Best

The yellowtail, spicy tuna, and salmon avocado rolls tasted fresh and delicious, as always.

Worst

I'm a huge fan of sushi (see my review for Sushi Go 55); however, last night all I wanted was Tempura Udon. Once I saw their menu, I decided to try a Spider roll. They definitely ...

I am addicted... 4/29/2007

Ok Ok...if you are all about traditional sushi, go to little tokyo or some of the places in the valley where the sushi chef is more like a Japanese version of the ""soup Notsi"" (spelled wrong because citysearch considers this an inappropriate word!) on Seinfeld. Pros: Great creative rolls, great value, good location near fox and hounds, good casual date place Cons: small tables with too big plates, parking, sometimes service can be slow or nuts more

Never again. 4/29/2007

I'm a huge fan of sushi (see my review for Sushi Go 55); however, last night all I wanted was Tempura Udon. Once I saw their menu, I decided to try a Spider roll. They definitely had some very tasty sounding rolls. My husband stuck with sashimi, he did however diverge a little by ordering the Garlic Tuna Sashimi. I should mention we sat at the sushi bar. I like to see the chef's in action. My husband's Hamachi (yellowtail) sashimi and Garlic Tuna sashimi arrived almost instantaneously. Good. But that's where ""good"" ended. Asked what he thought of the sashimi, he said ""Tasteless."" Good sushi has taste. The fish is not meant to be a carrier for wasabi and sauces. As I watched our chef prepare my Spider roll I started to suspect something was not right when he unceremoniously squirted about a quarter of his unagi sauce bottle all over my roll! When it was plopped down in front of me, ugh.... yuk, it was drowning in sauce. For good reason too. To hide the taste of the crab! How do I say this? It was bad. One bite and I put it aside. The roll was also enormous, a normal Spider roll you should be able to pop a whole piece in your mouth (sushi is meant to be bite-sized NOT something massive that falls apart when you try to eat it). To eat the roll, I had to dismantle it and just eat the content. The taste was so sickenly sweet from all the sauce, I stopped eating that too after 1 piece. Pros: pretty waitresses, good sake list Cons: food, music, t.v, parking, LOUD more

Best Sushi, hands down! 4/14/2007

The best sushi restaurant in all the land!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have been going there for over 6 years. Always awesome, always affordable, healthy portions, and ROCKIN sushi! The only sushi place I will go to because all else never even compare! more

So good! 4/14/2007

At first I was upset there wasn't valet and parking seemed impossible especially in the dark alley, then I was upset because the outside looked like a Liquor store, then when we were seated and our food came I was happy. I remember Sushi Dan as being one of the best places I've ever had sushi. I didn't like the interior as much as I did the food. Apparently, the one on sunset has a better decor. As a joke, a friend said it was his bday and we got this free dessert, tempura green tea which was really tasty. more

Not worth the buzz 4/3/2007

This place had okay sushi, was not wowed at all. The service was good, not outstanding. we sat at the sushi bar and was just not impressed. Trying to find parking was a joke - but if the restaurant was good enough we don't care about parking. There are so many other tastier sushi restaurants to dine, try Ahi Sushi on Ventura or even Tengu in Westwood. Or go next door to Fox and Hound for a pint and listen to good live music. Pros: Innovative sushi Cons: just not tasty or fresh more

Worst service ever!!! 3/26/2007

Went here on a Saturday night with a group of 5 and I was simply amazed at how great the food is and how completely awful the service is. I thought the atmosphere was young, fun, and loud in a good way. We didn't wait too terribly long for a table, but we did make reservations and got seated about 30 minutes after we arrived. The sushi chefs all say HI to everyone when you walk in - and you can't help but say hello back to them. But after sitting for what seemed like eternity without any food or water it was all I could do not to go to the kitchen and get it myself!!! EVERY time we wanted anything at all we had to literally grab any waiter we happened to see and drag them back to the table. It was all worth it for the Las Vegas Roll and the baked salmon roll though!!! Food = Phenomenal / Service = Terrible Pros: sushi chefs, great food Cons: horrible service more

Good stuff, but know what to expect 3/8/2007

I like Sushi Dan. I'd go elsewhere for more traditional sashimi and so on, but what keeps me coming back are the wide variety of innovative rolls they have. The combos and sauces are excellent. And their barbecued eel (which is my benchmark of quality at a sushi place) is very good, light and just a little crunchy. If you just want a simple cup of miso and a california roll there are plenty of joints. But if you want to stretch your culinary boundaries a bit then give this place a try! Now that being said, here's what to expect: Parking sux, period. The strip-mall lot is jam-packed at night so pray to the parking gods for a spot on Ventura. It can be crowded (especially on weekends) so plan accordingly. It can be loud. It's a hipster spot, although I haven't had to deal with any wannabees yacking on their cell in my ear (yet). And the service can be erratic and uneven, so order your drinks the minute you sit down and be proactive about flagging down your waittress. more

Bad Service, Good Sushi 12/24/2006

Maybe it's just the Sherman Oaks branch of this lucrative chain - but I can honestly say that I'd rather drive down to Venice to eat at Canal Club, a far superior sushi place, than eat here again. The food is good, however the customer service of the management makes me laugh. I reserved space for a party of 6 that later, during the night, expanded to a party of 10. You would think that they would be happy for the increased income from our party. However, the manager tried to shame me into feeling like I was making his life more difficult on a Friday night by not making a reservation. When I explained that I HAD made a reservation and HAD informed his staff early on that the number in my party might increase, he grudgingly added another chair to our table. If a person makes a reservation and follows through with what they said, don't make it seem like it's their burden if they bring you more customers. Pros: Sushi is good, Placement on Sushi Row is also good Cons: Service, Management, Parking more

Have had better 10/3/2006

Shitake Mushroom Sushi - tasted a little funky Pros: Parking Lot, Fast Service Cons: Food does not deserve a 9.8 more

Awesome sushi, Questionable service. 9/29/2006

Let me start by saying I love, love, love the sushi at Sushi Dan! I love it so much that I'm willing to put up with long waits, non-existant parking, and lousy service. I live close so I go often because the food is soooo good. Lots of variety and unique dishes. I understand when there's a full house the servers can be overwhelmed, but the service really leaves something to be desired. Great place to with friends and keep it casual - no good for kids or romantic dates. Go when you have a lot of time to spare. Pros: Best sushi around, unique dishes Cons: hard to find parking, bad service more

Good luck with parking! 9/13/2006

I live walking distance from this place so i'm pretty much a regular. Quality of food and portion size is above average for the price and the atmosphere makes any weeknight feel like the weekend. The place is usually packed but seems under-staffed as they seem to forget or mix up orders quite often (at least 1 or more mistake the last 4 times i've been there) Pros: Ambience, Quality, Quantity Cons: Service more

One of the Best in LA 8/8/2006

I love this place...I always come by whenever I'm around the area...the rolls are innovative, but I especially love the chirashi dish for the fresh fish they use...the staff are friendly, but seating can be a pain at times...but I'd choose the great food over the cons any time... Pros: fresh ingredients, casual atmosphere Cons: parking, crowded seating more

Step it UP Sushi DAN 6/12/2006

I think about sushi almost every hour of the day. I have been to Japan and eaten incredible sushi so I consider my palette to be pretty well versed. I like Sushi Dan because of its diversity in fish and there are some unique ingredients in their dishes. The portions are awesome. However, I feel that ever since Sushi Dan opened a new location in Hollywood the quality is slipping . Some simple dishes (ex. the spicy tuna salad and the soy beans) just seem to lack luster. I recommend this place of course, and I go back myself, but it needs a nudge to step it back up. Pros: Amazing selection of rolls. Great portions. Cons: Acoustics are bad, can't hear anything more

20 Something Sushi 6/7/2006

If you don't know any better then this is a great place. Yes, the fish is good, fresh and served in some unique combinations BUT there is better. This location is small, overcrowded and way too loud. But if you're in your twenties and you spend half your meal on your phone (as many were) then this is the place for you. Our waitresss forgot a good portion of our order and when i asked about a certain dish she tried to ""educate"" me in the ways of the orient when I've travelled to many countries on that side of the world. I wouldn't mind going back but with all the good sushi houses along the strip I'll try the others first. more

i dream of sushi dan 6/2/2006

the portions are huge and the menu can be overwhelming with so much variety. if u love salmon, don't even bother ordering sashimi. if u get the sushi, it comes with an additional slab of salmon on top of ur two pieces. what a deal!! the lobster roll - heaven if u can stomach it. their oyster shooters is hands down their specialty, which comes in a glass of two oysters in a ponzu sauce. TO DIE FOR. skip on the mochi ice cream. don't know how you can go wrong with it but that was their only downfall, and occasional slow service. i'm a finnicky food critic but this place is a GEM!!! Pros: OYSTER SHOOTERS!!, large portions, reasonal prices Cons: bad desserts, can have slow service more

Exceptional sushi & rolls 11/24/2005

I read several reviews on citysearch and decided to give it a try. It was really worth it. Sushi Dan provides exceptional sushi & rolls at reasonable prices. The only con I have experienced so far is the time it gets them to prepare your order if it is take out. This has happened to me already several times. But other than that - it's the place to go! Pros: Roll variety, Price, Dine-in service Cons: Time for take-outs more

Sushi Blah 10/29/2005

Horrible service. Very slow and they couldn't figure out what we ordered. We were a party of 9. The sushi was so so. I've had better sushi from a super market. The food presentation is nice... Pros: Reasonable Cons: Poor Food more

Yummy Food~~ 9/20/2005

I just try it out after reading the reviews, and i really like it. Good quilty and quanity. they dont use cheap fish as i see. Their fish is fresh and big. and their rolls are unique. I never seen it anywhere else. Very nice presentation as well. It opens up my appetize. Highly recommended. Must try~~ more

BEST SUSHI EVER!!! 9/2/2005

WHEN YOU REALLY KNOW SUSHI, YOU KNOW WHAT SHOULD AND SHOULD NOT BE IN IT. AT SUSHI DAN THE CHEFS REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING, OUT OF ALL THE SUSHI PLACES I'VE GONE TO NOTHING HAS BEEN BETTER THAN SUSHI DAN. THEY EVEN HAVE 2 GREAT LOCATIONS THAT ARE ACTUALLY WORTH DRIVING TO. ESPECIALLY KNOWING WHAT YOU'RE ABOUT TO TASTE. WHOA TRUST ME IT'S WORTH IT... JUST GO AND SEE FOR YOURSELF. Pros: FUN, EXCITING, DELICIOUS more

Give them lots of time when ordering to go 7/10/2005

Sushi Dan's has amazing sushi. The quality is great with large portions. I am always impressed with the taste. When dining in the staff is attentive and the food is delivered quickly. When ordering to go it's a different story. Two of the three times I've ordered to go it has taken 25 min longer then they quoted me on the phone when placing the order. This caused quite a problem while on my lunch break. Their to go system seems very unorganized. But as always the sushi was great. more
