I have a 64 gigabyte media card in my camera. It had to be in my camera for a year until it was finally full and it was time to sync it up with my desktop pc. I removed the media card and inserted it in and it said it was corrupted. Thousands of photos of my vacations, children, events and others were on the media card. I left my laptop on the TV tray totally forgetting to put it away and during the night my dog must have knocked it over. I hate computers! I have only had this one for a year and when I turned it on, OMG what noise it made. I shut it down and tried again and it was getting worse. Our business has a RAID 3 data recovery system in operation. I took my computer to Secure Data Recovery Services, in San Jose CA, when my system got trashed last week. I tried to unzip an archive that turned out to be a Zip Bomb (look it up). It disabled Symantec and made my system unbootable, and all my data was gone. I am lucky to have encountered Secure Data Recovery Services at last, after having been kicked around from one tech repair center to another. Problem is, no one wants to assume the risk of doing data recovery. It's not in the contract for tech support, and hard drive manufacturers are only willing to replace the drive with a working one. Data is precious to people, which is why nobody but the specialty firms who deal with nothing BUT data recovery are the only ones willing to do it. Secure Data Recovery Services was able to recover a lot of the data we asked for within 2 days of our coming to them. It wasn't cheap, but data recovery never is. In fact, there was a company who gave us a low quote that we turned down - it was very suspicious, and I know that the data recovery business is chock full of scammers. I recommend that others do the same if they encounter something similar. We were pleased with the whole operation, and found Secure Data Recovery Services to be very professional about their services. They called us often to update us on the status. Our server was configured to archive and sync all our critical data to an offsite storage system in a facility in another state. This would have been a proper and safe way to backup our data - had the data actually been saved in a readable format!!! You see, we never had anything bad happen until a week ago, so we never really needed to restore from any of our backups. We just kept backing up and thought everything was dandy, until our server died right under our noses one fine morning and we needed to get back up and running STAT. So we quickly switched to our failsafe server, downloaded our latest backup archive from our out-of-state repository, and tried to unpack it and -- IT DIDN'T WORK!!!! The archive COULDN'T BE READ!! We phoned Secure Data Recovery Services of San Jose and told them this was an EMERGENCY - we needed to recover either the unreadable archive, or the data from our failed server, whichever, but we needed it NOW. What happened next I remember very clearly, because when you're bleeding money by the second, you tend to remember these things. Within 20 minutes, a courier came to pick up the server and haul it back to their facilities. Half an hour later, they phoned us to tell us they found the issue with the server, that they would be able to recover the data very soon. It took an hour for the next phone call, which was a very painful wait at the time, but looking back now, that was remarkably short. They were finished! We got a new, identical drive back with the data on it, which they helped us install into our server on site for us. We were back in business, just two hours after the incident! There are two morals in this story. Backup, backup, backup! Well, what if you don't? Seriously, a show of hands please, how many people actually back up their entire computers on a daily basis? That's what I thought. My laptop croaked on me, dead as a doornail, and I wanted to recover my old school documents from it. (I mean my documents from school, which happened to be old, not ""old school"" documents like blueprints for the Model-T or something? just wanted to clarify, moving on now). I had a USB stick that got bent while in use and a lot of important files were stored on it. This was convenient to carry, it was always on me by my side & ready to use, so when it got bent my first reaction was to slightly readjust it and bend it the other way so I can quickly connect and copy out all the data. My hard drive suddenly out of no where, without any signs or warnings would no longer power on nor detect. This was strange to me because I used it the night before just like I do day in and day out. I take every precaution, even safely remove disconnect the drive prior to unplugging the usb cable (this is an external drive). My immediate reaction was that the casing on the hard drive which connects the disk to the usb adapter crapped out, hence all I would need to do is buy a new casing and plug the drive in thru there.
