Convenient and quiet for lunch 11/23/2007

Ta-ke Sushi is convenient for the neighborhood residents, and located right in the middle of the Sunset Strip for the visitors. The menu is standard, with some good combinations to make it easy. I'd suggest they get a soda fountain, as canned soda makes refills difficult and inconvenient (who wants to pay for refills?). more

Perfect 'Go-to' Sushi Restaurant 10/9/2007

This restaurant is a favourite. We must go a handful of times per month, always made to feel at home and always receive great service. Closing time is at 11, where as some places wouldn't let you in 30 minutes before closing, the owners are always accomodating to late arrivals.\r Service is usually fast considering the small staff, but the sushi is great for the price. Highly recommended! Pros: relaxing, friendly environment Cons: the sunset crowd that can venture in late in the evening more

Great sushi with amiable staff and patrons 7/22/2007

I live around the corner and I finally decided to check it out. It's a shoe-box shaped space with a handful of 2-top tables, but the sushi bar supports at least a dozen. Two chefs worked the bar including Kino, who I assume is the owner/head chef. His wife was the only waitress and she was really nice. I had a few different rolls such as the Triple Roll and Spider roll. The triple was packed with great fish and the soft shell crab was cooked perfectly. Definitely try the Echigo beer, it's much better than Sopporo or Asahi. Lastly, everyone in there that night was fun, friendly, and not looking to impress anyone with their presence. Pros: Fresh sushi, friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere Cons: Probably not good for large parties more

Good Sushi 6/29/2007

Ta-ke Sushi is a funky little place that serves up good, averaged priced sushi. The service is pretty slow since they only have one waitress. Ta-ke is a great alternative to the overpriced scenester spots... Pros: Good Sushi Cons: Slow Service more

Fantastic fish! 6/10/2007

In the world of sushi-- it all boils down to the freshness and quality of the fish and Take is simply fantastic. It seems that recently sushi places have become mroe about who's who and image and less about good sushi. Take is a rare gem. The quality vs the food value is excellent as I have spent much more for much less at other resturants. The peoiple who work their are all friendly and you can tell really want you to have a good experience. The staples were all excellent -- spicy tuna, hamachi, albacore and fresh water eel, and some of the best uni I have ever had. From the kitchen try the buta stir fried with kim chi and the stuffed mushrooms. Take is a old fashion sushi bar with none of the bling of Koi but thats not why you come to a place like Take-- you come here becasue you love great sushi. more

Good Sushi 1/28/2007

Great Sushi for below average prices. I like the simplicity of the food. The rolls are simple and tasty. more

Great Sushi - Great Service 8/25/2006

I work near by and so far I've been to this restaurant three times. The atmosphere is cozy, the sushi chef is always willing to make special order, and the food is great! Pros: food, sashimi, service Cons: parking more

Best Sushi I've Had 7/10/2006

This place has the tastiest sushi I've eaten. A cozy intimate atmosphere with most of the seating at the bar, the decor is just fantastic, an ideal setting for a delicious sushi meal. Pros: Ambience, Fantastic Food, Friendly Chef Cons: Limited Seating more

OMAKASE is ICHIBAN! 6/15/2006

I love this secret, sushi house on the Sunset Strip. It ain't like the rest. Not Koi, nor Katana. A lot more down to earth and definitely Japanese! It's all about traditional recipes in this house. The master Chef Kino is usually pretty busy going back and forth, from sushi bar to kitchen, preparing for the OMAKASE courses customers ask for. This chef prepares authentic, delicious dishes from different sashimi to cooked. Authenticity is the key word. You might want to use a simpler word. ""Something Unique Kino"" ""Very Japanese"" - That's what I always say and boy, am I always surprised. This place is a true Sushi House with true recipes. If Kino isn't too busy, you might get an interesting story out of him. He's great! It is a small bar and patience is the keyword. Good to relax in! Have fun! more

Friendly service and a great lunch spot 6/7/2006

This new sushi spot is clean, has friendly service, and is a decent value, given it's location on Sunset Blvd. I would stick with the lunch box special. Pros: Friendly service, small and intimate, clean Cons: No parking more

SUBLIME 4/1/2006

I've been everywhere searching for the best sushi in LA, and I mean everywhere. This is it. The quality of fish is perfect - no soy, ponzu, wasabi needed. The service is perfect - attentive but not obnoxious. The chefs are so talented and sweet. The atmosphere is charming. The prices are fair. The parking is free, people, on the Sunset Strip. Do you need any other reasons? Pros: perfect fish, GREAT SERVICE, great parking more

The Best Sushi In LA 2/6/2006

This place is a hole in the wall but the freshest sushi. The chef Kino is amazing. Very authentic. Try the tuna sashimi with ponzu and jalepeno. The yellowtail melts in your mouth. I have tried all the trendy places, Koi, Katana , Sushi Roku --- nothing compares to this! more

One Authentic Sushi Bar! 1/23/2006

Having lived in Tokyo for a very long time, I know their sushi bars. Boy, this place is Japan! Kinda feels like the small sushi bar in Tokyo you walk into from the busy side street. Bar is a little bit bigger though. Really great food here! We're talking true authentic Japanese dishes. But, make sure to ask for the ""OMAKASE"". That's trusting the chef to pull out what he recommends for the evening. Head Chef Kinosan is fantastic. Truly will bring the best of the best when it comes to his dishes. Chef Kino gets the best Uni there is. Actually cracked open the spiked shell right in front of me! If you want true Japan, authentic and traditional, check this place out. Usually pretty busy. Try the RSVP. It could help. Have fun! Pros: Excellent Food!, Authentic, Japan Feel more

Where else can you go for sushi in LA? 12/10/2005

This is the restaurant I have known for over 14 years. I came from Japan and can't go any place else, very small place but cozy and nice. The chef Kino is wonderful and Manager Yayoi she is very nice. The fish is very fresh and tasty. You can be wrong this place. So next time you are in that area try it. more

As close to Japan as it gets! 9/15/2005

You definitely feel like you are in a small sushi bar in Tokyo. You will find yourself eating several unique and authentic Japanese dishes that you normally would not find in other sushi bars in L.A. Ask Master Chef Kino for his recommendations for the evening and he will give you dishes that reflect his home town in Shizuoka. Pure Japan. So fresh! A night at this sushi bar is a night to remember! Good to reserve a spot at the sushi bar by calling in advance. more

Wow 8/5/2005

Fantastic fresh sushi in an authentic environment. I'd eat here every night if I could. more

FANTASTIC hole-in-the-wall sushi 6/13/2005

If you're looking for a small sushi spot with excellent fish and don't want the scene of other WeHo sushi hotspots, Ta-ke is the place for you! The fish is amazingly fresh, the atmosphere is intimate and also fun at the same time. Feel free to ask the sushi chef to make a special roll for you, he will exceed your expectations! DELICIOUS!!! Pros: very very fresh fish, intimate setting, fun sushi chefs more

Delicious 4/12/2005

The place is tiny and intimate but great. The food was so fresh. It was excellent. The only problem was you have to wait a long time for it. They stress on both menus that everything is made to order. The quote is, ""Please give us time and patience."" It felt like forever when we got our food but it was worth it. We ended up having a fabulous dinner. I would definitely give this little gem a try. It is worth the wait. Pros: food, ambiance Cons: long wait 4 food more

Friendly & unpretentious oasis 5/14/2004

In the heart of the very snooty Sunset Strip is a small friendly place that serves great sushi. Chef Nobu and his wife Mama-san are gracious and charming hosts. Be prepared: the room is small, seating is tight and the place is usually pretty busy. Ordering sushi off the menu is good, but for a great experience, sit at the bar and ask Nobu to give you whatever he thinks you need. You'll get all the stuff you wouldn't normally order and everything is VERY unique and speacial. The ""off the menu"" experience isn't cheap (last time I went I paid $120 for 2), but you would pay a lot more for the same experience at Matsuhisu and it is really worth it. You can pay the same for a boat of ordinary sushi somewhere else. Parking is tight, they have a free lot behind (enter on San Vicente Blvd). Pros: Unique, Yummy, Friendly Cons: , Parking more

Beginner's Luck 7/25/2002

It was only my 2nd time in LA, and my first down the strip. Friend and I were hanging in the city on a Saturday evening after attending a wedding the previous day in Long Beach. Wanted sushi, grabbed an open parking spot on the right side of the street. Take-Sushi just a few metres from the spot, looked all right. Very cosy, warm atmosphere. I speak a bit of Japanese, and hit it off with ""mama-san"" manager. Beer was very very cold, perfect for a hot July. We ordered basics - maguro sashimi, unagi, anago, sake, california roll, hamachi (or kampachi). All items were absoulutely first rate. The maguro sashimi, served on ice, was the best I have had (and I like my tuna). It was so creamy in texture, I had trouble believing it was maguro. more
