Editorial review from Citysearch 11/1/2013

The reviews the wife and I read had us all a drooling at the door, but inside things were a little different. The service was pretty efficent even though they were plowing threw a packed resturant. We had the screendoor special, the Catfish was very tasty as was red beans and rice. The pork chops were a little dry and the gumbo and jambalyia were sad sides better left alone. We did not try the chicken, but it looked quite tasty. The shrip and grits were a hit as well. My advice if you go, get your appitizers early as it's likely to be a long wait till you get your entrees. I hope the food gets a little better, but I think we will try screendoor again.\r \r Mark more

Long waits unless you are there before 5/26/2013

Long waits unless you are there before it opens. Great chicken n waffles... Couldn't finish it. Worth a trip. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 12/14/2012

I thankfully didn't get the chicken and waffles because it was WAY over the top too much food for one person, though it looked delicious. I ended up getting a trio of side dishes and that was more than enough. The wait, even fairly early in the morning was still a half hour, that's how good their food is. Atmosphere couldn't be any quainter. Service friendly...but busy! more

love this place! good food more

Great food. Good service. It would be 6/3/2012

Great food. Good service. It would be nice if they could better manage their clientele to have more realistic wait times. Often, the lines are so long that it's a deterrent to eat there. more

We like Screen Door. Lots of reviews 2/26/2012

We like Screen Door. Lots of reviews here to the contrary. The staff are .... nondescript. Not rude, not welcoming. The wait, usually long, 30 min to an hour. While the food isn't reminiscent of YOUR MOM'S southern cookin, it is Southern compared to Oregon cooking and we've always been very pleased with the food, the drinks, and the staff, and if not raining, we are more than willing to wait the 60 min to get a table or to sit at the counter. We will always eat at Screen Door when we have the time :) more

1 star would be generous. These 1/14/2012

1 star would be generous. These people are dirt bags. I call asking for a reservation. They tell me seating starts at 5.30 no reservation. Be here with your party or you won't be seated. We show up on time, with our COMPLETE party. Turns out they open the doors before 5.30 (thanks for not telling us that), and if you're ahead in line with an incomplete party they'll hold a table indefinitely until they show up... forcing everyone else to wait in their pathetic waiting area. So we were told it was an hour.5 wait with several huge tables empty and unsat when we finally gave up hungry and disappointed. I don't care how good the food should be if the service is this unreliable walking in the front door. If you want great service and southern food go to Irving St Kitchen in the Pearl. more

I just DON'T LIKE RUDE PEOPLE DOESN'T MATTER HOW BUSY !! 8/7/2011

This place has to have some of the most rude hostess's I have ever had the experience of speaking to. They are busy busy busy I understand I am a busy person too but that is no excuse to mistreat customers. I can't stand giving my money to people who have no common courtesy. There waiting list is like letting out parolee's its super strict no exceptions you could have been eating there for years and they would still treat you like they are doing you a favor. THIS IS NOT AN EXCLUSIVE NIGHT CLUB IN LA!! It's breakfast in Portland make it enjoyable and if you can't handle the traffic on Burnside open another restaurant or you will have dissatisfied critics like me. more

Perfection 8/3/2011

My friend who convinced me to move here suggested I go. After waiting almost 45 minutes for a table, we finally sat down. The tables are crowded and noisy but the service was excellent and the food was really good. I would say well worth the wait! more

One of my favorite restaurants! 7/12/2011

I absolutely love the food at Screen Door! If you are looking for recommendations as to what to order, I can only recommend a few items as they are my absolute favorite and I don't venture away from them at all! Why would I when they are so delicious?\r \r Starters - Hushpuppies & Pimiento Cheese.....so good!\r \r Hot Plate - Crispy Fried Chicken w/Mashed Potatoes & Tasso Ham Gravy (it comes with collard greens but I don't like those so I always give them to my friend who does). I love that the fried chicken is boneless. The gravy is delicious. \r \r Dessert - BAN-OFFEE PIE! If you've never had ban-offee pie and you love banana desserts you should definitely try this! It's really good. I occassionally find myself ordering a slice to go as well. \r \r The only negative that I can say about Screen Door is that you do have to wait in line for a table, as much as I dislike that, I still do it every time I go there. They take reservations for parties of 6 or more which is nice.\r \r Enjoy!\r more

Southern food...Really? 5/31/2011

I went with a group of peole to the Screen Door on Sunday. I was excited...at first. I saw the line and thought that I was in for a treat. I don't know what part of the south this food hails from, but it wasn't like any southern cousine I have ever eaten.\r I ordered the Screen Door plate so that I could try several things. The red beans and rice were bland, the Jambalaya was hot with out being tasty and the best thing about the pork chop was the hot sauce I added and the cornbread was dry. I sampled a few other menu items from my dinner companions. The trout was pretty decent (NW cousine to me) the mac and cheese was passable. The asparagus was prepared quite well. The only thing that tasted of New Orleans was the Hurricane. I wanted to try the chicken, but the pieces were unidentifiable and looked dry when it was cut into.\r I was so upset that I had to wait for over 1/2 an hour for such a mediocre meal. \r I was offered dessert, which I could have eaten because I was not full; but I was afraid of what might come out of the kitchen and I wanted to get out of the restaurant before I aged another year. more

Not so great food, long wait, bad service 2/25/2011

Food: The one item that I liked in most southern restauarants is Jambalaya... the Jambalaya here wasn't good (not rich in flavor)... We were a group of 6, so we got to taste several of their items... I liked the appetizers (Hushpuppies, fried okra was decent). The Creole Jambalaya was okay, nothing to brag about, however the Crispy Fried Buttermilk-battered Chicken was good. The trout pecan was decent as well. Comparing to Montage restaurant, it does not even come close (fried chicken was the only one better in Screendoor). The service is quite ordinary, maybe it was just this server that waited on us. The wait is quite long (more than an hour on Friday evening). Parking was easy to find (on Friday evening). more

Good food, long waits 7/12/2010

I've been to Screen Door for dinner twice and breakfast once. All meals were pretty good-- impressive enough to bring out of town guests. The drinks are especially unique and flavorful. The downside? It's almost always a longer wait and the service can be hit and miss. Pros: Different menu than most PDX spots Cons: Long waits, sparse menu more

YUM! YUM! YUM! 5/16/2010

I LOVE the Screen Door! The long waits are redeemed by the amazingly fresh food, the more than courteous staff and a clean and comforting atmosphere! The breakfasts are to die for and the dinners fill you up just right!! I have eaten here with my children, with just myself and my husband and even in a large group, and every single time the service has been the same....PERFECT!\r \r If you are looking for great breakfast, or a deliciously filling dinner, The Screen Door will provide!!\r Pros: EVERYTHING Cons: Long Seating time...but well worth it! more

Wait was worth it 5/2/2010

As a party of 2 on a Saturday night, we arrived at Screen Door ready for a wait. However, the wait for 2 was long compared to larger parties. Without noting this to the restaurant, they noticed how long we waited and made up for it. Our friendly server delivered our delicious food in minutes and the fabulous host checked on us multiple times to ensure we had a positive experience. We appreciated the extra effort, and it is the primary reason we will return. I typically go to the Pearl for dining so I loved the inexpensive pricing at Screen Door (most expensive item was $16). The decadent chocolate velvet cake and ice cream was a great way to end the night, yummy! Pros: Attentive service Cons: No reservations more

favorite southern food 4/13/2010

I adore the Screen Door. The food is absolutely fantastic(this is coming from someone who lived in the south), and the portions are gigantic. I've gone there both for dates and in groups and all of my experiences have been great. The only bump in the road is the wait. They don't take reservations so you have to sit for about an hour on the weekends, but it's totally worth it. Just show up before you get hungry. :) Pros: amazing food, upbeat atmosphere, huge portions Cons: the wait more

Always a good experience 4/7/2010

If you are looking to try something different this is a great option. Every time I have beed the food has been great. There is always a variety of foods on the menu. Great for everyone! Pros: food and service Cons: sometimes a wait to get in more

Great Comfort Food 4/5/2010

This was my first visit and it was pretty great. Because they are usually so busy we arrived about 20 minutes before they opened and there was a fairly long line even then. When seated it took about 15 minutes for our waitress to even take our drink order which was frustrating. The dinner menu was small with few vegetarian options and being a vegetarian that made it hard for me. My boyfriend had the smoked BBQ brisket which he said was excellent! I however had the screen door plate. You can choose any three sides or anything from their local/organic menu or a combination. While this is a good way to try several different things, the combination of different flavors was a bit overwhelming. I did enjoy their creamy grits and their very tasty cornbread. And I would highly recommend their Scarlett O'Hara Number 2 cocktail! Pros: Great atmosphere, delicious and fun Cons: long wait, small dinner menu more

Amazing southern food 2/21/2010

The food is definitely good, the atmosphere fun and the wait not as bad as I had heard it would be... the hostess could have been friendlier, for sure. Pros: fun, busy, different Cons: Rude hostess!! more

Took the fam and loved it! 2/3/2010

Found this restaurant through Citysearch and was very happy. Took my teens, wife and sister (who had just flown in) around 8pm and had no wait. Food was fun and different and excellent! We brought a lot of food home, sharing a meal would be a good idea. Probably more of a $$ for price, meals are around $15 a plate. Fun people watching too; I felt a long way from Beaverton. :)\r \r One hint, place is on EAST Burnside between 23rd and 24th. I went the wrong direction at first and had to trek all the way across town but it was worth it. Pros: Food, fun, loud, busy, price Cons: Loud, busy, parking more

Owner Message
  • Screen Door presents a celebration of southern cuisine as experienced by southern natives from the quintessential hearty fare to the everyday food gathered from the garden.

The central concept is making use of the similar rich bounty of local fresh produce found here in the Northwest that is sometimes taken for granted in the south.

Screen Door serves local and organic produce and meats everyday and fosters the concept of maintaining the connection between farm and plate.
