Nice Little Friendly Neighborhood Bistro 2/24/2010

I am not a big fan of the ambiance. I usually like the intimate vibe of the smaller restaurants. However, the tables at Tapestry were so close together I almost felt like I was having a double date with the couple sitting next to us. That alone made this restaurant a less than 4 stars establishment. The food is a notch down compare to other finer diners at Los Gatos neighborhood and the price reflects this. This is probably not the best choice for a romantic special occasion dinner. It might not be a bad choice for casual night out. Cons: Mediore Food more

great food, service and wine 8/4/2009

Sunday, July 26, 2009, we stopped to eat. The restaurant was empty and we were doubtful but stayed. The waiter was delightful and even when more people arrived, his attention was the same. The food was outstanding, cooked to perfection. The waiter selected a white wine (since we started with Champagne), it was a terrific South African sauvignon blanc. Kudo's to the chef and staff. We will be back. Pros: the best kobe beef tenderloin Cons: summer wasps more

A great little restaurant 12/15/2008

My wife and I have been to this restaurant twice, and both times have been great experiences. The wait staff has been incredibly friendly and helpful. We sat outside the first time, and I was accosted by a bee, who seemed to like their salad as much as I did. The waiter patiently tried to shoo the bee away. The food was excellent. I had a different type of steak each time and they were both prepared very well. The spinach salad could have been a little more interesting as it consisted solely of spinach leaves, tomato slices, and the pancetta vinaigrette, but it still tasted good. The deserts were excellent. I had originally balked at the idea of sour cream apple pie, I am not too fond of sour cream, but I am glad that I took the leap because it was excellent. My wife and I are planning on going back to this restaurant often, it has definitely become our new ""date"" place. I am truly surprised by the number of bad reviews. more

Simply bad! 3/12/2008

This was our first and last time at the ""Tapestry"". The wine is bad, first I tried a Sauvignon Blanc- ick, and after I had a glass of Chardonnay that tasted corky - The waiter took it away and told the manager or owner, I don't know this ignorant guy, but this guy tasted the wine in front of me without saying anything and put it back in the fridge! The food was disgusting, Linguine with a lemon sauce, crab meat, corn, (usually they even add mushrooms, we could just avoid this) it tasted like leftovers just thrown together in the pan, apparently there was no time for grocery shopping. more

Great food and excellent atmosphere 11/15/2007

Eaten at Tapestry twice in the last 4 months or so. Both times a great experience. Food was perfectly prepared, very well presented and the service staff very attentive. The atmosphere is also a great, especially the patio when the weather allows. Highly recommended! more

Excellent food, and you can bring your dog! 10/7/2007

Our experience at Tapestry has always been great. On a recent visit to celebrate our anniversary we were treated as royalty and had a great meal cooked by the chef/owner Gary Messick. The chef's tasting is a great way to go, but the menu always has a great selection of seafood and meat dishes. The staff is friendly and very attentive. They have a Yappy Hour on Wed during the summer, but you can always bring your dog as I always do and sit in a protected area outside. One hint, order the calamari dry with the sauce on the side. Pros: Great food, takes dogs, amazing desserts Cons: needs better wine glasses more

oh please.... 9/6/2007

This is the 2nd time I've had to write a review defending a good local restaurant, because people are just cruel. remember folks, its just dinner. I went here last weekend, and didn't find anything wrong with the food. It was a good experience. The service was top notch, and its a very cute space. People should not be like the tabloids, and spread fear and bad news. Thats George Bush's job. more

Fusion? I call it Confusion. 8/21/2007

We went to Tapestry to our anniversary. That was the 1st anniversary of the last time we'll go there. I appreciate variety as much as the next diner, but this borders on schizo. There were so many culinary genres there that nothing was really great, it was all just mediocre. I think they would be better served sticking to one theme. The ""Yesterday's Soup"" was lentil, and it could have come from a can. The ""grocery cart"" of spring rolls was pretty good, just very greasy. The foie gras was served in a pool of oil. And the skirt steak was ordered medium rare, but arrived medium. On a positive note, the service was great. Our server was very cheerful and attentive, although he knew almost nothing about any dish we asked about. I think this restaurant has potential. But I recommend that the owners/chefs revamp the menu. Focus on quality, not quantity. more

Poor quality all the way around. 7/16/2007

I was disappointed in the food and service at Tapestry, which is a bummer as I like to go to local, less popular restaurants. We decided to go to Tapestry instead of another restaurant bc it ""looked"" cute and the menu contained some interesting items. We ordered the Chef's Special which was much more expensive than the regular menu as it was supposed to comprise of ""special Chef selections."" So, the 1st course consisted of mango, chopped onion and about 1 scallop served in a martini glass. Very bland. The 2nd course was Ahi Tuna that looked and smelled like it had been sitting in the sun all day. We both took one bite and put it aside. The third course was a huge plate of muscles that I don't remember seeing on the menu & looked like they were caught in the foamy shores of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The next ""Chef's Choice"" was a flank steak, which was ok.. It reminded me of the lean cuisine I left at home. The last item was good: a small piece of Filet Mignon on top of Portobello mushrooms, however, the stinky muscle taste still lingered in my mouth so it was really difficult to enjoy. When we asked the waitress why muscles were selected as one of the ""Chef's Special"" choices, and why did the Ahi smell bad, she got very defensive and said that the restaurant was her family's business, and?I swear?she didn?t appreciate that we were complaining about the meal.. She disappeared and then re-appeared with dessert menus that she threw on the table. I asked if I could speak with a manager and after considerable delay, the ""manager-owner,"" who happened to be her father, came to our table and listened to our complaints that were presented, I believe, in a very reasonable manner, and said, ""Oh."" and walked away. If that wasn't enough, I was sick for the entire next day and can't even think about Ahi Tuna without getting nauseous. I would never consider dining at Tapestry again. Pros: Not mainstream. Cons: Very poor food quality, very poor service. more

Simply Put: A Bad Restaurant 12/1/2006

Like another reviewer, I have to say I've been to Tapestry twice. Giving a restaurant more than one chance is important in my opinion. The first time I went to this restaurant, it was right after it opened way back in the late 1990s. The food wasn't terrible by any means, but I wasn't impressed. It was average at best. Considering the prices they were (and still are) charging, I was dissappointed and did not go back for many years. My second visit was just a few days ago. Yes, I decided to give Tapestry another try. They've been around for awhile; so I thought they must be doing something right. Boy was I wrong. Pros: Location--Los Gatos is a great town; Parking--no problem Cons: Poor value; Poor food preparation; very poor food quality (i.e., as in what is purchased for preparation) more

Love the cocktails, appetizers, slightly overpriced 11/16/2006

A little overpriced I will admit, but for a date night or expense account meal it is definitely worth it. The food is inventive, fun and well prepared. more

Fun, Romantic, Delicious! 8/19/2006

I love this place! The food, the wine & cocktails, the service, the astmosphere........yes! Tapestry has it all. I've been dinning here since the opened the doors and am sure it will remain my favorite if and when they are ever closed. I've sent clients there as well and they have always come back with rave reviews. Try dinner at the bar. Same menue, great view of the kitchen and all the action. It's the bomb! Pros: food, wine, decor Cons: parking more

Do not go here!!!!!! 6/5/2003

First I have to say that I have eaten at this place twice before. The first time was a great exprenice, but when I went back the second time. Ahhhhh!!! Okay, I made reservation one week ahead for my girlfriends birthday party for 17 people at 7:00pm. On the day that I got there the host said that they didn't have me down for the date I requested, which really made my mad because I had given them my credit card number to hold the reservation. They did get us sets quick though I'll give them that. One to our meal, it was horrible the food here is over priced for what they give you and the service wasn't that great either. Pros: Parking, Atmosphere Cons: Expensive, Bad Food, Bad Service more

Strange service, poor value 5/2/2003

I've never been to a place where the waiter had to translate the strange descriptions of the menu items for half the menu, and where they ask you if you want a second glass of wine - you say no, and they come with the bottle and top off your half-full glass and charge you for a second full glass (when clearly it was not). Had it not been for my friend who loves the place, I would have debated the bill. The food - I had duck and it was dry. However the red cabbage over goat chees that came with it was good. The dessert - banana fosters came in a martini cup with slices of what seemed to be plain bananas with some carmelized thin sauce and completely melted ice cream. Pros: decor, immediate seating Cons: value, service, menu more
