Editorial review from Citysearch 3/24/2014

THIS IS SO DISGUSTING THAT YOU CALL YOURSELF EMERGENCY VETS but yet can't help a poor animal in pain with other than saying a 50/50 chance... what if that was a family member of yours and you were turned away because you didn't have the money... Disgusting that is what I say Thank goodness for social media everyone will find out what your business is all about I ran across this article and just could not believe it.... Kathleen P\r \r \r From keri sofia Kellogg\r After picking up our dog Marley from getting fixed yesterday from the Mosel Animal Clinic she started bleeding out of her incision. We called the vets office but they were closed and said to call the Southwest Michigan Animal Emergency Hospital owned by Ronald L. Moiles in Kalamazoo, MI. We took her in and they said they would need to open her back up to see where all the blood was coming from at a cost of $1800 and had to have at least $1000 down to do anything. By this time it was around 9pm on Friday night. We only had $400 and had already paid $218 to have her fixed earlier in the day and were denied for the credit card application they had in the office. They would not take what we had as a down payment and let us make payments. They ended up charging us $268 to put a bandage around her abdomen and sent us home with her, telling us that she had a 50/50 chance of making it till morning when we could find a vet to help her. She died at 3am this morning. She died because an emergency animal hospital would do nothing when they knew a 1yr old German Shepard was bleeding to death and as her owners we just didn't have the cash at that moment. Please share this so other people know where not to turn for help with their animals.\r \r \r \r \r more

Avoid if possible 2/17/2014

This vet hospital is horrible and it's very unfortunate that it's the only emergency vet clinic in the Kalamazoo area. Took my dog in after waking up and finding him in his crate stiff, with vomit on him, and foam around his mouth. They gave him fluids with the hopes of getting him stable enough to transport to MSU, but he had more seizures and was no longer able to breathe on his own and I had to put him down. Dr. Christine Homik is the coldest, most horrible veterinarian I have ever met and it's a shame she works in this industry. She bashed me for not finding him and bringing him in sooner and accused me of being an irresponsible pet owner and letting him get into something he shouldn't have (which he didn't). She could not have cared about me or my dog any less. The staff I encountered were unfriendly and not helpful. The only good thing I have to say about this hospital is that there was one veterinary assistant named Emily who was very kind and made sure that all of my que more

Great ER Hospital 11/11/2010

I have used this ER a few times and they have always been expedient, knowledgable and caring. The prices are really not that bad for a 24 hour ER hospital and the fact that a doctor is there with my dog round the clock is totally worth it. I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of emergency care for their furry loved ones! more

Almost killed our dog 5/4/2010

We took our dog there because he was throwing up and wasnt coordinated. They took blood tests and told us that it might be Addison's Disease and that it would cost us $2000 for them to keep him and test him and treat him. We couldnt afford this so we decided to put him down so that he wouldnt suffer. Then we asked what we could do to get him through the weekend so that we could go to our normal vet. The doctor got kinda angry with us but gave us some IVs, which we gave to the dog twice a day. He became his old self. We took him to the regular vet and he said that what they charged was outrageous and that our dog was doing just fine and that he didnt seem to have Addison's Disease and that the fluids that we asked for did the trick. But when a place tells you "THERE IS A SMALL CHANCE THAT HE WILL RECOVER ON HIS OWN THROUGH THE WEEKEND. THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY THAT HE WILL DIE AT HOME" you dont feel like you have many options... more

If they weren't in such a Big HURRY 8/7/2009

Let me tell you my story. we had a small dog who had problem with delivery of puppies, one of the puppies was caught in the birth canal, we took her to the vet and he said we needed to take her to animal emergency hospital, but first we needed to call first to let them know were coming and so they could tell us how much money it would cost, and it need to be paid on the spot so we did. when we got there they told us she need a C-section and it would cost about $ 1200.00 and we asked about having her spayed and they said yes, it would cost more about $ 1300.00 so we said yes. about 1 pm they call and said everything went good, they first said they want to keep her for 12 hours but then they said give us a call around 7 or 8 pm tonight and we did and they told us she was ready to go home so we pick her up, she just laid there and we figure she was still under anesthesia, so about 11 pm we went to bed and woke up at 3 am to find our dog DEAD. they said it might be infection or a blood cl more

Expedient and professional service 4/22/2008

I just returned from The SWMich Animal ER Hospital where my beloved dog was treated quickly and professionally. The staff there were compassionate and very helpful. While her allergic reaction was not as serious as it had been in the past, it would have been impossible for me to sleep tonight without having her checked out and I am so glad they are open all night for reasons such as this. I did not find their services to be overpriced; my dog is part of my family and I don't object to paying for top-notch care to ensure she is healthy and treated appropriately. I would recommend this clinic to anyone and would not hesitate to use their services again when my own regular vet was not open. It is reassuring to know there is an emergency service available for my dogs in this area that is open around the clock. more

I know I would gladly give up my routine appointment slot (shots, yearly check-up, etc) in order to let a dog who was urgently ill get in."\r \r Having worked in a veterinary clinic you should understand it is not always about the doctor rearranging their schedule to see emergencies. Most clinics are multi-faceted and may have surgeries going on and only one doctor in the office. You cannot stop a surgery to care for an emergency pet. When you have an emergency with your child or even yourself, you do not expect the doctor to rearrange their schedule to see you, you go to an emergency room. That is why it is great that the Southwest Michigan Animal Emergency Hospital is here! They provide a service that vet clinics cannot always provide. They often have doctors on staff who are more specialized in areas that a general v more

Okay with a few minor problems 8/21/2007

The vets are always very nice and it's great that you can get your heartworm meds there at the same price you find online. It's also great that they have the area's only emergency vet, so all your records are available when you have an emergency. However, there are a few things that have made me decide to switch vets.\r \r 1. There have been a few times when multiple pets were brought in and they seemed very disorganized and it took a while to get information about which pet needed what.\r 2. Prices seem a bit high, but I understand that they also have the only emergency clinic in the area.\r 3. When two of my dogs were quite ill (diarrhea and vomiting) with one being very lethargic, I called to get them an appointment as I wasn't sure if they had eaten something poisonous. It was 1 p.m. when I called (they closed at 6) and they couldn't get me in and told me to just wait 5 hours until the emergency vet opened and take them there. \r \r It was the last one that really made me switch. more

Great service 11/5/2005

They provide great service, feature friendly, helpful informative experience staff that seem to know what they're talking about. they are kind of expensive, I took my cat here on emergency for infected bite and it was over 300 for them to sedate & drain. conveniant location though.I would recommend them. more
