People really like to hate on the Guggenheim these days, and its true there's good reason to do so. The global expansion, the blockbuster aesthetic, the dubious payoffs from show subjects like Armani, the patchy permanent collection.... But nevertheless, I kind of like the way the museum has given in to crass commercialism. Some of those blockbuster shows have been fun--the Gehry retrospective was fantastic, Nam June Paik was cool, I even thought the Brazil show was worthwhile solely for the incredible altar they installed. And given that Frank Lloyd Wright's design has always overshadowed the art here, I think this devotion to spectacle is entirely in keeping with the museum's tradition.
