On two occasions we took our bunnies to seek help and had a terrible experience (thankfully we found a much better pet hospital by now). We never got to see the veterinarian, Dr. Mitchell just called to give his diagnosis over the phone. \r \r The first time we paid almost 400 USD for the treatment and some antibiotics of our two bunnies. Additionally he wanted to operate one bunny on a cut she got and charge over 600 USD for the surgery. When we did not opt for the surgery Dr. Mitchell made clear that it is a life threatening situation. At home we cleaned the area and put a band aid on the cut (which just stayed in place overnight) to cover the skin flap. It healed perfectly in one week by itself and our bunny is happy and healthy again.\r \r The second time one bunny had an abscess on her cheek. Dr. Mitchell told us special lab tests are needed to determine which antibiotic will help (for 200 USD), the drainage of the abscess would cost over 900 USD and most likely won't resolve the problem and will recur. The most humane would be to euthanize the animal. We love our bunnies very much and wanted a second opinion. The Research Pet Hospital charged us 90 USD for nothing (except the phone call with the diagnosis).\r \r We took our pet to the Black House Creek Animal Hospital and what a difference! For 288 USD the abscess was drained and antibiotics given. We went daily, even on Sunday, to get everything flushed out, they charged 10 USD per session! Everyone was very caring and two weeks later our bunny was fine!\r \r I do not know if the other vets at Research Pet Hospital are more caring, but Dr. Mitchell is definitely just after the money, right away suggesting surgery and expensive lab work. We are very happy that we didn't get intimidated and got a second opinion. Otherwise we would not have our beautiful bunny anymore! more

Dear Dr. Skellenger, \r I wanted to thank you for your kindness in taking care of Paco. You were so kind and caring of our feelings, as well as your care of her. I hope you don't feel slighted because we made the decision to take her to Texas A&M for the necropsy. They said they could use her tissues for future research, and if we could help in any way to further the research of this horrible disease we felt we should. They can also do testing on the rest of our birds after the first of the year, testing blood and feces, to see if there is any trace of the PDD, etc. The pain we feel is tremendous, as well as the fear we have for all the rest of our birds. Paco's mate keeps calling for her, which i also very hard. But I thank you for all our help, deep concern for her and your caring for Mark & I, the reassurance that we did all we could was some comfort.\r We think the world of you and have recommended you to our friend... who also has birds 38 to date. I’m sure she will be in touch with your office should the need arise. Please have a wonderful and safe holiday... And thank you again.\r Much Thanks,\r Marty and Betsy Scott more

Research Pets is the best place for our dogs. From grooming to treatment, the services are top notch. We wouldn't want to bring our dogs to a different clinic. more

Won't Go Back 10/1/2010

Our vets, Dr. Anderson and Dr. Schroeder, closed their Milwood Veterinary Clinic practice and partnered with Research Pet & Bird Hospital. Milwood was our neighborhood veterinary clinic and we always felt very comfortable with them. We had been going there since 1993. Milwood had a great staff. We always received friendly, caring, customer service and excellent veterinary care for our pets. Our dog requires particular attention due to an ongoing issue. more

My pets love Dr. Reeves 7/16/2010

This Animal hospital is absolutely amazing. I'm a dog groomer and I ask many of my customers who they would recommend most of them suggested Research Pet & Bird. When my guinea pig was sick and near death Dr. Reeves took excellent care of her! She was so sweet and gentle with her, as were the vet techs She gave me two very reasonable and helpful choices to may in regards to her medications and cost. They called to make sure she was doing alright before her follow up visit. I just cannot thank them enough for helping me get my baby back in good health. Now she is big and happy and I would recommend them to anyone who asked. As for the people that claim that this place is too pricey: i'm 23. I'm not a millionaire. I have also been to other vets in the area with lower prices-and lower standards. For the first time I feel like I actually know less about what may be wrong with my pets than my vet does. I have met so many vets that will GOOGLE information for me. I can do that at home! I wan more

Great vet clinic/hospital 7/5/2010

We have been taking our 6-7 cats to this clinic for 18+ yrs. We have seen some of the other vets in the clinic but our favorites are Dr Skellenger , Dr Clinton, and Dr Lewelle.. When we have seen some of the other doctors and vet techs who we did not care for, all we had to do is tell the front staff and they changed us to a different doctor immediately and took our complaints seriously. Pros: front and back staff, doctors, office Cons: no after hour care except at emerg. clinic more

Lucky Find! 5/26/2010

We have been nothing but completely staisfied with the staff and service at Research Pet and Bird Hospital. We were not exactly looking for a dog, but while visiting a ranch in the HIll Country our dog found us! We have been taking him to the clinic for vet care and grroming (Randi is awesome) and have really been happy with the level care. The staff are all well trained and really helpful and friendly.\r The BEST part has been finding our trainer, Ruben! Our dog, Lucky came to us lacking some of his social skills. Ruben has been working with Lucky (and us!) for a couple of weeks and we have noticed a huge change in his behavior (and ours!) already. Ruben has taken the time to really get to know the dog as well as us. He is super skilled and has a great personality. He is helping us tackle some really challenging behaviors including aggression towards other animals and bikes. \r We plan to use the boarding facilities while we are on vacation and have complete confidence that our Lucky wi more

Excellent Veterinary Care 4/22/2010

My cherished relationship with Dr. Skellenger and the staff at Research Pet & Bird Hospital started about a decade ago and is still going strong to this day. Dr. Skellenger's knowledge and dedication to his patients and their owners is second to none. Here's my story... My dog Barkley (the love of my life) and I started out seeing Dr. Skellenger for routine exams and dental cleanings when needed. As Barkley got older, I learned the importance of the "Health Plan", which is simply a more comprehensive set of routine tests to make sure all of his systems were functioning properly. Through the years, the test results showed some changes and with medication we were able to slow the aging process and keep Barkley as healthy as a puppy! Dr. Skellenger was truly instrumental in prolonging Barkley's quality of life for many additional years. Honestly, without Dr. Skellenger I would have lost Barkley years ago. Unfortunately, Barkley had to be put to rest this past September, which was in a word, devastating! Dr. Skellenger stood by us and was so compassionate during this difficult time. Pros: Very Knowledgable, Caring, Warm, & Friendly Cons: None more

There's a sucker born every minute! 1/5/2010

The only reason I went to this clinic is that they are part of Pet Assure, a discount plan. The only reason I am part of Pet Assure is that I have two dogs; one who is a senior, and one who was born with two congenital defects: subluxated patellas and seizures - a double whammy! Needless to say, insurance is out of the question due to pre-existing conditions. Pros: Veterinarian seemed relatively knowledgeable Cons: They are all salesmen there more

Research Pet & Bird Hospital is... 12/27/2009

Dr. Paul Skellenger is hands down the best vet I have ever gone to (and I've tried many). He treats my animals like his own. He reads up on the latest techniques. He knows I am interested in vet medicine and explains things in details so I understand exactly what is going on. He tells you the options, explains the pros and cons and never pushes any procedure. Pricing is up front and detailed for any extensive work. They have additional experts outside of the hospital that they will call in when needed (for example and ultrasound specialist that is so wonderful I have even considered going into that field). I've been going for 15+ years after having a horrible experience with a vet that told me I didn't know anything about vet medicine (I did my homework) and proceeded to show me why with a document over 20 years old. Needless to say that vet was wrong and wouldn't admit it. Dr. S. diagnosed a large kidney tumor immediately on my bunny. We had a weird issue with one of our cats and on more

Best Vets in Austin 11/16/2009

My little girl has 2 new best friends - Dr. Skellenger & Dr. Lewellen. She is getting older in age and yet they never see her like that. They see her as my baby dog and treat her as if she is in the beginning of her life. I have been taking her to see them since I first moved to Austin almost 8 years ago and wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. We have always received friendly and prompt service whether it's a simple vacine or a tumor in the ear. They have always treated her as if she was their own pet and me as a friend. I strongly urge anyone looking for a new vet to visit this clinic!!! Pros: Warm, Friendly, Knowledgable & Caring Staff Cons: Have yet to find one more

Terrible Vets 10/19/2009

I took my dog here when she was in pain and having trouble walking, and the Dr. (whose specialty was orthopedic surgery) recommended $2000 worth of surgery to open the channel in her spine even though the xrays showed minimal if any arthritis there. I took her to Westgate, and they immediately found a softball-sized tumor on her spleen by simple palpitation, which was even more obvious when the xrays were sent there from RP&BH. I would never take an animal to RP&BH again. Absolute incompetents. Pros: None Cons: Complete misdiagnosis more

great place to take your pets 7/28/2009

they took care of my pet that was on deaths door and brought him back to life!!! They work with me on cost and gave many great ideas to help with my pet! I have been to all kind of vets. These guys are 5 stars in my book. Pros: will work with your cost and pet Cons: none more

Excellent Service 7/15/2009

Picture this...bird sitting (African Grey & Sun Conure) for folks in Paris, France when Sat morning I awake to blood splatters around the AG cage. I call RPBH & although I've never owned a pet, never used this hospital, they told me to bring him in right away. Dr Skellenger not only took care of the broken blood feather but explained that this was not an uncommon occurrence. He took excellent care of Fernando and lessened my anxiety tenfold. I RECOMMEND Dr. Skellenger and his staff. They have wonderful bedside manners and provided exceptional service! more

Excellent Vets 3/16/2009

Started using Dr Skellenger after another vet in town did not treat my dog with its best interest. I was very pleased with the clinic and the vets knowledge of medicine. They always spell out what the treatment is and other options, give you a detailed cost of it before treatment. Many times, they will work with you when there is a money problem. Dr. Skellenger is a wonderful vet who takes all the time you want and loves to teach the patients owners all they want to know. He answers all questions and never rushes you. This clinic is a great place to take any pet that is loved and will receive the best treatment possible. Also they offer a senior citizen discount if you ask for it. more

Do not take your pets here! 8/5/2007

I only give this place one star because there is no lower choice. The vet I saw does not have her named listed, and honestly, I don't remember it, but I have never had a worse experience with a vet. They recommended treatment for my rabbit that would have probably cost her life. Luckily, I followed my instincts and went to another vet for a second opinion. Too bad I had already waister nearly $150 on the poor treatment they offered at Research Blvd. Pet and Bird. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Pros: None Cons: Nearly cost my bunny's life more

Best Clinic in Austin 3/18/2007

My pets have been seeing Dr. Morelli and Dr. Weirauch for a year and a half now and my fiance's family has been bringing their animals here for years. I always receive a warm greeting at the door and Dr. Weirauch and Dr. Morelli are extremely knowledgable and have the best bedside manner. They always make my pets feel welcome and I know that they are receiving the best possible care. Pros: Warm enviornent, knowlegable staff more
