great location on the water Cons: No gurantees more

Can The Cannery That Can't... 10/24/2009

Can't get it right or treat you right that is. After selecting the Cannery for a special treat with out of town family guests, we were sorely dissappointed. Lousy seating, poor service and a manager who shouldn't be allowed out in public. We were seated on the patio outside overlooking the picturesque Newport Harbor and the wedding party from hell...or close to there. Noisy, obnoxious, drunk and the restaurant staff should have warned us when we arrived. Instead we were virtually part of the ""party"" that surrounded our table on two sides. After complaining to the staff, our level of service dropped below that of eating alone at home. When we asked to speak to the manager, who was busy serving food to the wedding party (get real), he was patronizing at best and demonstrated incompetence at it's worst. Think twice, okay, three times before spending your money or your patience at this overpriced, understaffed and mediocre establishment. Pros: It's not hell. Cons: Lousy Service and Uncaring Staff more

Horrible service - overcooked loster!! 8/22/2009

The lobster was WAY overcooked. Our service was Way WORSE. We were ignored. Had to ask for everything. Had to ask for water in our glasses that sat empty forever, had to ask to order our entrees, had to ask for more drinks. had to ask for more bread. It really was sad. We were visting from Vegas where we like going out to eat in great restuarants, and the service was SOOO disappointing. Then our Lobster came and we coudl barely scrap it out of the shell it was so overcooked and the steak was really weird tasting too. Would NEVER recommend it! The manager was horrible too!!! Pros: the atmosphere is OK Cons: HORRIBLE SERVICE more

Here is the place to go for fresh fish 7/17/2009

Great view, but that is it! 12/8/2008

\r My husband and I dined at the Cannery on 12/5 with 10 of our closest friends and had the worst experience. We started the night fine having drinks upstairs in the bar enjoying the beautiful view waiting for our group to arrive. When we were sat in the dungeon, that is when the night went downhill. First and foremost the service was horrible. Our server was rude and had no knowledge of their wine list. He was obviously not trained to serve wine by his lack of wine etiquette. The food was also marginal. In fact, 11 out of the 12 of us did not finish our entrees. As a matter of fact, one of the entrees (chilean sea bass) came out frozen! When we finally caught our server's attention, he did not apologize nor make any effort to expedite the replacement (took over 15 minutes). Most of the entrees were either under cooked (obviously the sea bass) or over cooked (their duck dish). After we paid our bill, we spoke to the manager. She was very apologetic, but made no effort or gesture to encourage us to come back again. I have dined in Newport Beach for over 20 years and have had many great experiences and dishes, but Cannery is one that I will not recommend nor visit again. Pros: The view Cons: Service, food more

Master Chef 5/27/2008

The food has the presentation of a Master Chef. Nothing was ordinary, from the salad to the main course, to the dessert. The salad was dressed with sliced fuits that primed the palate. The sea bass was served on a bed of potato mash, and a green sauce that I still dream about. The dessert was 'ice cream sundae meets bananas foster"". The food price for two came to just about 100 dollars, which is far less than expected for the quality of food, not even taking into consideration the locaton and view.\r \r The Pinoir Wine was light and sufficiently dry, but a bit pricey. They allow ""bring your own"" with a 15 dollar uncorking fee. My wife and I look forward to our next OC trip, when we will happily return to another culinary adventure at The Cannery. Pros: Everything. Cons: Cost of wine. more

From Marietta, GA to The Cannery just for dinner 5/22/2008

Each time we come from Marietta to CA, we HAVE to go to the Cannery. The food is marvelous and so well presented. The last time there was 5 of us, each with a different dinner and dessert. Each plate was a work of art in presentation, the service could not have been more attentive, and the price reasonable for what there was.\r The only draw back is the bathrooms. Don't go there when a downpouring rain is happening. Not a pleasant experice but far away from the dining room area.\r We have never felt pushed to leave and usually take about 2 hrs to eat and talk. \r If you have not eaten here, you have missed a treat. \r We will be out there for Fathers Day this year and you can just bet where we will be eating dinner and treating dad. Pros: Ambience, Parking, Service, Food, has it all Cons: bathrooms when it rains more

Great sushi, would be better if you could order it from every table in restaurant 10/29/2007

Great food, great view, service is pretty good. A little annoyed that they gave me a little bit of a hard time ordering sushi from the downstairs. But it came and it was delicious. Pros: great food and view Cons: service could be friendlier more

Great Location and Atmosphere - Food is Uninspired 1/6/2007

It's a classic Orange County location; right on the shore in Newport Beach. The menu is a traditional seafood offering and would be a nice meal just about anywhere else. Unfortunately for the price one pays here, you're getting the beautiful location and not the food. The cuisine is closer to Red Lobster than it is to a fancy expensive restaurant. Go for the view, but don't bring the same expectations for the meal. Pros: Location Cons: Too expensive for what you're eating more

Bring your own snacks 11/15/2006

The Cannery had some good reviews so a friend and I tried it. Nancy the hostess is very sweet. The view is very nice too and makes you feel as though you're away on a small vacation. The service however is very slow and got to the point of annoying. I don't see what the excitement is about the food. It was okay but nothing to write home about. I believe the food could be much better, but the restaurant seems to rely on it's view to keep it's customers. If you don't mind waiting for average food with a great view then this is the place for you. Pros: Definitely the view... Cons: Service, average food, prices more

Not an unpleasent experience 11/12/2006

The baked goat cheese and seared ahi tuna salad was very good. Its portion was not overbearing, and neither was its price. I also ordered oysters on the half-shell, and they were delicious, except for one, which was creamy inside. Perhaps I ordered it during spawning season, but to this day I prefer not to think of what that mush was. Compared to other Pacific Highway, Newport restaurants, which charge for the location and are a dissapointment, I felt that this was fine-dining that was worth the inflated prices. However, it was not so delitefully enjoyable that I feel the need to go back in the near future. more

Quality Food, Great Service, Beautiful Atmosphere 11/3/2006

One of the local hidden gems in Orange County. I frequent the restaurant on a regular basis with friends and family. Sitting outside feeling the ocean breeze, enjoying good food with the people you love is truly priceless. If you go during the day definitely request a patio table outside. more

Best View, Best Food in NB 10/16/2006

One thing you can almost count on is a Great View means so-so food. Well that's not the case with the Cannery! \r The Food is Wonderful and the View is really relaxing. Nice Wine List! Pros: Good Food Cons: Finding it the first time more

Thank you but I'll pass.... 10/5/2006

Sure, the location is beautiful and there is a nice variety of items on the menu. The problem is that everytime I've gone my steak has been overcooked and when I returned it and asked for it medium rare it came back out black and blue (barely seared.) In addition the plate was so hot I burnt my hand on it - literally you could hear the flesh sear when you touched it. At these prices I don't think it's too much to ask to cook something to the right temperature and not punish the guest when you get it wrong. This is a nice restaurant, not a dive restaurant. I also don't enjoy ordering a bottle of wine for $140 and have the waitress tell me ""You must have a lot of money to buy a bottle that expensive."" One it's not that expensive and two I can't think of a better way of making my guest and myself uncomfortable. Tacky, tacky, tacky. more

A must try! 7/2/2006

I recently visited this restaurant for the first time. What a great place! We sat upstairs where we had a view of the boats docked nearby. There was table seating as well as seating available on sofas where you could eat which was great for cozy encounters with someone special or just so you can get crazy with your friends. They have a nice sized wine list if you like that sort of thing. I had sushi on my visit which I noticed was a little more expensive than what I typically see elsewhere. But it won't stop me from going back and trying all the great seafood they had on their menu! Pros: Street parking (when available), view, seating choice of table or sofa Cons: Sushi a little higher in price than used to seeing more

Perfect Seafood, Great View 6/18/2006

WOW! Went for the first time last fri. Everything was tasty. The view is sublime, with lots of Yachts.\r BEST MARGARITA! more

Great place for special night out 3/15/2006

My wife and I love going to new places and The Cannery did not disappoint. We went there for V-Day and had a great time. We had reservations for 7:00 but were told they were running 15 minutes behind. We were seated around 7:45. I guess its to be expected when you go anywhere on V-Day. Regardless, we spent the time at the bar and had some great drinks. I highly recommend the bloody mary's. On to the food. I had the lamb chops and was a bit dissappointed with the portion size, but they were cooked to perfection. My wife had the filet mignon and it would hold its own against any great steak house. The atmosphere is romanticish and great for a first date. more

Fantastic 3/10/2006

The Cannery is a good way to get away from the cheesy restaurants/bars in Newport. It has a good crowd and good atmosphere. more

Fantastic Food on the Water 6/20/2005

The Cannery's quality is far better than any other Waterfront restaurant in NB. The Wine List is large and the selections are a Comb of Fresh Fish and Beef, Salads too! The service is always dependable. more

Could Hold its own in The Bay Area 7/26/2002

Wow. This place is a sleeper. The decor is very nice all the way through to the bathrooms. The manager seems to care and is polite and humble. We had salmon and beef teriyaki. Both were great, the plates were hot and the sauces were great. The decor is very, very cool and I've been to a lot of cool places in NYC and SF. more
