DO NOT RECOMMEND. Diagnosed after one visit and no history taken. Staff extremely rude and ignorant. Dr. Shafa had me on 8 different medications at one time, which made me gain a tremendous amount of weight, and turned me into a zombie. He kept adding and adding meds.. My quality of life suffered as a result of seeing this doctor. Yeah, he listens -- he listens to people tell their life stories for 45 minutes - while you're sitting in the waiting room, as he has no concept of time and does not seem to care that he has 5 people waiting for him. There is no computer system at all, and everything is done via old school (old-fashioned files, and old-fashioned date book with double and triple booked appointments). I went though hell as a result of seeing this doctor. You want to spend your days waiting between 3 and 8 hours if you take him on as your doctor. There are certainly more competent doctors out there, with a more professional staff. I'm sorry I wasted all those hours waiting. Happy to say, I have a new doctor, and am in great shape as a result!! more

I love Dr.Shafa he is a great doctor. He has helped my husband a lot and he is very good at his job. He makes him feel relaxed and supported and always listens and takes in to consideration to what he says. However, the receptionist, Tracy, has a terrible attitude and is unprofessional and honestly she throws the whole vibe of the entire office off. If I worked there I would have her fired, I cant believe the way she talks to patients, its pathetic. It makes me very angry when the first person I have to look at when I walk into the office has a personality like hers, makes me want to just walk right out of there. Also, there is typically a long wait but Dr.Shafa is such a good doctor it is worth every minute. I recommend the doctor just not the receptionist ! Hire better personnel ! more

I've gone to psychiatrists most of my life and this is by far the worst. The staff are extremely rude, I'm asked to pee in a cup when there is absolutely no reason for me to do so (and no other psychiatrist has ever asked this off me). I was also given no explanation of why I should urinate for them (they just expected me to do it).\r \r I've had to wait between 2 and 5 hours at a time to see someone. I was seeing the nurse practitioner for a while, and when I showed up for my last appointment I was then told (very rudely) that I was seeing Dr. Shafa. My appointment card had his nurse's name on it--I had no idea I was seeing him. Oh, and they didn't tell me this until I was actually being ushered into his office.\r \r When I asked the nurse practitioner for symptoms of lithium toxicity, she laughed and wouldn't tell me, as if I would use that knowledge to somehow harm myself. It really isn't hard to google, first of all. Second of all, I wanted to know so that I could keep myself healthy. I also have a degree in psychology, and thought that I could talk to her on a professional level (which I have been able to do with other mental health professionals). Obviously, I was wrong. Oh, and knowing from working in the mental health industry, if a patient asks you that kind of question you are OBLIGATED to answer. You can only make exceptions in extreme cases and I wasn't one of them. \r \r When I saw Dr. Shafa he was not overly knowledgeable. He wanted to talk to me about my sleep patterns (which are the best they've ever been) instead of adjusting my medications (which I need). Also in the three months I've been going to his practice he went on two separate vacations, both of which were medical conferences. Instead of spending money on conferences, he should be working to clean his office (which is extremely dirty), hire more (friendlier) staff and at least buy comfortable chairs (seeing as his patients are always made to wait more than 30 minutes). \r \r I am looking for a new psychiatrist because honestly, I have never been this poorly treated in my life. Thinking of going to Doctor Shafa's office for treatment? I assure you, your quality of life will not improve. more

This dr worries the living daylights out of me 5/21/2012

A good friend of mine is seeing Dr Shafa. Instead of treating the medical problem she is experiencing he just keeps throwing more medications at her. Ones that should not be taken together!!!! I don't know this dr personally but I am worried for my friends well being and her life. Do not go to this dr for any of the issues he says he is an expert in. He is a pill pusher with a degree in medicine. I hope he gets investigated. Doctors do not see patients between 6 and 8 at night. What is he hiding that he can not just operate during the day? more

Excellence in Medicine 2/26/2012

Dr. Shafa is a wonderful physician. He is completely compassionate and caring. You have to understand that treating mental illness and/or substance abuse is very complex. Dr. Shafa treats the whole person. Your time with him is yours to get better. Waiting for your turn is worth it. Many Dr's today don't give their patients the time of day. Dr. Shafa is extremly knowledgeable of the medication he prescribes. I am a healthcare professional and Dr. Shafa has saved my life. Thank- you Dr. Shafa! more

Experience was a complete nightmare 7/29/2011

After reading the reviews on Dr. Shafa I couldnt help but sign up here and to put my words out there also. I too was misdiagnosed for bi-polar and was put on a dangerous drug called Geodon which I could only take at night because it would make me pass out. This doctor never asked me any questions about my past, or any questions at all and just assumed I was bi-polar. He has no clue what he is doing and does NOT take the time to diagnose you...because of how the medication made me feel which was suicidal, depressed, and lost about 30 lbs, I was treated at a mental hospital for 5 days and was seen by a different psychiatrist who prescribed me what I should have been on. This doctor needs to have his license taken away from him permanently and if I could provide anybody with anymore information, don't hesitate to let me know...it would be my pleasure to do whatever it takes for this man to go down all the way more

Geodon-Deadly side effects-You wouldn't LISTEN to me 1/14/2011

I was put on 160 mg. of Geodon by Dr. Shafa of Milford, MA for Bipolar Mania. I informed him immediately of the DEADLY side effects I was having, such as sleeping while trying to swallow food, severe vomitting, not remembering ANY conversations and stumbling during the day, not to mention I was unable to drive or cook. I called him and asked HOW to taper off this drug. He told me to KEEP taking 160 mg. and my body will get use to it. WRONG DOC, bad call. He was mad at me because it's been a year and a half and he has been UNSUCCESSFUL in treating my condition. I had to act on my own immediately. I called my P.C.P. and told him what what happening. He put me on a low dose, 20 mg. once a day to TAPER OFF this DANGEROUS Drug! There's someone that's concerned, my P.C.P. Dr. Shafa schedules 3 patient's every 15 minutes, therefore the wait time to see him is 3-6 hours, SORRY YOUR NOT WORTH IT ! Let your ego go and try to LISTEN when someone is telling you about DEADLY side effects. Someone like you should be PUT OUT OF BUSINESS, maybe that would save a few lives. ADVICE TO ALL: Don't go to Dr. Shafa !!!!!!!!!! He treats everyone the same. E-mail me if you want more information. Remember ""let your own body be the judge"" more

Not a great experience 5/5/2010

In crisis and called Dr. Shafas office for help. The secretary was insesitive, somewhat rude. At 60 she requested my entire life's medical records. i indicated that my last 'breakdown' was in '87 and she could not be clear as to what the Dr. needed. Was more worried about getting sued. Insulted and dissapointed to the max. made an appointment for June 8th 2010.. then found an office that really knows how to deal with the 'clientele' that calls. Fired the Dr. before I began, \r \r I do not reccomend. Also too long a wait and could care less if it was emergent. Rude Office!!\r \r Her attitude did not contribute or even come close to handling folks in pain with a modicum of sensitivity and as a result her boss lost a patient. Pros: none- never made it to see Dr. Cons: Rude, rude, insensitive secretary more

I thank God everyday for people like Dr. Shafa. 3/4/2009

Dr. Shafa is a kind and gentle man who will take the time to evaluate you and then work with you to find the best treatment option. You are in good hands. You only have to observe how he greats his patients and interacts with his staff to know this is a man with a higher purpose in life who is there to help you improve your condition. He tries to help as many as he can and as a result sometimes you have to wait. His services are very much in demand but I can tell you from my own personal experience if you need something more from him he will meet that need. I thank God everyday for people like Dr. Shafa. He is helping so many, many people some who others would have given up on. He fights for the best treatment for all of his patients and he works tirelessly. My life is certainly better for having met this man. Pros: convient locations and times. Cons: you may have to wait more

Great Doctor. Very Nice Man. Very Long Wait! 9/2/2008

I have been seeing Dr. Shafa for over a year now. He is a very kind man and very smart. He also is one of the only doctors who does the naltraxone implants in the area. He is definitly the best doctor for substance abuse no questions asked. The only down side to Dr. Shafa is that if you have an 11am appointment so do 5 other people and everytime I go in I am waiting anywhere from 3 to 7 hours. The wait is frustraiting but I keep going back and so do many other people. I only have to drive 5 minutes to his office but some people there drive several hours and still don't mind waiting. So if you have patience he is the best doctor to see. I would give a 5 star rating if it wasn't for the long waits and the small waiting room. I think anyone would tell you the same info. Hope this review was helpful. Pros: Great guy, very smart, very fair, i feel very comfortable. Cons: The waiting time and room. Dont make plans for the day of your appointment. more
