Money, not customer service, takes priority here 3/13/2006

I brought a guest here on a Saturday night, having reserved a table nearly one week in advance. We had eaten dinner elsewhere and just wanted to order drinks and dessert. AFTER we had been seated and had put in an order for drinks, the manager came to our table to tell us that only people who are ordering entrees can sit at the tables, and told us to give up our table!!! He was essentially saying that only customers who were going to spend a lot of money deserved any respect! It was extraordinarily rude and humiliating. (This policy is ridiculous anyway, because for the short amount of time we would have occupied our table, we would have spent plenty of money to make it worthwhile to serve us.) The Philadelphia restaurant scene has so much to offer--don't waste your business on a pretentious, money-hungry place like Tangerine. Cons: pretentious, bad service more

This place is kind of whack 11/14/2005

The food at Tangerine is not good. Well, it is ok, but with all of the other choices in Phily, there is no need to come here. It is also really expensive. This place is a really good date spot, however, especially if your date doesn't know anything about food. It is a really cool place to hang out, and any girl (or guy) will be really impressed with you for being brought here. Foodies should definitely check out Philly's other offerings before coming here. This place is highly overpriced and they are incapable of handling a large party. We were told to be there sharply on time or would not be seated, and then were made to wait twenty minutes. It's loud and very impersonal, I would not go here for dinner with someone you actually want to talk to. Service is average, food is average and setting is average. This would all be fine if the price was average. If you are looking to have a good time with people you know, I would skip Tangerine, if you are looking to hook up at the bar and have a reason to skip small talk--its for you, just grab a cheese steak next door before you get in. A very enjoyable experience for my birthday. Although some tables are close together, we got there early and requested a more private table. Flavorful mixed greens and dressing make the calimari appetizer a winner. I ordered the snapper, which was fileted by our server, who was polite and offered helpful menu information. Snapper was excellent, additional spices could have livened up the side rice. My girfriend ordered a steak special not on the regular menu. It was rarer than she ordered, but I like it that way and we both thought it was ""Melt in your mouth"" excellent. The sides were very tasty and flavorful. I eat with the best of them and I thought entrees were big enough to share and both our appitites were more than satisfied, not sure about some of the previous comments. Tangerine is one of those places that perfectly blends the quality of the food with the "cool" atmosphere. This is a place you WANT to be with friends sipping cosmos. If you enjoy very good food, beautifully presented in an attractive setting, then this is a place to try. Our shared appetizer of Moroccan barbequed shrimp with onion rings served over a potato-type salad was delicious. The pistachio crusted duck breast with creamy onions and seared foie gras entree, as well as the roasted filet mignon with gorgonzola-shallot potato tart, were delicious. The shared fallen lemon souffle dessert with pistachio brittle was also very good. With 4 drinks, the bill came to $122 before tip. As to the previous reviewer go to a fast food chain if you want to be Super-sized. We had a wonderful meal and certainly did not go home hungry. Restaurants were invented to go to for eating food, right? Well, not this one. I have to say I was impressed by the decor at Tangerine, and the food was all perfectly prepared and was delicious, but the portions are tiny and very expensive. Someone must be laughing all the way to the bank on this place. I'm not a big enough snob to appreciate Tangerine. I'll have to work on that. I'll start off with the good. I have dined at Tangerine at least 4 times I have even brought friends in from hip cities to show off one of Philadelphia's finest dining experiences. I also love the Starr empire of restaurants. I've been to them all!!! However, we were informed on Thursday that our Saturday, June 21, 2003 reservation would have to be confirmed with a $400 credit card CHARGE, not hold. It would be removed once our group of 14 arrived and picked from a price fixed menu of $55/65. I know all about leaving a credit card in the event of cancellation, I was prepared. I was also prepared to order my favorite appetizers and entrees. Needless to say we met, we left and we dropped our dollars at ANJOU that night, a pleasant surprise. Starr is headed in Stein's direction if he keeps this up. Pros: Decor, Bathroom, Location Cons: GROUP CHARGE, Serving Size more

Great special occasion destination! 6/15/2003

I went to Tangerine fearing that it would be all style and no substance. I was deliciously proved wrong. Every single item we ordered was as tasty as could be (absurdly expensive, sure, but it was an expense account meal, so...). And the place is stunningly beautiful. more
