These guys sent a service repairman to take a look at my water heater that stopped working. This was to be a service call as part of my home warranty. I knew all the water heater needed was a new thermocouple. I simply used the internet to diagnose the problem. Hell, I did half the work for them and even told the repairman the likely problem.
So this guy comes over, takes a look at the brand (State Waterheater) and proceeded to tell me that: (1) nobody stocks their parts (2) I would have to order an entire new assembly including gas valve thermostat, igniter button, pilot tube, manifold tube, thermocouple, blah, blah, blah, (3) I would have to order the parts myself because the heater was under warranty (4) that a universal thermocouple would definitely not work with ""this model"" (5) and that, if they installed my ordered parts, they would have to charge more money on top of the service call (in which he informed what he couldn't do anything in addition to all his infinite wisdom about the water heater manufacturer market). When I told him that I'm not paying him for telling me that he can't do anything he said that was fine, he was going to get paid by the warranty company anyway, it was no big deal and that I was still going to have to figure out a way to order and install all those parts. So I took his advice, went to Home Depot after he left with a couple of buddies, bought a $10 thermocouple, installed it, and spent the rest of the evening watch NBA basketball. And my wife and kids are happy as clams to have hot water for showers.
