When asked at sometimes how an art piece or an artist can be displayed by the museum I was mentally displaced. Some believe the artist must have died, or near to death, but I strongly believe phenomenal expressions call for attention. Mature expression , color usage and well articulated composition to me deserve honor. Guggeheim has impressed me in all these parameters and i always feel at home while am there to view arts. Maybe one day soon my works too may get this far in a place I adore! more

Go during an interesting exhibit 2/25/2007

Unfortunately, the permanent collection of the Guggenheim does not live up to its reputation. Very few examples of Monet, Picasso, and other modern artists you would expect to see at a museum of its caliber. The building in itself is an attraction, although it is going through some renovation at the moment. The Guggenheim does bring excellent exhibits, and that is what you should go see. From Aztec culture to architecture, they never disappoint. Pros: Exhibits Cons: Permanent collection not as good as one would expect, pricey more

A must-see for art and architecture lovers. 1/13/2006

You really must take the time to see The Guggenheim while in NYC. The building itself is worth the trip and the ongoing Kandinsky exhibit is worth the price of admission ten times over. Right now, the outside facade is under renovation...which is dissapointing. But there is quite enough going on inside to keep you happy. Allow enough time to see the permanent collection also. Pros: architecture, art, museum shop Cons: rude guards, can get crowded more

give it a try 11/17/2002

It seems to me that the world of art has gotten a bad name from those of you who know very little to nothing about it. I don't understand why people have such a close-minded view of art right now when we're so accepting of other things, but art has extended its parameters and just because some people don't understand it doesn't mean that it's all horrible. Although the special exhibition isn't spectacular, it does have some good things to offer. Instead of going in there with a mind that painting and Impressionism is where art ended, try to understand that there's so much more to art than that. more

That Was Art? 9/17/2002

Except for the permanent display with Picasso, Monet and others, the show was awful. Large screen videos with people just standing there isn't usually considered art. The 3 photos of the underbelly of society (the pregnant woman, the naked crazy mom and the guy with the lawn in his living room) were really good though. Pros: permanent collection, underbelly photos, the building Cons: really bad exhibit more

Great Building, Boring Art 8/25/2002

The star of the show is the Wright building. It's terrific. Most of the museum was devoted to ""Moving Pictures"", which was horrible. What remained of permanent collection was fine, but the building is still the star. Pros: Building, Cafe, Location Cons: Special Exhibit Awful more

Good building design 8/22/2002

I thought the Guggenheim was a good museum. I liked the way the spiraling centre of the museum held the temporary exhibitions, with the permanent collections in rooms off the central area. more

Great wealth of art -- see it. 8/16/2002

If you visit New York and catch any museums, don't miss this one. more

Where's the collection? 8/15/2002

Every other room seemed to be a gift shop. I went to see art, not to buy crap. If you happen to love the exhibit that's there, then great; if you don't, you've just thrown away your money. more

A Landmark that must be seen! 8/5/2002

We were on a short vacation to NYC and had time for one museum visit - without a doubt we knew it had to be the famous Frank Lloyd Wright designed Guggenheim. It's a little confusing to navigate between the original building and the expansion that connects to it. Pros: Historical, Lovely location, Not too expensive Cons: Needs renovating, Confusing floor plan more

Rikki audience members work this gallery 7/11/2002

As as Brit taking my first trip to NYC I was looking forward to visiting the city's famous museums. What a dissapointment. The Guggenheim has a small permanent display and the building is very difficult to find your way around. However the worst thing has to be the staff. I have never experienced such obnoxious people working in a gallery. Whilst looking at the cubist displays all I could hear were the guards shouting at each other about their favourite superhero and calling down to the women in the gift shop. The women in the gift shop were an experience themselves. More suited on Rikki Lake all they did was whine about their intricate love lives and talk to customers as though they were an inconvenience. I couldn't wait to leave this museum. The staff were horrendous though at least they've given me an amusing story to tell friends. Avoid! Pros: staff more

Player Haterz 5/15/2002

People really like to hate on the Guggenheim these days, and its true there's good reason to do so. The global expansion, the blockbuster aesthetic, the dubious payoffs from show subjects like Armani, the patchy permanent collection.... But nevertheless, I kind of like the way the museum has given in to crass commercialism. Some of those blockbuster shows have been fun--the Gehry retrospective was fantastic, Nam June Paik was cool, I even thought the Brazil show was worthwhile solely for the incredible altar they installed. And given that Frank Lloyd Wright's design has always overshadowed the art here, I think this devotion to spectacle is entirely in keeping with the museum's tradition. more
