Any burger fried fried to order is going to be decent, but these are by no means great burgers. The patties seem to be standard fast food/commercial patties and the accoutrements...

nastiest waitress EVER 9/18/2010

Seating is awful, and ""Betty"" the old waitress is just as nasty as you could ever picture. The food wasn't bad -- but there is NO good reason to be treated so poorly. She acted the same to everyone in there...like she was put out that we bothered her. more

Despite the surly service, worth the trip 7/28/2009

My son and I road tripped from Chicago after seeing an article by Andrew Zimmern. We walked in and being new, was unsure of protocol. The woman at the cash register barked at us to seat ourselves as if we had just offended her by being new. Once seated, waiting for service was oddly long. It isn't a large place, so servers aren't waiting on dozens of patrons. Once the food came, we were floored by the blockbuster flavor. The butter soaks up into the bun and drips down your hands and arms. It isn't health food, nor is it intended to be. Take it for what it is and enjoy! Just don't ask them to act happy about it. Pros: Flavor like nowhere else Cons: How much does a smile cost? more

Best Burger in Town 12/9/2008

I grew up going to Sally's, and I have to say.. anybody else claiming to have ""butterburgers"", ehhem culvers, does not understand the term. However, going to Sally's I would recommend ordering the burger ""easy on the butter."" You'll still get plenty, don't worry. I also highly recommend the pineapple shake. Honestly, I always order the same thing, so I can't enlighten you much more. But If you're looking for great burgers, shakes, and fries that don't resemble anything in a fast food chain then you'll love Sally's. more

Will not come back... 11/30/2008

I expected the 'greatest' burger ever... not so, not so much flavor, just a pile of grease on a bun. Would definitely not waste the time or money to come back. I just wouldn't recommend it. Pros: malt was ok Cons: grease on a bun more

Fantastic food 5/25/2008

Okay, so the other two reviewers can have their opinions, however, they are wrong, wrong, wrong. In this day and age of speed and expections, how can a place like Solly's ever stand up against crappy fast food chains. (And the fries are better than McDonald's--as is every thing else they serve). Let's take the service, it is slow. They make everything the moment you order it (and not the pretend Culvers way does), so the food takes a bit longer to come. They have one cook and ususally one or two wait staff, so you are going to wait, be prepared. Is the food worth the wait, in a word, yes. The burgers are fantastic and if you haven't had a malt or shake, do so. The hidden gem in this establishment is not the often praised burgers (quoted in Hamburger America as having one of the best burgers in America), but it is the breakfast; pancakes to die for (Apple Pancakes are my fav, not on the menu but just ask for them) and potatoes roestti (swiss cheese & onions mixed) is not often found east of Green County. This is place to frequent, where if you actually talk to the wait staff, they are nice and have good stories. Pros: The pancakes. Cons: Plan on the meal taking awhile. Enjoy the lesiure. more

Poor Service, Pretty Decent Food 4/11/2008

After hearing the hype for years, I checked this place out recently. I sat at the counter during what I assumed was a normal weekday lunch time (there were several open stools). The wait staff proceed to totally ignore me for 10 full minutes. They even wiped down the counter in front of me without so much as a hello or any eye contact. The food IS good (better than average), but miniscule in size. McDonald's has better french fries. Would I ever go back? Sure. Would I go out of my way to go back? Never. Kind of a surely wait staff. If I want surely with GREAT food, I'll go to the Billy Goat Pub in Chicago. more

ok 4/15/2007

Burgers were ok, not as good as Kopp's or many other places. After reading many of the other reviews I was disappointed. Prices were a bit high. Service was a bit slow. more

Best Burgers, Best REAL Shakes and Malts; Best French Fries. 7/25/2006

Solly's is the BEST place to get a REAL burger and fries. It still makes shakes and malts in the old fashioned way. You know the silver containers shaking on the green mixer. Butter burgers use lots of real butter. (I haven't been able to eat those, but my memory is good. - they will make it without - but it is a loss.). Wait staff is pleasant and willing to converse. Price got a bit high after the move to the new digs. Two cheeseburgers, Fries and a soda is close to $10. but then again where else can you get real beef, real malts, home baked buns, (try the ""pillows"" or hardrolls too) and waitresses who really seem to be glad your there. Most of the seating is at a W shaped counter with round stools. Lots of communication possible. Lunch time is very crowded and you might have to wait. Or take it to go. Pros: Great food, Dinner atmosphere, great staff Cons: Crowded during lunch. Price higher but worth it. more

An institution since I was a kid 6/13/2005

As with my childhood memories, Solly's is the best burger I have had in the country. The place still serves the same great burgers. Also it is a local restaurant not some chain found in other cities. Pros: A landmark, great food, good service more

Our Favorite Place 6/11/2004

My husband and I travel 20 miles one way each week for a Solly's butter burger. We wouldn't miss the great food and friendly service. It's fun to talk with other customers sitting at the counter, many of whom have been coming in since they were small children. If you don't want a lot of butter, just ask. Pros: Lots of butter, Friendly service more

Mmm..... 10/16/2003

Looking at the list of other top ten Burger joints, I'm appalled that Kopps can be considered for 3 positions. Besides that, Sollys far surpasses Kopps. Sollys takes pride in their burgers and this is proven by the fact that they have many ""regulars"" including me. To visit or live in Milwaukee without eating a Sollys burger is UnAmerican. This is gold ole home town cooking in a fun and pleasant atmosphere. Try it! Pros: Good Selection, Great Atmosphere, Good Value Cons: Parking Lot more

Solly's 10/15/2003

I've been going to this place for a while, a tad disapointed at you people who say cops has the best burger, tisk tisk go here and to freds lakeview in burlington then you will truely know what a burger tastes like. Also Herb Kohl goes here. The burger is always great, the service always great you cant miss out on this, if you live in milwaukee take the drive and have a solly's burger. And then when you want a better burger go to freds lakeview, the only thing is thou some of the workers there (teenagers) dont know how to cook corectly, suggest going at night or on a saturday evening. Pros: Dinner Atmosphere, Consistant burger, GREAT Service Cons: Too much butter , sometimes on the , burger, PACKED A LOT more

Burger Lover 9/9/2003

I haved lived in the Metro Milwaukee area most of my life. I had heard the bravado of so many Solly's fans, that we stopped on a recent Saturday for the first time. I was primed for a really special hamburger, and was really disappointed in the size of the burger for the price. It was tasty, but I ended up ordering a second one because they are way too small for a big burger price. The waitstaff was friendly, the restaurant was busy, but I'm in no hurry to return again. Pros: Friendly, Ample parking, Home-made malts Cons: Where's the beef??, Price small burgers, Wait to be seated. more

solly should be renamed sorry 11/11/2002

If you want to eat a poker chip with butter on it, then this is the place to go. For the 1/8 lb burger they serve, it's well overpriced. Other foods are good but they should stop selling burgers. Pros: parking, friendly Cons: burgers more

Not Bad 11/5/2002

For an expensive burger, this place serves a pretty darn good sandwich!! Pros: Great butter burgers Cons: too expensive more

A-oozing we will go... 11/5/2002

I had to ask what the white ""glump"" was oozing from between the bun and burger. Way too much butter! more
