Better Service Needed! 4/22/2010

Just ate at this location after many years b/c of food being terrible. Have eaten other Japanese restaurants in downtown Hillsboro, Orenco and like to try other places. Much to my surprise, the location has expanded, food is not bad, but when I am pushed to order time after time, and then not once did the waittress come back to check on us except to ask if we were finished and give us the check. After delivering the food, we asked for more wasabi and was forgotten. Although there were two waittresses, only one was really running the show, not giving the other girl and opportunity to maybe make some tips. I have waited on tables for many years prior to a profession and WOW! Pros: Food not bad, conveniently located! Cons: Service horrible, can have better personality!!!! more

Excellent Sushi 3/8/2010

If you want excellent, inexpensive sushi this is your place! We can even take our kids, the pot stickers and bulgogi are wonderful! Pros: inventive rolls, nice atmostphere Cons: no beer! :( Boo! closed Sundays more

One of the best in the PDX area 2/28/2010

We discovered this place about 8 months ago. Wow! Now our favorite sushi place so far in the Portland area. Awesome, friendly service (all employees in te front say ""hello"" and ""goodbye""). The head chef even remembers us.\r We love the sushi rolls named after states.\r \r I do wish they served beer and/or cocktails, but barely notice in lihgt of the food and service.\r \r I don't think the previous poster went to the same place we did, unless lunch is vastly different from dinner. Pros: Awesome food, excellent/friendly service Cons: no alcohol more

Horrible! 12/14/2009

I see that the previous review for this place is from August 2009. Indeed summer 2009 is roughly the last time I visited Sushi & Maki (lunch) and had nothing really bad to say about the place (not great but it was OK esp. for a quick lunch) up until now. My most recent visit changed it all. What a precipitous fall in quality! My wife & I ordered 2 salmon bento dishes. I probably would've not noticed the funny tasting salmon (given that it was in teriyaki sauce) but the spoiled ginger (strong earthly/soil taste) triggered the initial alarms. We also ordered two rolls which were simply unfresh - strong fishy (think herring here) odor on what was salmon & tuna -type rolls. Sour flavor. Slimy texture. To top off the mistake of the week, the service was indifferent & border lining rude. This is inexcusable in a place like the suburbs of Portland, with so many other lunch (even sushi) options. What a waste of money this was! \r \r PS I'd really would give it ""no star"" rating but that does not appear to be an option. Pros: Location Cons: FOOD QUALITY (LACK OF!) & service more

Great Sushi! 8/5/2009

My Husband and I tried this out last week and are looking forward to going back. The Sushi was excellent. We had a hard time trying to order becasue so many things sounded good. This is one of my new favorite Sushi places. Pros: Sushi Selection and Quality Cons: Nothing more

great place!! 12/28/2008

I'd really recommend this place! The sushi is always fresh, and the sides are always tasty;my favorite is the steamed gyoza! I don't have to force my kids to eat any healthy food here. Most of the food is healthy for you, so no worries about nutrition. Not only is the food just delicious, the service is also better than the other sushi restaurants. The employees at Sushi & Maki seem to be absolutely happy to work and serve. If you like healthy sushi, great service, and a wonderful family friendly environment, try Sushi & Maki. Pros: super service, yummy food Cons: limited parking space more

Love it 5/14/2008

This place looked like a little hole in the wall along with all the other restaurant and stores near it, but when I walked in and tried it I was so amazed at how great it was. I would recommend it to anyone. Food is fresh, place is never busy, always prompt, friendly staff, good pricing. I go here at least once a week! I would never go to another sushi place unless someone was forcing me. more

A hidden gem! 7/11/2007

If you want great sushi, quality service, entertaining quirky music (think Bee Gees & Barbra Streisand) in a sweet little place, then this is your restaurant. None of that hokey sushi restaurant train stuff, no mystery plates driving by with color coding. Just a high quality menu, fresh produce & fish all the time, very friendly staff & almost always speedy service. Never smells like seafood, and offers lots of menu choices in both sushi & traditional japanese dishes. Great for take-out too! I've brought my toddler here numerous times and I would say it's reasonably kid friendly, and can accomodate a smaller group, maybe 15 or so max. Take your friends & family and share this hidden secret in Hillsboro. Beats the heckfire out of Sushi Town or Mio or any other posh wanna-be sushi place. Pros: yum, good food, cute decor, good prices, great service, consistent quality Cons: parking more

Best Portland Sushi SE 82nd 6/22/2007

The only sushi place that I will go to for ""quality"" sushi. Skip the round about sushi places, this place is the bomb. Good sushi rolls, tasty hand rolls, tempura is light and fluffy, full of flavor. Staff is friendly to everyone. Pros: lots of parking, service, food more

Fresh and tasty sushi and wonderful other items!! Inviting decor, all around outsanding. S.E. 82nd location 12/28/2006

I llive just down the road from this new place called sushi & maki on s.e. 82nd, just n. of the winco and s. of the circuit city in a little strip mall w/ a sleep country usa in the same strip. heck i thought i was onto something, little did i know this is a 2nd location. i really want to keep this a secret because it was SOO amazing!!! but something this good needs to be shared. i have my favorite place and i keep it in high standing and have yet to find a place to make me think otherwise, well i think i have found it. the service was outstanding, quick and friendly by everyone. the menu sizeable but not overwhelming. talk about fresh and tasty sushi and presented beautifuly. there is a little something for everyone, for those who do not like fish, there is a marinated beef roll that is out of this world yummola!!! my only concern was the size of some of the rolls, kind of big and hard to get in one bite but no big deal, i'll gladly deal with it!!! the decor is inviting and not glaring, the lighting good. it is really hard to find anything bad about this place. if you know what's good for you, you'll make a beeline to this place. recommended items: oregon, new mexico rolls, there are a bunch of 'state' rolls, the marinated beef roll. Pros: THE FOOD, decor is nice and parking good Cons: Some of the rolls are a little big for one bite more

Great Sushi & Service! 11/27/2006

My dinining experience at Sushi & Maki restaurant was absolutely wonderful. This place has fresh, delicious sushi & roll, but also has fabulous hot food items. I can enjoy great sushi and company while my ""NONFISH lover"" friends enjoy Tempura, Udon and teriyaki dishes. This place is run by the owners, so you can bet that they have great service and fresh food. Pros: Friendly service and great food. more

New second location 11/24/2006

We have been coming to this lovely place for a few years, and enjoyed every single visit. As you can see in these reviews, sushi is one of the freshest in the area and the service is also great. \r They recently opened the second restaurant in Portland (the original one is in Hillsboro) under the same name. My wife and I recently visited the new restaurant (it's on SE 82nd ave. between winco and circuit city). The menu is same but it's bigger than the original one. The staffs were great as always. Recommend ""State rolls"" (our fav is Hawaii roll) and hand rolls. Pros: Great service, fresh sushi, 2nd location in portland Cons: crowded parking (for the original location in hillsboro; 2nd location has a large parking lot) more

Best sushi 6/26/2006

This is located in an old strip mall in Hillsboro and the outside appearance does not do it justice.\r Inside it is charming and the staff very friendly. The rolls are fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. My fave is the Rhode Island. more

Fantastic, our favorite place 6/15/2006

Great Chefs, great food, great value. If you are looking for fresh sushi, good value and friendly service, this is the place. Their creative lineup of state rolls has something for everyone. My wife has tried various seaweed salads and tofu dishes and she has enjoyed them. I prefer the fresh nigri, and this is where I have chosen to break in my palate for different fish. If you eat here, you will be critical elsewhere. Paul and the guys behind the counter are VERY creative, and always friendly to talk to. The Washington roll (rainbow roll) is great and all the fish is as fresh as you will find. Drive out from Portland to Hillsboro and you will be rewarded. This palce is always consistent, and it is consistently great. Pros: Great food, great staff, great value more

Suburban Jewel 2/12/2006

This restaurant is far and away the best sushi that I have ever had! I am always willing to drive out to the HIllboro airport for this place. Great service, great food, great atmosphere! The only downside is the one CD of jazz music that they play over and over again. Pros: Never crowded, Friendly, Top-notch food Cons: Repetitive Music, Middle of Nowhere more

Fresh, friendly, affordable quiality! 12/15/2005

This place has been consistantly the best sushi i have had in central hillsboro. They have a wide (huge) selection of rolled sushi. More often then not toro is available and fresh (market price) but worth it. Portions are ample and tasty. Fried food is not greasy and crisp. Very friendly staff.Lunch and dinner are split hours of service Pros: fresh fish, good service, consistant quality Cons: smaller dining area more

New Favorite Place to come for Sushi 8/24/2005

Try their agedashi tofu...it is the best that I ever had...their sushi rolls are good and fresh also, this restaurant does not have the ""fishy"" smell that some of the other places do that are around town... Pros: Not Crowded, Polite Staff, Good Location Cons: Crowded Parking more

Kind of like ""Cheers"" 5/5/2005

I love this sushi place. Every time I go in there the GREAT staff remembers who I am and knows exactly what I want. Their bento plates for lunch are not only a killer deal, they are filling and tasty. I like everything about this place. In my opinion, absolutely the BEST sushi on the west side, if not altogether. Good prices, good people, great fresh sushi! Pros: Friendly, Fresh, Great Value more
