My bf and I went to Alma on a weeknight. We ordered a lovely bottle of wine and 3 course tasting. Server never came back to check on any of our food, not one course, until we wer...

Well done 7/16/2003

Great atmosphere, nice menu and pleasant staff. Apps were nice, although the oysters were a bit expensive...the chicken liver pate was tops. Entree's were very nice, good portion sizes, artfully presented and nice complementary flavors on the palate. Desserts were solid. Highly recommended. Pros: atmosphere, staff, tastes Cons: smallish menu more

wonderful meal 3/9/2003

Had dinner on a Friday night, early. Server was very good - knowledgeable, attentive, but unobtrusive. Had halibut with aromatic vegetables and was cooked well. Partner had roast chicken with butternut squash - yum. Appetizers were butternut squash soup - a little thin, but well flavored and partner's shrimp appetizer was very good. Dessert was a cheese plate with an excellent triple creme brie and chocolate terrine - a bit chalky but good quality chocolate. Wine was a Vacqueyras which went well with food, though a bit acidic on its own. All in all, a great meal. I'd go again. Freshness, service, atmosphere all a plus. Felt very welcomed and relaxed. Pros: good service, freshness of food, great dessert Cons: parking, price, for some more

Disappointed 2/16/2003

The bartender and server were a bit 'on another planet' Also, I was highly highly disappointed in the value of my meal. The Japanese fish entree ran $22-24 and when ordered I received two pieces of fish nary the size of golf balls. Very disappointing as the presentation was nothing special. My husband got the prime rib and that was a very generous portion with lots and lots of flavor...I'd recommend this. Another disappointment was that the cranberry, pear, apple crumble dessert, was more full of prunes (or were they figs?) than the title fruits! I was a bit shocked...I was hoping to have a dessert bursting with cranberrys, pears and apples. I didn't order a starter salad, although I saw many brought out and they looked good. I'm happy to pay the price for a great meal, however, unfortunately for the price/value, I don't think I'd go back. Pros: Prime Rib, Service Cons: Fruit Crumble, Value for price, Service more

Hidden Treasure 2/2/2003

Where in the Twin Cities would you least expect to find a culinary treasure like Restaurant Alma? One of my guesses would have been University Ave SE on the west side of 35W!! To be honest, Alma's street parking and the lack of a full bar are their only negatives. The atmosphere is ""neighborhoody"" and comfortable. The food is outstanding - the duck breast and confit possibly the best I've tasted. I rank Alma right alongside Vincent, although the above-mentioned detractions result in a slightly lower overall score. Pros: Excellent Food, Nice Wine List, Good Value Cons: Beer and Wine Only, Parking more

Good food better luck with your waiter 1/31/2003

The food was very very good. Starters were both very aesthetically pleasing and tasty. The dessert wasn't that great. I would like the restaurant a lot more if our waiter was a little better trained in time and timing management. He first forgot our order (for just 2 people). It wasn't even a busy night. Later I had to call him over at least 5 minutes after he had dropped off the dessert menu. All the while he had only one other table to service. The portions were relatively small for the prices. But did I say the food was really really good ? ;-) Pros: Good food Cons: So so service, Skip Dessert, A bit pricy more

Favorite 11/4/2002

We have visited Alma on numerous occasions, be it for dinner or just a cheese plate and a glass of wine at the end of a evening - we yet to be disappointed!! Keep up the GREAT work! Cons: Parking more

Great service, amazing food, romantic 8/26/2002

I recently visited Restaurant Alma for the first time. We were seated immediately, and our server (Nat) was remarkably patient and knowledgeable about the restaurant, the kitchen, the wine list and what would suit our tastes. The escarole salad with balsamic and white truffle viniagrette was a terrific starter. The seared sashimi tuna was expertly done, and the lemon pudding cake was truly a perfect blend of tart, sweet, smooth and moist. This restaurant is a must for anyone tired of franchises. We cancelled reservations next weekend at D'Amico (our favorite standby) because we thought we'd have more fun here, and because the desserts cannot be beat. Pros: sumptuous menus, fresh ingredients, knowledgeable staff Cons: parking can be tricky more

Tonights Special 8/23/2002

We love Restaurant Alma. My only concern was that they were out of 3 of the daily specials on our last visit. I would understand if it was really late on a week night, but it was 8PM on a Saturday. we managed, but 2 of the specials were fish entrees and some our companions do not eat chicken or beef. Other than that, it is a great place and I hope they keep it up, Just get more fish. Pros: food, ambiance Cons: running out of specia, parking more
