Rein's Deli

This City Search seem a fraud, it just deleted my 3rd attempt at comment here. Granted, first one evaporated when apple's Safari crashed, (most current version by the way, v5.0.5), but the last 2, now 3 ( I was replying what a Joke here and when finished, found it only allows a very limitied 500 not words but Cahacters!) deletions were due to interference by ads here that don't have a close buttons, don't move when they cover up what you're reading or trying to weigh in on from ecperience. We write for the public and business' welfare. currently this pane is now partially covered by the text from some other review, I can't read it and can't see what I'm trying to enter here, a 4th attempt at a=saying something for you to use. Apparently this City Search is more interested in advertisers' domination of the screen than allowing dialog on topics you've visited w/ the promise of insight for, no wonder there hasn't been a review since 2006 (m/b ones later, i can't see the dates on the 2 under the panel i'm writing in because it also doesn't move!). Had valuable info about Rein's and dining in general for Hartford area, three times I've written it and it's gone. Just be careful, it appears that there's a priority problem here; don't think this site allows comments, just its advertisers' ads anymore! Covering what we're reading w/ immovable ads!, What is that?! then the comment is finally crafted and I'm told only 500 characters, there's no countdown,no indication until you're done, 500 chars comes to under 100 words commenting on an existing comment. This site has been deleting my attempts at comments, everytime I've tried to move things so I can see what the heck i'm doing, carefully worded help to consumers like you and me and businesses that deserve it, complimenting those who've earned it, kicking poor performer into motivation to improve and helping the public not get stung! all this from one who's eaten recently in: all around Los Angeles a lot, and a few visits to places like S.F.; Seattle; S.D.; Boston; ME, along the coast; Northampton , New Orleans - just the French Quarter; Denver and NYC. and Phoenix; oh and Chicago, and HI, Maui most recently. Maybe I had something to say. Besides,I'm a commercial interior architect, I design and evaluate restaurant intriors for owners. You bet i had something to say, they kept making it disappear. so now how do you feel about thi site, maybe more of a pure ad space at his point. Wow. I was staying at the hotel next door and was excited to see something so close open late. I came in the first night, waited to be seated (although plenty of staff available), then proceeded to have my meal. Second night, same. Last night, I walked past 3 employees, waited at the podium for about 6 minutes before a COOK had someone seat me, although there was a girl sitting at the counter right next to me! Sat down, ordered, got my food. I told the waitress I would have another beer after I ate. But she never came. Although there were about 4-5 girls on the floor, they were all more interested in filling up sugars and running the vaccuum then taking care of the customer. I decided to just cash out, so I went up to the register, told them I did not even have my bill yet. At this time, I think I may have been the only customer in the restaurant, with plenty of servers, and no service. It was probably around 9:50 pm I arrived, probably close to 11 that I left, so its not like everyone was waiting for me so they could leave. I never did get a beer after my food, because I just sat there. Then who I believe was the manager, after expressing my concerns to him, asked who the server was. Then said ""Oh, her"". And that was it. Horrible customer service, horrible. I perosonally will not be back, which is sad because I am staying at the hotel next door for a week. I wondered why a restaurant with supposedly great food and a good beer selection would be empty so late in the evening. And I found out why. more

OK, I grew up in the Bronx and ate Jewish deli pretty much all the time every week from the time I was a small child. I am now 50 years old and living in Connecticut. That said, I am a ""tough room"" when it comes to such deli. In spite of that, Rein's has my heart for satisfying the memory of my youth. Dining here is like stepping into a time machine - Like going back to a deli in the Bronx circa 1972! OK, it's not Katz's or Carnegie when it comes to the pastrami and rye, but what on earth is even close to that? I don't expect a place like Rein's, with it's apple-cheeked, blonde, blue eyed staff to live up to that (I still laugh at that given that I'm used to a 60-something balding, paunchy Jewish man wearing a gray jacket). Especially not in Vernon of all places! But on the other hand, considering where it is and who is preparing the food, this is pretty good stuff, and pretty authentic. I appreciate the entrees that take me back to my youth. Where else can you get kasha varnishkes anywhere in this area? Or sour pickles that are EXACTLY like I remember? Or salad platters like ""back in the day"" with a scoop of tuna salad, potato salad and cole slaw (which are all very good, BTW). Or S&S cheesecake (which is made in the Bronx)? Or borscht with sour cream? Most people around here don't even know what that stuff is. So I have to appreciate Rein's as the labor of love that it is, and a ""facsimile"" of my youth. The food is just on that side of authentic to blend into my memories of what the real thing tastes like like an impressionist painting. My Dad still lives in NY and although he goes to Kosher delis in his neighborhood, he still prefers Rein's. You can't beat the prices compared to NY delis. You can live with some of the meat not being quite as fabulous as a result. It is still good. There is plenty more on the menu that is just as good as NY deli and prepared exactly as it should be. I can't believe how hard some people are to please! Pros: A step back in time, Food great, just like the old days Cons: none! more

This place serves great deli fare, period. The service is alright. Sometimes during peak times you have to wait for a seat. But the pastrami is to die for. The pickles are free! This place is strategically located between Boston and NYC. Great place to stop prior to finishing your trip in either direction. I live in Pennsylvania now but always stop in here when returning to Boston roots. Pros: Food, Food Selection, Free Pickles Cons: Nothing. more

Im from an area where we have good jewsih delis on every corner. I researched this one to try to find an equivalent. The business, service , and menu choices were the same. The pickles on the table were reminicent of the famous Carnegie deli in NY. This is where the similarities stop. The food was good, dont get me wrong. The sadwiches were nothing compared to NY delis ( even back home in the detroit area) they were about 1/2 the size. And if you are extpecting the double baked jewish rye...give up. its regular bread you could get in the grocery store. Whats a deli without that???? Its awesome that this place is open tio midnight everynight!! I evem asked a server if they had knishes.. they said .. whats that? argh Pros: its the only deli in the area Cons: small sandwiches, no jewish rye bread, BUSY BUSY more

Driving to Boston from New York? Stop for some great New York style deli sandwiches. They brine their own corned beef a pastrami. Excellent home style food and a wait staff with a little bit of a New York edge. A bustling place with some great sweets to take along for the last miles of your journey. We eat at Rein's often. The sandwiches, though not up to the standards of the great NYC delis ,are nevertheless very good. The hot dishes like franks and beans and potato pancakes are great. Rein's Deli is the best sandwich deli shop in Connecticut. However, you don't need me telling you that when looking at the positive reviews from sandwich lovers and critics alike. After entering Rein's, you will notice a beautiful display of fresh fish, bread, and meats ready for the taking. A cornucopia of displays full of the old times and the present history of Rein's accompany the ""deli"" atmosphere. Their colossal sandwiches are hard to miss when you are walking by other patrons that have been served their order. Roast beef, liverwurst, turkey, chicken, soups, potatoes, fries, and any other type of toppings are part of the ultimate sandwich. Their high popularity is a cause of celebration and perhaps the occasional waiting period. Don't fret though, because once that the sandwich, chowder, and ice creams have been served, you will forget about all your troubles. ENJOY! This is the best resuaturant in the Connecticut area. I have friends from around the country that travel just to eat there, especially their fresh dill pickles!!! more
