This is one of my Portland favorites. The food is excellent and the drinks are great too. The service has always been exceptional as well. If you're willing to spend a little bit ...

Excellent food! No knife needed for the ribs, they fell apart with a fork. Our waitress was fabulous, very friendly! We reserved a booth based on prior recommendations and I'm glad we did, the atmosphere is noisy. I will eat here again and recommend it to others. Thanks for making my Birthday celebration a hit! Pros: Flavorful food Cons: Noise more

Finally 4/24/2006

I took some out of town business partners to Roux last week. Selfishly I had been wanting to go there, so I saw this as the perfect opportunity and was not disappointed. Arrived early to have a cocktail, loved the fun drink menu and the vibe. The service was great and the food was fabulous. So nice to have unique dishes with good flavors but not so rich it drives you to the Tums bottle upon returning home. Appreciated the portion size, just right. Most of all found it really refreshing to go someplace in the city that didn't taste like every restaurant in the Pearl. Love it, I'll be back soon! Pros: Food, Service, Variety Cons: Skinny Wine List more

Great Food and exceptional drinks. 4/17/2006

Visited Roux for the second time and was greatly impressed once again. Last time I went it was the second day of business and it was a bit harried, but the food was excellent. This time it is great to see that it has gotten some of the bugs worked out. Very friendly wait staff, the cocktails are amazing and so is the food. A new favorite. more

Roux Rocks 4/9/2006

(My boyfriend likes this title) I took my boyfriend here for his birthday, and it was absolutely perfect. We requested a booth, as recommended by previous reviewers. It was very roomy and comfortable, and made for a lovely, private meal. Our service was outstanding: Our waitress Rebecca was very friendly and attentive, and the bus staff was equally great. The food was amazing, portions ideal (except for dessert, which was HUGE, but there are worse things in life...). Overall, our experience was outstanding, and I plan on bringing my family here when they visit. Pros: Everything Cons: none more

brunch 4/5/2006

I have been to Roux for dinner and had a great time. So I decided to try brunch. FANTASTIC FOOD! Kudos to chef Scott Ketterman and crew. The biscuits and gravy made me melt. The crawfish omelette was just spicy enough and those potatoes are divine. I was however completly annoyed by the staff asking me every five minutes if I needed something of if everthing was alright. Yes do a walk by, yes refill my coffee, but to the guy that was our waiter, LEAVE ME ALONE! It's the weekend for heavens sake! I want to relax, not be pushed into ordering more food, or signing up for some mailing list. The portions are big enough and the food is excellent. Let me relax and enjoy my weekend brunch. Thank you. Pros: Fantastic food, bright and airy feel Cons: staff are too helpful more

Vegetarians and neighbors not welcome 4/4/2006

It is difficult to imagine a restaurant in Portland in 2006 of this caliber not having a single vegetarian entree. Is this due to malice or lack of imagination? As an Overlook resident, I was thrilled to find out a new restaurant was going in two blocks from my front door. Unfortunately, Roux management seemed interested in the spot mainly for its cheap real estate. Instead of a resource for our (mostly working class) neighbors, they have brought us nothing but parking problems and traffic troubles. The Bon Temps deli may be an effort to serve the locals, but it's had one false start already. I'm hoping round two is a better effort to serve the hoi polloi. All that said, I've got to say the chocolate sundae was great. But I won't return or recommend Roux until they make at least a token effort to make vegetarians feel welcome. Pros: deserts, location Cons: no veggie food, price more

Wonderful 3/30/2006

My husband and I had dinner on 3/30/06, and had a wonderful time. Our servers name was Jeneen who was both helpful and very professional. The Acadiana drink I had was refreshing and very good. We had the grilled shrimp appetizer, soup, salad and two great dinners. I was suprised at the large portions. The roasted pineapple and coconut sorbet was out of this world. My husband even loved it. I can't wait to go back and try all the dishes. Pros: large portions, great service, clean restrooms more

It was Okay 3/23/2006

Service and atmosphere were actually pretty damn good. The apetizers could use a little work. They were a little pricy for how they tasted. Not very good. The dessert, however, was enjoyable. more

Surprise 3/19/2006

After being seated Chevonne our Waitress comes over and introduces herself, i love Waitresses with good memories, she was delightful, she even added that french style Omlettes are a little runnie and would i like them firm, you have a wonderful place and great people working for you, my Palate is yours forever. Earnest more

East side rules 3/16/2006

Finally, we tried the East Side for some eats. So many great places and Roux is one of them. Food is hard to beat, not that far from home. Crossing the River and be scarey for us West side suburban folks. Great time, opened a whole new area of town. Pros: food Cons: parking more

Bon Journey! 2/28/2006

MAGNIFICENT! We had a wonderful time. We were seated promptly, the staff was wonderful, food excellent. Wine list can be punched up, but for a young restaurant just opening up we completely understand! Can't help but keep raving about the food. It was wonderful and the Chef's wife, the dining room manager, was so sweet! Coming back for a B-Day celebration, definitely! Pros: Staff, Food, Ambiance more

Simply outstanding. 2/25/2006

New to town, and came to Roux this past Tuesday night on a coworker's recommendation. Although we did have a twenty-minute wait for a table (make a reservation), it was undoubtedly the best meal, and experience, that I've had in a long time. The oysters were impeccably fresh and reasonably priced. As entrees go, the cassoulet was just decent, but the sole/crab dish, beef short ribs and bouillabaisse were seriously outstanding. Our outstanding waitress was really what made this place shine, though. She directed us through the menu and wine like a seasoned pro while making us feel like we'd somehow gained an impossibly nice new family member. Do yourself a favor, and ask for Emmaline. Pros: Service., Quality food., Warm welcome. Cons: Crowded., Volume level. more

Red Velvet Cupcakes...OMG!! 2/23/2006

We recently ordered 100 red velvet cupcakes for a party at work... everyone is STILL raving about them, especially the frosting. I have found a new midnight craving! Weekend brunch is also stellar...there is a bit of a wait, but well worth it. I just make sure to have coffee with me while I wait for a table. Ok, yes it's chilly but the building is old and is a former factory...quit complaining and bring a sweater! Pros: Desserts, Cocktails more

Fabulous Creole w/ Creative Flair 2/11/2006

Husband & I tried to get in on a Friday night by walk-in (was told the wait was 1 hr 30!) so we figured we had to try again. Came back the next Friday (reservation). Our server was attentive and knowledgeable, the atmosphere was hip and romantic, and the menu had interesting options. The crab cakes were phenomenal. My Cosmo & husbands whiskey sour were delicious and large. I had the sole, and my husband an all-veggie special, and both were terrific. Bananas foster was a bit of a disappointment, as it isnt made at the table and isnt really foster. Its a small handful of banana slices around three whipped cream-filled crepes. Its a whipped cream crepe with fosters sauce, basically. Wine list was limited, especially on hearty reds like Syrah and Zin (only 3). Overall, a fabulous place that I highly recommend. Make sure you have reservations! Pros: great service, big cocktails, fabulous food Cons: limited wine list, so-so bananas foster more

The food was grubbing! 2/11/2006

We had a great meal at Roux - my boyfriend had the duck and I had the pork - delicious! The grilled prawn appetizer was absolutely delicious as well. Our waiter was a little odd, but very good overall, attentive but not obnoxious. The price for two apps, a salad, two entres, and a dessert totaled $86 without drinks - not bad. Definitely request a booth if you're going, and otherwise, a great meal at a good price. Pros: delicious food, good ambiance Cons: ask for a booth, no bread pudding! more

good job 2/5/2006

Seems kind of a corporate try to be funky but the food was good and the location is close to home. Cons: no parking more

Crappy Service, Yummy Food 2/4/2006

When I called to make a reservation, I was told that we would have to be sure to be done by the time that the next party had reserved our table. This is usually a given, and quite rude to say to a customer, but forgivable. However, what was not forgivable was how rude our waitress was. We waited, and waited, and waited, just to order, while our waitress was less than five feet from our table, ignoring us, talking to her co-workers. After she finally took our order, she continued her conversation the staff before doing anything with our order. We hadn't even been brought drinks yet. This continued throughout the night. At one point, our waitress and two other staff motioned over to our table, and our waitress scowled and rolled her eyes. The food was delish, and the dessert was even better, but the waitress simply sucked. Pros: dinner , dessert, wine Cons: service, service, i froze by the window more

Simply Outstanding! 2/2/2006

Ambiance? Magnificent! Start in the bar and have a cocktail that tastes like your mouth is getting a massage-The Acadiana? Lemon Drop but with a touch of Lavender syrup in it. Dinner: We simply could not decide so we opted for fresh oysters to start which made us want to try everything. I ordered the blue crab and my husband ordered an array of appetizers. Best crab cakes EVER! The fish was delicate and scrumpscious. Our waiter was a wonderful gentleman with a very Irish name: Seamus. He was attentive but not overly so. He made some recommendations on wine and food that gladly we took. Seamus topped off our evening by serving us the desert my husband swore was the best he has ever had (Banana's Foster) with Happy Anniversary written on the plate in yummy chocolate. It was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. Pros: Service, Food, Ambiance Cons: Nothing more

solid new restaurant 2/2/2006

The molassas brined porkchops were juicy, generously portioned and flavorful. The frisee salad was also perfectly dressed. The service was good and inobtrusive. The wine list is a little limited and they need some barrier to block the cold air that blows in every time the door is opened. It was packed but not too noicy. Nice neighborhood restaurant! more

Spinebreakers Book Club Review 2/1/2006

Our book club meets once a month at various restaurants through out the Portland area, this month we chose Roux. The food was absolutely fabulous!! The salad's, vegetables, entree's and desserts were phenominal. We were incredibly impressed with the flavors and presentation of all the dishes. HOWEVER, our service was less than desirable. We were a party of 6 women with reservations, who were seated immediately -which was great. However, it took quite sometime for us to receive our menues and place our drink orders. We had to ask for a dessert menu, no one asked us if we wanted another beverage, or refill on coffee, we had to ask for our bill, AND one of our members never received her dessert. This member cancelled her dessert after waiting way too long. We all agreed we would go back for the food - but the service ................was iffy at best! Pros: food, ambiance Cons: service more

  • In Short
Just a block from the North Interstate train line, this former drapery factory has been transformed into a huge, welcoming neighborhood bistro. The large space is awash in warm neutral colors, with semi secluded booths, closely spaced tables and a hopping bar area. The menu offers genteel Southern favorites like grilled oysters, fried soft shell crab, shrimp Creole and molasses brined pork chops. Desserts are creative takes on classics, like the chocolate dipped donuts with a cup of coffee ice cream.
