Downhill 3/16/2012

When this restaurant was new to chesterfield my soon to be husband and i went here to check it out. The food was phenomenal. He loved his steak and I loved my fish. The lump crab cake was great. The service was impeccale? We enjoyed ourselves so much that we returned for valentines day (2008). Again - great food and great service. So we decided we should go every valentines day - it would be our special place. That is until the next valentines day (2009). That turned out to be disasterous.my husband said they didn't take reservations but that they had something called call ahead seating. We were told we would not have to wait longer than 2 hours and the average was 30 minutes. We arrived slightly early for our 5:30 reservation and we headed to the bar. Finally at 7:30 my husband and I had had enough and insisted to be seated. I was intoxicated as I had been saving myself all day for the highly anticipated food. I had a couple of drinks at the bar to kill some time and it destroyed my appetite. Not to mention by the time we got our food it was after 8 and it was too late for me to eat. For destroying our valentines day all we received was a verbal apology. I had my entree wrapped in its entirety and we headed home after my husband was finished with his food. The next day I still had a bad taste in my mouth over the whole experience, but I thought what better way to make it go away than to eat my yummy food. So I grabbed my entree from the fridge and dumped it on a plate. That's when I saw it. A long black hair on the bottom of the to go container right where my $30.00 untouched fish had been. YUCK!keep in my mind my hair was short and blonde at the time. i couldn't believe it and so I threw the whole thing out and vowed to never go back to Stoney river. That was in 2009. This past Christmas time (2011), I thought I would return for some reason - mainly to get a gift card for my grandparents. It's not the most convenient drive so I figured we are here we may as well eat. Huge mistake! The crab cake I had so loved before was absolutely smothered in a horseradishy sauce that completely overpowered the taste of the crab (seems to have maybe been spilled or something - there was that much). My fish (the same one that I had ordered all of my previous trips) had a horrific taste and was so overdone that it was actually inedible. The waiter was slow and seemed confused most of the time making what should have taken no more than an hour take 2 hours. This is unacceptable anywhere but for the price it is blasphemous. I would rather eat $30.00 worth of fish sandwiches from McDonalds in one day that dare order from this restaurant again. more

Microwaved Prime Rib 9/17/2011

I'm not sure what more I need to say beyond my subject heading: ""Microwaved Prime Rib."" I've never even seen a microwaved prime rib before this, but they did indeed deliver a gray, tough, slab of meat to my table, along with some Campbells Soup consomme, and they insisted it was an end cut of prime rib. Disgusting.\r \r The service was excellent. more

Great steak house 10/3/2010

My wife and I loved this place 10/21/2009

We've dined here several times and it has always been wonderful. The food is prepared just as we requested. The staff is always friendly and helpful. This, and Annie Gunn's are our two favorites in Chesterfield. Pros: Great food, prompt service, nice setting Cons: No reservations, but call ahead works fairly well more

Stay inside the shock collar 4/3/2009

This is supposed to be an upscale steakhouse like Ruth's Chris or Flemings; Shrimp cocktail had upscale pricing, but was presented in a cafeteria style ceramic bowl piled up on one side, on top of shaved ice probably from the Drury Inn next door. Dinner plates did not match; One was outlined with checkerboard pattern reminicent of the old Steak n Shake plates. Prime rib had rubber texture like the ones from the old Ramada Inn buffets. Filet medallions were different sizes, but they made up for it by cooking each one differently. Stick with Citizen Kanes, Sams, Charcoal house or Flemings. Pros: Great atmosphere Cons: Average quality, poor timing more

Great Steaks! Terrific Meal! 3/15/2009

honestly, this was a terrific steak dinner. we had the ny strip steaks and baked potato - couldn't have been better. the hostess totally lacked warmth and personality, but our waitress, etc., were great. Comped us coffee because one steak was too rare and had to go back - also brought complementary cake because it was our anniversary. the room was noisy and that's my only complaint - tables are close together and voices were loud - but we had a great celebratory dinner! Pros: Best steak I've had in a long time Cons: it's noisy in the dining room; portions were very large! more

You have to be kidding 10/20/2008

Somebody claimed as good as Citizen Kane's? LMAO. Not even close in regard to food quality. This is just another chain steak place, with a lousy reservation system (not real reservations, just go on a list and wait), seating that is not customer centered but is profit centered, and poor management training. It is beyond me why places do not copy the Ritz Carlton/4 Seasons/Nordstroms customer service protocols. Pros: In Missouri Cons: Anything else more

First impressions are important... 4/11/2008

and my first impression was not very positive. I attended a bachelor party diner at Stoney River some time ago. When I got there I was greeted by the host and seated at the bar as the rest of my party was not there yet. The host and the bartenders were very friendly. When my group arrived we were seated immediately and our drink orders were taken. Our waiter had a very thick accent so we could barely understand the specials as he recited them. He took our orders and then the fun began. There was a mix-up with our appetizers. Some of us received what we ordered; others did not. They even tried to give us appetizers from another table. When our entres came two of the guys in our party did not receive what they ordered and one had a strip steak that was nothing but fat. We spoke to the manager who acted as though that was normal (keep in mind this is a $30 steak) and that she could get him another one but it may take 30 - 40 minutes since they were very busy. Our waiter came around once to ask about refills (we were there for 2-1/2 hours) and then took all of our glass when the table was bused even if they were not empty. No dessert menu was offered. My food was excellent but a little pricey. The tip was of course already factored into the bill due to the number in our party and was ridiculous (about $100) for the service we had been given. After the table was bused our waiter disappeared and the manager brought our bill. No compensation was offered for the mistakes and I believe the entire situation was handled poorly by the staff. I am going back tonight to take my wife for her first visit. I am willing to give them a second chance and will update tomorrow. If my first experience is repeated I will drop my rating to below average. Pros: Excellent steaks and dinner rolls. Cons: Poor service, pricey, management not responsive to customer complaints. more

Bad Experience 12/18/2007

We chose Stoney river for our annual famliy holiday dinner this year. When we arrived they tried to put us in smoking when I specifically asked for non. \r \r They proceeded to put us in a room with a large company Christmas party that was so cramped the servers could not get in between the tables. We had to pass glasses and dishes down the table several times when the server couldnt squeeze through. it was also so loud in the room that the server had to present the specials at both sides of our table. We couldnt have normal conversation during dinner. To get up and go to the restroom was a feat in and of itself.\r \r We asked to be moved but the reply was ""no we dont have anywhere to put you"".\r \r The steaks were great but the sides are just ""OK"". No one could enjoy each others company , so it was just going through the motions of eating. We would have been better off this year ordering pizza delivery and saving the money.\r \r My wife and Mother in law ordered Salmon with Spinach. The entrees came with Green Beans instead of spinach. They brought out the Spinach though.\r \r You would think a high end steak house would do something to make up for the poor seating arrangements, especially after a complaint. A personal conversation with the GM at a minimum would have been better than ""see ya"". My mother called and spoke with the GM the next day and nothing was offered. He said""let me know the next time you come in"". Too bad we'll never be back. This dinner is held only once a year. We wouldnt think of giving them the chance to ruin it again.\r \r I'd recommend going to Ruth Chris or Mortons over this place. They wouldnt think of overbooking a room just to get the business. Bad thing is, now I have nothing good to say about Stoney River.\r \r UPDATE!!!! THEY CHARGED MY CARD TWICE FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!! more

Don't miss this culinary treat 7/1/2007

I don't consider myself a connoisseur, but I know a good steak when I taste it! I also know good customer service when I see it; from the hostess, to the bartender, to the wait staff. Service was attentive and personable. My filet was great,..tender..flavorful and cooked just as I ordered it. After dinner, I wanted to order another to take with me (thinking about it makes me wish I would've). The overall dining experience was very pleasant. There's no doubt that I'll be visiting this establishment again in the near future. But you don't have to take my word for it. I highly suggest that you go and find out for yourself. Pros: The entire dining experience; from entrance to exit. Cons: None that I can think of. more

Business or Pleasure 10/26/2006

The flash fried lobster tail appetizer was an excellent lead-in to the perfect steak. They take their steaks very seriously at Stoney River! I have never had steak with such a velvety texture (the coffee-cured filet). The carmelized onion mashed potatoes are a must. Regretably, no room for desert!\r Dark woods and rich colors make the atmosphere warm and intimate which works for both a very professional business meeting or a cozy night out with friends. more

Outstanding service and exceptional food. Wonderful addition to the area. 10/26/2006

Love the atmosphere and the attention I received upon arrival. The place is inviting and the service is always there--attentive without being obtrusive. The food lived up to the promise with an exceptional steak and these delicious Stone Puppies bread baskets. Can't wait to return. Pros: Food, Atmosphere and Service more

Ranks up there with Citizen's Kane's 10/4/2006

I had ate at their Roswell, GA and Louisville, KY locations prior to them coming to STL. Now I have been to the STL location twice and the one thing I can say about this place is you get consistency no matter which location you dine at. They have phenominal steaks and their carmelized onion mashed potatoes are awesome. The service is solid and the atmosphere is not stuffy like most upscale restaurants. I had the GM and one of the Managing Partners approach my table on both visits to make sure we were completely satisfied. Make sure you save room for dessert! Get to this spot as soon as you can. Pros: Everything Cons: Maybe a touch pricey...but large portions make up for it. more
