good food good service 4/9/2006

Not quite sure what francesfr is talking about in their review, but I think they might be the type to complain that its too sunny outside. anyway, I found the service here to be very good. We were served quickly and never had to wait long between plates. between the two of us we shared 6 plates and I found the servings to be of adequate size. We sat on the patio where there were several tables. The view isnt the greatest but when I want a view I'll go see the Grand Canyon. I would definitely make a return trip here to try some of the other plates. Pros: service more

Unacceptable 8/27/2005

We were a table of 5 and each of us was disappointed with the food, service and ambience. Service is random, slow and rude. NOTE: servers should never complain about customers in ear shot of other customers, especially within the one's they're serving. Mojitos looked and tasted bad. Beers were not very cold. Staff explained about a/c problems. Does that affect fridges? Margaritas- frozen & on rocks, and Sangria are OK. Jalea is nothing more than fried calamari. The ceviche sauce had great flavor, but not the fish. Both steak dishes were bland. Yucca fries not thoroughly cooked. The churros were dry. We sat on the unappealing patio and had 2 blowing fans moving back and forth and throwing our hair onto our heads and faces. This was a bit uncomfortable. Unless management makes some changes we feel this restaurant is a waste of time and money and is unacceptable. Pros: unique location, artsy Cons: food, service, ambience/small more

MMM....gracias! 8/11/2005

I am from Peru and I have to say I really love this restaurant. The ambience is great - very cozy and romantic, and I thought the food was also great. It is tapas, so the portions are small, but everything I've had there has been very tasty and authentic. more

Disappointing! 1/9/2005

I dined at Sweet Devil Moon about 2 years ago and had a wonderful time. So I was looking forward to eating there again, but this time it was very disappointing. The food was just okay, but the service was horrible. It took over an hour for all our tapas to come out and one dish never showed up. The portions were so small - I feel like we all left hungry! We talked about ordering more, but didn't want to wait over 30 minutes for our food to show up. Pros: ambiance Cons: , portion, value more

Simply Delightful 7/15/2003

We sat outside on the patio with the fountain and enjoyed two delicious ceviche, paella, the grape leaves, all excellent. And the service was great! I'd go back in a heartbeat. Pros: ambience, food more

Decent Food, Terrible Service 12/9/2002

I love to dine out, especially at cute, ethnic restaurants...however, I will ever go back to SDM! The food was ok, nothing to brag about. I have been to Peru and I would not call this place as good as the real thing. The desserts were horrible! Ok, now for the reason I chose to write a review...the service was horrific. I have never been insulted by a restaurant owner in my life. The owner of SDM actually came over to our table to argue with us about our order!! It was completely unacceptable - we sould have left at that moment, but both our waiter and the owner's wife immediately came over to apologize for his behavior. Afterwards, we felt so uncomfortable, it made the experience a definite downer! He needs to learn the basic rules of marketing - you NEVER argue or insult your customers!! Pros: Cute place, Ethnic cuisine, Some good tapas Cons: Dessert, the Owner, out of the way more

newwaver 11/26/2002

Having been several times before ,but hadn't been back in a while .I was happy to see a new menu ,overdue and worth the wait .The tequila mussels and added ceviches were awesome ,I will say in the past portions can be a bit IFY but not this time...and lots of new wines! I'll be back! Pros: new menu, new wine bar Cons: service, portions more

Good mojitos, but only ok food 10/23/2002

Portions were quite small, even for tapas, and the quality was ok, but nothing to write home about. Fun atmosphere (maybe it was the tasty mojitos) but noisy and music too loud. Pros: Good drinks, Parking Cons: So-so food, Loud music more

great Tapas in a small cozy place 10/14/2002

The fare is billed as Peruvian tapas and everything was very good. Ceviche was great and it was a first timer for me, as I never liked the thought of cold fish. . Also top notch were the Grape Leaf rolls, perfectly marinated & seasoned pork medallions, and humus (another first for me). I couldn't make out what the pork was marinated in, but it seemed that soy sauce was the most distinctive. Fried plantains were barely warm and that was the only complaint but the green dipping sauce was good and very hot. Total bill for 6 tapas and 2 Peruvian beers was $32, a very good deal. I will definitely be back to this place. Service was OK but the two waiters were very busy, so I can deal with that. Our waiter forgot to bring water when requested but he still got his 20%. more

Great food... 8/27/2002

We went there for the food because we had heard really good things about this place...we were not disappointed. In fact they had a cool little bar that just opened up and that was a cool little bonus. This place is a real trreat! Pros: tapas, atmosphere, bar more

SWEET! 8/21/2002

Once you find Sweet Devil Moon, you'll want to keep coming back for more. The menu is pretty static and not so long that you'll lose yourself in options. The Garlic Shrimp rules, and there are plenty of other great Peruvian treats to choose from. The atmosphere is pretty cool, funky, and somewhat cozy. more

Imagine yourself in Peru... 8/18/2002

Fabulous food, easy going Sangria, lounge music(on some nights), service: sometimes it's good and sometimes it's not! It's one of my favorite places... more

devlishly delightful 8/14/2002

It just gets better and better at this hidden treasure! The drinks this summer rock - mojitos and passion martinis! As the heat begins to wane, the patio is the place to be this fall. Though I've read previous reviews complaining of waiters, everyone I've met is not only attentive and informative, the staff is absolutely fun! Great place for surprise birthday's or a fun and impressive date. Totally affordable. Best nights to avoid a wait: Mon- Thurs. Pros: great wait staff, fun food, live music on wkend Cons: , none more

Home Away From Home 8/13/2002

We love SDM and go every chance we get. It has become our home away from home. The atmosphere is wonderful. Everything on the menu that we have tried has been delicious, especially the grape leaves and lomo saltado. I don't think we've gone 2 weeks without just hanging out at the bar and drinking sangria or mojito's til the late night hours. Truly a wonderful addition to Decatur and Oakhurst. more

Great place!! 8/13/2002

One of my favorite places to go!!! The food is good, the drinks are wonderful - love the Mojitos!!! The recently opened patio adds a nice touch and I can't wait for the new wine bar to open. Pros: moderate prices, nice people, fun Cons: live music too loud more

Excellent 8/8/2002

The restaurant was a wonderful blend of comfortable yet quirky charm with excellent Food and drinks. I highly recommend the Yucca Rellena for a dinner item. It is a "must try" for anyone who has not experienced what true Peruvian Tapas is all about. And what can I say for the tropical nectar called "Mojitos?" They were a fantastic blend of Rum, pineapple, fresh mint, and lime juice that only left me wanting more. All I can say is Perfecto!!! Pros: Great Food & Drinks, Inexpensive, Good Looking Staff Cons: Crowded, Bigger menu, Kid Friendly more

delish! 8/6/2002

sweet devil moon has a wonderful tapas menu. there is something to please all palates. more

10 8/6/2002

This place rocks! It's a small and cozy with great attention given to food and customer alike. I have been there 3 times since they opened, and each time the owner, Maria was greeting customers and making sure they were completely satisfied. I love it, I felt like I was back home in Columbia. Russell Porter Pros: Small, Cozy, Romantic Cons: None, None, None more

Superb Tapas! 8/3/2002

Sweet Devil Moon has great Peruvian tapas! They have a wide array of strange and interesting dishes that are sure to excite your taste buds. Your best bet is to get about 3 or so tapas dishes and then order more as your appetite dictates. They also have a great bar, a friendly staff and great live music on the weekends. The owner is very nice as well and we've been back many, many times since we first went. I highly recommend Sweet Devil Moon. Nice Prices too. For 2 people with alcoohol you can plan on spending about $30-40. Pros: atmosphere, food, staff Cons: size more

Cozy, dramatic atmosphere 5/28/2002

Love the atmosphere here. The decor and seating arrangements make it feel extra cozy--even on the small outdoor patio. Definitely try the fried squid or the mussels. Skip the soup (really watery) and the mango salsa. I've definitely had better tapas, but the atmosphere and drinks (love the Pisco Sour) are reason enough to visit. Pros: atmosphere, parking more

  • The Scene
With its dripping altar candles, blood-red walls and funky almond-eyed Madonna paintings, this neighborhood tapas bar has the feel of a hip lounge. Inside are two narrow rooms--one stocked with comfy chairs and another featuring a fun corrugated tin bar and a grouping of small tables. Service is low-key and extremely friendly.

    The Food
The short menu features flavorful small plates. If you're here with a few friends, it's easy to cover the entire menu, but be sure not to miss the Jalea (fried squid and fish served with jalapeno and tamarind salsas), mellow, sweet garlic shrimp, and especially some variety of yucca (either fried or tossed cold in a garlicky marinade). Lomo Saltado (fried potatoes tossed with peppers and beef sirloin) and marinated, grilled pork are ideal ballast for a big night out. Need a new cocktail vice? Try the Pisco sour.
