Nostalgia - Worlds best burgers 10/13/2006

I spent my teens and twenties in Manchester and have been eating at Shady Glen off and on for over 50 years. Used to grab my girl friend and go get burgers and then the drive-in movie (no longer there) on Friday nites. Took my kids when I got married. Even they have the memories of Shady Glen, especially in summer when we did our sunday drive. FANTASTIC cheeseburgers and out of this world shakes. It is still a great place to take a family, it's clean, good service and it's still like ""the old days'. Eat at Shady Glen and it'll become a habit. I dont even know what I can add to these other reviews, other then I agree with every positive thing! Excellent food, service, and ambience. I've been going there for years and I've never had a bad experience! Just remember to bring cash because they dont accept credit cards. Beat the wait! 7/8/2005

Ever since I was a little girl I've loved going to Shady Glen. My love for the crispy cheese, ice cream and service influenced me to pick up an application. I'm now a waitress there and I'm really putting up a review in respose to people saying it's over crowded. The best nights to go for dinner if you don't have time to wait for a booth or you don't want to sit on the stools are Monday-Wednesday. I highly recommend the cheese burgers and any type of milkshake. Hope to see you there! more

A Yummy, Yummy Treat 9/22/2003

I heard about the fried cheese and was a little worried until I tasted it. YUMMY! Five years later I still yearn for the tasty treat. The homemade pumpkin ice cream was also a nice autumn treat. Time stands still at SG (except prices) 4/22/2003

Shady Glen isn't ""retro"" exactly... it just hasn't changed since it was established after World war II. This is good news for diners, because it makes for a truly authentic ""old-fashioned"" dining experience. That, and they haven't tampered with their fantastic cheeseburgers and onion rings. And their Minestrone soup is a MUST. The only downside? It's not a lot of food for the money, and the waitstaff is really more concerned with speed than congeniality sometimes. even tho i moved from connecticut years ago, cravings for shady glen hamburgers and ice cream still haunt me. black raspberry ice cream served in dishes on paper doillies, winged cheeseburgers and elves painted on walls! i wish they had a website. The Best Fried Cheese 1/5/2003

I have grown up visiting Shady Glen shops. & I must say that they DO put out the best Cheeseburger for several hundres miles. If you're going there expect to wait for a booth, but it's all worth the wait. Tip: Get a extra order of fried cheese for yourself, so that you don't have to steal it from your burger. The trade secret here is that crispy cheese; just HOW do they do it? Nowhere in the world have I found a cheeseburger like the Bernice Original. Walking the boardwalk in Delray Fla. several years ago ran into folks from Manchester who wished Shady Glen would open a southern branch; I agree! Can't beat the cheeseburg and a chocolate shake. I made my debut at Shady Glen at age 2 months way back in 1954; been going there ever since expept for the time I lived in Palm Beach Fla. This is my childhood favorite. Don't knock it. Admit that the cheese is the best-tasting thing you've ever had! Let's face it.......The burger by itself is O.K. What makes it a great burger is the thing they do with the cheese. I still don't know how they do that. The atmosphere is the greatest. It's fifties retro but not intended to be. That's just the way things are at Shady Glen. Spotless stainless steel and formica, Groomed cooks in uniform and hat, pretty waitresses at your table in seconds with a smile. It reminds me of the old Texaco commercials on The Milton Berle Show. AND....The cole slaw is the best in the world...no kidding. Pros: CHEESE, Cole Slaw, Ice Cream Cons: Wait, Cost more

The All American meal: The Bernice (sp?) Burger, fries, Vanilla milk shake. For cheese lovers, the fried cheese on the Bernice Burger is incredible. And the vanilla milk shakes are made with real vanilla syrup and they're world-famous, igh butter-fat content, homemade ice cream. The ambience of a 1950's soda shop, a la ""Back to the Future."" Rude, crude, but not lewd...are the waitresses at the Manchester Shady Glen. The food was decent, but not great, but the service was soooo bad that I would not return when a free meal was offered. Pros: ice cream variety, parking Cons: service, portion size, smells more
