Editorial review from Citysearch 3/15/2016

I wish I had read these reviews before going to this animal clinic. I used Shelby Animal Clinic years ago (2003-4) when I had a cat and had no problems so that's why I went back. Things have really changed since then. Just having visited Shelby Animal Clinic a few weeks ago with my new puppy I would like to provide comments about my current experience. First of all DO NOT go here if you expect to spend no more than 1-2 hours of your day at the Vet's office. My appointment was at 11 (my son's at 11:30) and I believe we were ready to leave about 2:30 - ridiculous (should have packed a lunch, a drink and my ipad). After the long wait & asking the receptionist what was taking so long, Dr. Z finally came in the room, was apologetic sharing that she was short one key employee that day - she was attentive and spent some time talking with us (most of which would have been more helpful to a first time pet owner though). However, after reading some of the other comments it looks like running behind schedule is the norm for this clinic. I'd like to also add that the whole time we were waiting and then being seen, there was a gentleman waiting patiently in the lobby ONLY to pick his pet up! Also, I'd like to mention that my son paid $325-350 for allergy testing for his 4-yr old dog, was told it would take 10 days for results and they would get back with him. It has now been almost 3 weeks & still no word. His bill was over $700 for this one visit. Now I don't care if you worked for Dr. Z in 1999, if you are a current or past employee or have been going to this clinic all your life, this is poor customer service to say the least. I appreciate the fact that Dr. Z takes time with her patients but, for heaven's sake, don't schedule your patients so closely together if you can't stay on schedule. It sounds like this has been going on for some time now. The longer you make someone wait to see you, the longer they have to fume about your lack of consideration and your time being more important than theirs! Not a good business practice and for that reason, I choose to go elsewhere. more

After reading a few of these reviews, I was shocked that there were so many negative responses. I worked for Dr. Z back in 1999 when she was just starting out and that was one of the most rewarding jobs I ever had prior to joing the military. Dr. Z was always about customer service and ensuring all the pets she took care of had top notch service. For you Dr. Z, you were an awesome boss:) Hope this finds you well... more

I do work here so i'd like to shed some light.(I am fully trained and have worked in all positions) I have to say after reading these comments i'm not surprised to see that there are some negative ones. NOT because this vet is not good. BECAUSE some pet owners really don't get it. They're are a couple of things I would like to explain. FIRST, if you have to wait to get your pet or services it is because people JUST LIKE YOU are asking the SAME questions you are and need help also. You like to have everything explained to you and so do they. SECOND, Dr.Z will NOT prescribe a medication that she does not think will help your pet and YOU have every right to decline services, but she was the one who went to vet school so if she said your pet needs it....... its probably does. THIRD, the clinic is clean. I wouldn't say this unless I knew.. and I do because I am one of the people who sweep, swiffer, and mop at least 3 times a day. ALL surfaces are clean after EVERY use. We scrub our walls multiple times a week. FOURTH, the employees are not ""high school students"". In fact in the 2 years I have been there, there has been ONE high school student. The rest are either adults OR they are college students who are majoring as vet or nurses. And NO Dr.Z is not mean to her employees. It is a BIG deal if you mess up in a medical environment, but Dr.Z has proven to be forgiving but yes you get a ""talking to"" if you don't do your job right. So ""Former Employees"" comment needs to be completed disregarded because that was clearly the person who only had the job for two weeks. ( I have seen that happen and it is just that the employee doesn't try or follow rules). I have NEVER seen anyone cry because of Dr.Z, but I have seen tears shed over lost animals because we care about your loses. LASTLY, I have had PLENTY of people come in and want their dogs broken leg fixed or their cats wound stitched but not want to pay for it to be done. If you don't want to spend money to have your pet healthy you should NOT have a pet. We WANT to help you, but materials and medicine cost money.\r \r Dr.Z and her staffs goal is to keep your pet healthy and safe from diseases as possible. You may have to wait for services, but that is because we are busy (BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE THIS VET). If you have concerns please voice them to us, we want this to be a good experience for us all.\r \r Thank you to all who read this review. I do recommend this vet. It is worth the wait. more

Very horrible place 2 take your animal!! I went there with a friend of mine to c her dog and I will never go back there ever again. It is very dirty, not clean at all and they treat people like crap! It took about 30 to 40 minutes just to ask if we could c him! Totally ridiculous! Also, I was in the process of filling out an application for a job there and I couldn't even fill it out because it was nasty! Again take your animal somewhere else besides here because they act really cold to everyone! more

Shelby animal clinic is a scam! 5/25/2012

Shelby Animal Clinic is NOT where you want to take your family pet! My springer spaniel had gotten hurt in the back yard. Being new to the area, our vet is across town and it was right at 5pm when the incident happened. So i took him to the closest place which happened to be Shelby Animal Clinic.Dr Z said she wanted to keep him overnight so she could start steroid injections.I was hesitant but eventually agreed to it. The bill was to be between 55 and 89 dollars which she gave me on paper. I ended up paying almost 300.00. Then, on the statement i was given,it has a price for every little thing, but yet no price for the revisit. When i brought him back for his revisit, and realized im being charged more,i asked to speak with Dr Z on the matter. She started yelling at me in front of her clients, telling me i dont appreciate her service and would not even let me explain that if shes going to charge more,it should be on the statement just like everything else is. She even stated they needed to more

Excellent Vet Care 5/1/2011

I am a long time client of Shelby Animal Clinic and Dr. Z. She has cared for 4 cats and 2 dogs of mine over the years. My animals have grown from kittens to cats and puppies to seniors while in her care. All through their lives, they have received loving care and treatment by Dr. Z and the staff in her office. Routine care, illness treatment, and emergency situations have all been handled professionally. Dr. Z's medical knowledge and her compassion have contributed to long, happy lives for my pets. more

Shelby Animal Clinic-Dr. Zahumensky 11/5/2010

Shelby Animal Clinic under the ownership and direction of Dr. Marsha Zahumensky has been a life saver in my life. Dr. Z takes whatever time is required to explain what procedures are needed and answer whatever questions that I have. She has cared for all of my dogs for the past twenty (20) + years and I can not say enough good things about the services provided by her clinic. She is a caring individual and will be with you when the "end" has obviously come for a loved pet gently lending her shoulder for you to cry on. If you want and need a competent and qualified vet, I would recommend Dr. Z to anyone. more

Bad place to take your animal ! 9/9/2010

all i have to say is this is not a very nice or pleasant place for your dog or cats to get care from! Its nasty and not sanitary at all! The people that work there mostly high school kids no clue that they are doing in the back and give meds and are not trained to do so. She lashes out on her workers for no reason ..they little mistakes they make she beats them done to nothing but a big mistake they just get a little small talk! you would think it would be the other way around right? If you love your animal please just listen to this and take your animal else where! I promise you will be happier more

as a client 5/4/2010

Shelby animal clinc is the best vet i have ever been to. Yes some times the wait was long because one of the staff memebers explained if you make an appiontment you will get to go first walk ins may have to wait a mintues but they do try to get to you as fast as the can remeber first come first serve. I personal have to say tha shelby animal clinc and it`s onwer Marsha a great nice and friendly. Pros: nice friendly service, great staff Cons: none more

As an employee AND client 10/21/2009

To all of those who are saying the the vet is horrible: I've worked there as receptionist AND vet tech. The reason you have to wait "so long" is because THERE ARE OTHER CLIENTS BEFORE YOU!! We take care of appointments FIRST...walk-ins come AFTER appointments and are first come first serve. People drive from DIFFERENT STATES to use Dr. Zahumensky!! If a client has a "budget," we are MORE than happy to give estimates...this does NOT mean you have to accept everything on the estimate. You can pick and choose what you think is necessary. I have never witnessed the doctor "pushing" products on a client. She may OFFER a product, but that certainly does not mean you have to buy it. more

Horrible Employer 10/16/2009

Dr. Z treats her employees like the poop she stepped in. Many times I came into work to find various employees crying because of the tongue lashings they received because of her personal insecurities regarding her marriage or herself. She is convinced her employees are having affairs with her partner. She talks down to her employees as if they are all retarded. She can't even keep other veterinarians in her practice with her. Pros: None more

Rude, cold, uncaring and callous 2/27/2009

Our dog was ran over by a car. We took her to Shelby Animal Clinic, as they were the closest available clinic open at 5 p.m. My husband was chastised by Marsha Zahumensky, (vet),for not bringing our dog to her clinic for the past 4-5 years, even making the comment that it was "obvious she's been somewhere, she has her rabies tag." After 2 x-rays, it was determined that Stella's spinal cord was severed and she must be put down. BEFORE this; however, my husband had to endure yet more judgment/critisism from Marsha because he did not have $199.16 cash on him. Pros: None Cons: Rude, callous, very cold-hearted more

I'd Find the Next Closest Vet If I Were You 10/4/2008

I was not very satisfied with either the service or pet care at this vet's office. I took two cats in with one needing shots and the other having an ailment that needed drastic care. I was told I could come by and pick them both up. The day I showed up I waited an hour and a half to find out that the sick one needed surgery. I then left her there for the rest of that week and went back to wait another hour and a half to get two minutues with the vet in which she tried to load me up with all the pet food and medicine she could sell me. This vet is all about prescribing anything she can (she even has a video constantly playing that shows what medications you can get for your pets). There is no "quick pick up" for a pet. Be ready to spend the good part of an afternoon here if you take your pet to this clinic. Pros: Convenient to get to Cons: Too much medication being prescribed and awful customer service more
