Good Martini Spot 9/22/2009

I love the Spider Roll and the Dragon Roll. I always sit at the bar when I come here and it's good fast service. \r \r They make great drinks and the sushi is so fresh with great flavor. The bartenders are always really friendly and keep you full and happy. \r \r There is plenty of parking for all. It's a darker more intimate setting inside and plan on spending a little more here, but it's all worth it. Cons: A little on the spendy side more

Good food 8/15/2009

Very popular restaurant, but excellent food. If you go there before 6 p.m, they will give you 25% off, otherwise, the prices are pretty high. They had a visual on their dining table showing a certain type of sushi. Both my daughter and myself decided to order it. In the visual, it showed 3 very tasty looking crab rolls, but when our order came, we both got 2 small rolls. How deceiving. I did not complain since we had the 25% discount, but customers beware! Always ask how many pieces you get when ordering sushi. It varies from restaurant to restaurant. \r This same restaurant chain on Oahu was much fancier and the portions were larger--or so they may have seemed compared to their two small crab rolls for $10.00.\r Pros: Food, service Cons: Very busy--make reservations way ahead more

YIKES 4/20/2009

OK, so being from LA I will admit that I could be spoiled by the high quality sushi. During a recent trip to Maui, was very excited to see that Sansei had a 50% off deal between 5-6 pm on sun/mons. We stood in a line like Disneyland before being seated. Ordered the crispy calamari with 'spicy cocktail sauce'-- the calamari was not crispy, but rather chewy (overcooked) and the cocktail sauce not spicy, but rather ketchup-y. My date and I split 3 rolls between us, the speciality tuna sashimi roll was, I thought good, but my date disagreed. We were both very unhappy with the Spider roll. Being avid sushi eaters we pinpointed that the rice is the culprit-- their rice stinks (tasteless and dry) and their fish/seafood isn't fresh. So next time, we'll save our sushi for Los Angeles. Also, they added a 17% automatic gratuity for a party of 2. As a former server, I was insulted by the autograt and probably would have left 20% otherwise. That said, I bet those waiters clean up since the autograt was nicely included amongst the food items.\r Thanks but no thanks Sansei. Pros: 50% off Cons: poor quality more

Best Sushi in Kihei 10/18/2008

Sansei's is a family place that is always busy every weekend no matter whether it's high or low season for the tourist. There's not a lot of Sushi in Kihei so it's easy to say this place is dakine compared to the other restaurants around. Pros: Great location, good for kids and large groups Cons: The wait, it's loud and busy more

Bad service trumps average food 6/1/2008

We recently ate at the Kapalua Sensei location- It was highly recommended and we were really excited. I am sad to say it was pretty disapointing- The hostess was perky enough, however our server Michelle wasn't interested in providing hardly any service, hospitality, eye contact, let alone Aloha Spirit- We are in maui after all.... The food was generally good quality except for the very sinewy Ahi Tuna in their highly publicized crispy panko crusted tuna roll, ( save that to chop up for spicy tuna please) and what about the fact that serving farmed salmon as sashimi is really just like eating a whole bunch of antibiotics- When I enquired about an glass of riesling to go with some spicier food I was told with an uncaring shrug that there was only 1 on the list- ( normal, but you don't have to be rude about it- I'd just like to know what it tastes like without any attitude please) My dining companions' beer glass was removed from the table with half a beer left in the bottle still....well maybe that was more appropriate. It was basically the service I'd expect from a dive bar anyway. P. S. can we talk about the overabundance of the Thai Sweet Chili sauce? It's Thai- not Japanese!!! \r Pros: If you just have to have some sushi without leaving Kapalua Cons: Lazy, bad service, lots of thai chili sauce..... :( more

Excellent Sushi! 3/11/2008

This place was a bulls-eye for both my husband and I. First off, our Australian waitress was great! She let us keep the menu at the table so we could order as we went along, and she made some great suggestions. My husband doesn't eat sushi beyond a little bit of tuna, but he struck out and tried a couple of things, and liked it! The panko-crusted ahi sashimi roll was out of this world! The yaki-maki was my second favorite. Everything was a success for me except the dynamite shrimp (which, in it's defense, most people love. I just didn't enjoy it much.) They have excellent options besides the sushi for those sushi-weary patrons. My husband had the jerk-chicken, and he cleaned up his plate. All in all, it was a great fit for us big-city people far from home. Good food, a nice crowd, and a great looking place. Kudos to this establishment. Pros: Panko crusted ahi sushi roll, the service Cons: Bathroom location (that's pretty scary) more

Creative Sushi in Kihei! 10/11/2006

We splurged and got Chef Omakase's set menu for two. What a treat! Amazing, creative dishes with European and Thai fusion like Panko covered Seared Ahi Tuna in an amazing soy wasabi butter sauce! Truffled Ravioli with lobster and blue crab. So worth the seventy bucks. Cons: long wait more
