Good Dogs 11/15/2011

Great place for getting your dog on. The beef dogs are not bad. They have a nice snap to them if you like that kind of thing. Me personally, I like the dirty water dogs of NYC, just can't take NYC out of the boy. Their sauerkraut is actually a bit too sweet for my taste. I like a nice sour kick when I eat that stuff. Ambiance is just right and it is conveniently located. All in all, not a bad place, not a great place either, but I would eat there again. our fave family resto 7/12/2011

Now you know why the place is packed on weekends...awesome place, great food and reasonably priced. It has been something like a tradition for me, my wife and daughter to go to the stand at least once or twice a month (yeah, even on weekends when its full of people). We just love the food here. I always order hotdogs and my wife loves their burger and salad. Its definitely are fave family resto :) more

Not going back 9/12/2009

I am still a fan of the hot dogs, but after my last visit, I may not be back. I've been going here for years. While other hot dog places have come and went, this place has been the best. The Chicago Dog is my favorite. I went today and the women told me that between 3-5 they have dollar dogs. My friend and I ordered them and loved them. We decided to have two more. I went back up to get them and got on line at 4:55. When I got to the front I ordered 2 more dollar dogs and was told by the woman that it was 5:01 and there were no more dollar dogs. I thought she was kidding, so I laughed. She said there was nothing she could do and didn't even apologize. It's strange because the place wasn't even that busy. Not sure if this was just an isolated incident, but thought it was really strange. Pros: Great hot dogs Cons: Awful service more

A great place for the family and good hot dogs! 12/1/2008

I take my grand kids here a few times a month on the weekend. The food is good and the prices are reasonable. My wife and I are fans. more

Clueless & Contemptuous... 9/21/2008

11:00 am mid-week, the place is empty but for one other customer inside and one on the patio. I drive by and decide I really ought to try this place that was so well reviewed by the Times (tells us much about the Times, as we shall see...), so I stop in, it's pretty pretentious, but it's on par with this neighborhood and order three entree items to get a sense of the place - as I really miss the Weiner Factory and am dying to find a replacement, but that's another story. So they give me my drink cup and I sit at an inside in plain view of the order taker and the cook. At five minutes and ten minutes I make polite ""what's up"" eye contact with the order taker and other staffers because I don't want to be rude and ask why it's taking so long, and they look back at me but don't react in any way, just the usuall deer in the headlights you get from the dopes that work in food service. Finally at about fifteen I walk the ten feet to the counter and ask what the hell is up because by this point I'm pretty angry and it turns out that my ticket is hanging right in front of the clueless cook but he's doing nothing but staring off into space. So everyone promises to get very busy with my order and by the way it will all be free but food never tastes good when you have to swallow this much idiocy along with it, so I get a full refund and go somewhere where they act like they want my business. The bottom line is - it doesn't matter how good the food is supposed to be when you can't actually get any of it. And the pretentiousness factor is way too high for me - so I haven't gone back. Pros: Can't think of a one. Cons: Truly contemptuous of their clientele. more

Great place for the locals 7/9/2008

Our family goes to the stand at least every other week, especially in the summer. It's a great place to take the kids and not have to cook, without spending a fortune (like most of the other restaurants in this area). It's somewhere between fast food and a sit-down restaurant, and no fast food joint I've seen has live jazz two nights a week!\r \r I have to admit, my kids have the burgers and I don't see them as being very appetizing. On the thin side. I would expect a big juicy burger, but this is not it. Though the kids HATE big juicy burgers, so there you have it. My husband and I get the dogs, or I occasionally get a salad. These are completely satisfying, tasty choices. Have I had better?? Maybe - but for a lot more money and absolutely no ambience. The Stand is relaxed, the people are nice, the patio is fabulous, the music is great. I love coming here. Plus they do wonderful casual private parties.\r \r If you've got a terrific hot dog place on your side of the hill, or valley or city... go ahead and stick there. We locals like the Stand and would enjoy not having to wait for a table!! Pros: Ambience, Live Jazz, Microbrews, Relaxed Atmosphere Cons: Can't think of any! more

Great food! 1/21/2008

Chicken apple sausage is just yummy! Great hot dogs at decent prices. Go during the week to beat the crowds...Saturday's during the day you can't get in the place. They're doing something right. Pros: The food is great Cons: packed on weekend days more

Too Many Phony One Star Posts 11/27/2007

Speaking about the posts from oneblondie and leeyeager... rarely should anyone trust extremely negative posts from reviewers that have only one post. and post two days in a row. As a person in the biz, it looks more like a local competitor than a real client. Pros: Garden Cons: No inside tables for $1 dog Mondays more

1st time and I'm Disapointed 9/19/2007

Zagat survey rates it well, but the hot dogs weren't anything special because the meat wasnt juicy, plump or even tasty, I would rather have a hot dog at costco or downtown LA. However the setting was cute and there was A LOT of patio seating. The place was empty for lunch time so I guess others feel the same. Pros: Nice setting for a hot dog joint. Cons: Bad hot dog. more

Horrible Food & Drink place 9/10/2007

Just a horrible experience! My burger was tasteless and my drink was more carbonated water than soda.\r The service was non-existent and the price was far more than I would have spent at any other burger or hot dog joint. Would never eat there again and will recommend that none of my friends or collegues go either. Cons: Food was awful, Drinks were awful, Service:what service? more

Worst Hot Dog Ever 9/9/2007

Honestly the worst hot dog I ever had, the fries were not much better, how did they find such small potatoes. Even the drinks (ice tea) didn't taste good. My boyfriend had a hamburger that looked terrible and they forgot the cheese, there was no taste to it at all.\r \r As for price, not that we cared but it was not inexpensive.\r \r I would have rather had an In ""N Out Burger any day.\r \r We would never return and tell all our friends not to go. Cons: Terrible food and drinks, too expensive for value more

This website does The Stand little justice. 7/5/2007

The sodas on tap are AMAZING, The parking in back is FREE, and they do except American Express. All meats are exceptional quality and no place has matched this dog in my book. Options Options Options. I usually go in there and get one dog the trusty Stand Way like the Big Blue or Southern Slaw and one my own way with the toppings I think would be good together. When I do the chicken sandwich I like to ""LOAD IT"" with grilled onions, mushrooms, and blue cheese. mmm mmm. Tis BOMB! NO DOUBT a 5 star place with a 3 star price. more

Great Place! 7/3/2007

First off... we've been here a few times over the years, and i don't think they ever served ""ahi"" tuna burgers. That being said, my mother-in-law lives in Encino, so we take the kids to The Stand when we go see her. They are nice to the kids and seem to understand that they are messy when they eat, as opposed to a few other brow-beating eateries in town. The food is great, especially the berkeley burger. They have kid's prices too, which makes it a little easier on the wallet. Definitely try the draft cream soda. It's like dessert in a cup. We were going to go to the new one in Century City, but it isn't opening up for weekends until later in July. Look forward to trying it. Pros: Great outdoor seating Cons: Can get very busy on Saturdays more

Worst hot dog I've ever tasted. 5/28/2007

This place should not be in the top 10 of anything. I only went because it's supposed to as good as Pink's or Carney's. WRONG, this place wouldn't know a good hot dog if it slapped them in the face and the french fries were cold. Needless to say I will not be going there again. more

okay as far as burgers go 11/8/2006

the only place i could compare this to is in-n-out. although the burgers there are better. and so are the fries. i had the ahi burger since that sounded better than the other things they were serving. it was a bit on the fishy side. can't say the place was bad, but it's not a palce i'll be going to again any time soon. more

The potato chips are great. 8/17/2006

The food here just isn't good but it's a nice place and it's cheap. I've had the vegi burger and I don't recomend it. If you're a vegetarian then don't go there. The potato chips are great though and the diet coke was not bad. Pros: Cheap food Cons: Not very good food. more

The food just isn't all that. 11/12/2005

I, too, was really excited when I first found the stand. I have been there more than 4 times in the last year. Unfortunately, however, I like the ambience more than the food. The hot dogs are tough, and for some reason, always cold, even when I ask for them to be grilled. The hamburgers are thin, grey patties, not fresh meat. Yes, the toppings are great, but it really doesn't matter if the base isn't good. All and all, wish they would rethink the staples. Pros: Ambience, outdoor seating Cons: Food more

Best new joint 10/1/2004

I never thought I would see a place come into LA and compete with Pink's when it comes to hot dogs. Well, the Stand has shown up and put in quite competition with the heavywieght. Though the two places have their differences, the Stand has found a way to (no pun intended) stand on its own. From toppings such golden raisin onions, bbq baked beans, and blue cheese, no entry is the same or like anything else out there. The food is fresh and great quality. Pros: originality, taste, variety more

just hits the spot 8/7/2004

the blue cheese burger is probably the best burger ever. the fact that all the ingredients are fresh and that the burgers were cooked to order just makes it amazing. more

Great addition to the Valley 5/24/2004

Nothing but praise to give this little hot dog/hamburger joint in the heart of 818. Perfect for a sunny afternoon, sit outside, grab a dog and a beer and enjoy! Helpful and happy wait staff, the blue cheese burger and hickory burger are a must. Will go back again! Pros: good parking, helpful staff, great menu choices more
