I have been a patient of Doctor Smith's for over two years 11/4/2009

I have been a patient of Doctor Smith's for over two years. I know and value him as a doctor, and a trusted friend. He has helped me to get my Diabetes under control, and has given me the inspiration to lose weight. I have recently lost 22 pounds and brought my blood sugar levels from over 300 to about 80 with his help. I have, and do trust Doctor Smith with every aspect of my health and well being. As well, my children and wife have been under his care. He is without a doubt one of the best Doctors I've ever had the pleasure to deal with. As I am a person who has been a diabetic, and have had to deal with being overweight for the past ten or eleven years, I have had to deal with many Doctors. None of them could compare to the way Doctor Smith conducts himself professionally, and to the way he has gone above and beyond by befriending me as his patient. I have, and will, trust him for years to come. As a regular patient of Doctor Smith's, I know he has been called in the middle of the night for patient emergencies, and has gone to their homes as opposed to them having to try and go to the emergency room at the hospital. How many doctors can you find that will do that for you? I know if I needed him in an extreme emergency, he would show up to help me or anyone else in my family. That is a service that you just can't put a price on, let alone, find ANY doctors that I know of that cares enough about his patients and friends to do something like that. The other thing I really like about the clinic is that I can't think of a time I've had to wait more than a couple of minutes in the “waiting” room to be seen. We all know what it's like when you visit a doctor…the wait alone can be an hour. If you want to get the proper attention with a physician that you've been looking for, drop on in and visit Doctor Smith. I promise you, it will be like no other Doctor visit you've ever experienced. Sincerely, DL more

Dr Smith's Office when others couldnt 11/2/2009

We recently called as well as visited the AmPm ER in Powell. From the time we spoke with the nurse and then the Dr two things stood out to us. Different and Better! We had previously made several phone calls pleading with our local doctor's office who couldn't work my family member in until a month later. Not so at AmPm. When I called I spoke with the receptionist who not only calmed our fears over the phone but also she was able to get us in right away with very little wait! We had the whole crew there (kiddo and all) but that wasn't a problem for the Dr. We were amazed at the thoroughness of the exam and the accuracy of the diagnosis. It was different actually having a choice of different treatments and for us to make the best choice for our family (and our budget!) They also helped us with all of the paperwork we needed and gave good advice on how to file our own claim with insurance. My loved one has since fully recovered thanks to Dr. Smith! We were blown away also when they followed up our visit with a phone call just to see if we were better. They really did care!!! We highly recommend them not only as an alternative to a family doctor but whenever anyone needs to get medical help right away without a long wait! more

Powell Major Rip Off 7/2/2008

I called Dr.Nelson Smith’s office and was told to bring 600.00 for opiate detox program. When I got there on Wednesday, June 25 they took my 600.00. I signed a paper that said no refunds. Then the doctor met with me and wants 2390.00 for one week of treatment before he would start a detox program. He wrote a prescription for Suboxone for 2 days and was told to come back in 2 days. Two days later on Friday, June 27 he writes a prescription for 2 more days and says on the fifth day of treatment, Monday I would start a new week and he needs 1750.00 more or I can pay for 2 more days of treatment to get back to Wednesday. He was charging 8400.00 for this treatment and I now get the same treatment for 500.00 a month. This doctor is taking advantage of people that are trying to straighten up their life and somebody needs to do something about it because this is a disgrace to all the other doctors that are actually trying to help people come off of drugs. This doctor is going to cause somebody to hurt them self or him. AVOID THIS QUACK!!!!!!!!! Ripped a New One more

Clinic in the news 6/7/2008

here it a news article about the this "great" clinic located on wate's website KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- Over the last two months, five people have called 6 On Your Side to complain about the services they received from a doctor at an emergency clinic. This report examines the complaints of two women who went to that doctor. Last May, Bonnie Berry accidentally slashed her finger on a staple protruding from a garden stake and needed medical attention. And in September, Emma Salmon, a big Vols fan, didn't feel good. Her daughter and son urged her to see a doctor so they could get together to watch the Vols play on pay-per view that weekend. Both women went to Powell Minor ER, a walk-in clinic. They say Dr. Bryan Smith told them he takes cash or credit card payment only, no insurance. But Emma questioned the receipt for $290 handed to her before going in the exam room. "When I saw that, I said, 'Hold it, what's this for?' He said, 'A consultation.' I said, 'There's been no consultation.' He said, 'I let you in the door didn't I?" Emma said she immediately went out the door, left the clinic and saw another doctor. Bonnie Berry was also initially charged $290. The charge was made to a credit card belonging to her sister, Martha Green. Remember, Bonnie had a cut finger but she says the doctor told her she also has high blood pressure. "The bottom line was, he wanted an additional $1,400 and something dollars to treat me. I told him that I couldn't afford that. I just wanted my finger stitched." Unwilling to pay an extra $1,400 for stitches and high blood pressure medicine, Bonnie left Dr. Smith's office and went to the Parkwest Hospital ER. The cost for stitches there was just over $600, according to records. 6 On Your Side called Dr. Smith requesting an on-camera interview. He refused, but said to put our questions in writing. We emailed them to him but Smith said he couldn't comment about Emma or Bonnie's cases because of federal privacy rules. He would need a signed agreement from them. Emma and Bonnie both signed a HIPAA privacy agreement. 6 On Your Side had them notarized and sent to Dr. Smith. After nearly two weeks, he has not responded to our questions. But there's more to this story. Bonnie's sister, Martha Green, showed 6 On Your Side a nine page letter Smith wrote in August to Green's credit card company after she disputed the charge of treatment to her sister's finger. In the same letter, Dr. Smith claims he spent an hour and a half treating Bonnie. "He calls us both ingrates," Martha says. Dr. Smith also sent Bonnie an invoice in August for $6,365 because she refused to pay for treatment. He threatens alleged fraud and theft. Frightened by possible legal action, Bonnie paid Smith personally. "I think that the $290 fee was steep for soaking my finger in a pan and being asked medical questions," she says. Cindy Heiskell received an email from Dr. Smith after she wrote him saying she intends to complain to the medical association over the way he treated her mother, Emma Salmon. "The greeting says, Dear Cindy Heiskell, area arrogant twit." Besides calling her a twit in his email, Dr. Smith says, "Credits are issued at the doctor's discretion. Your case is a bust and may be reason for us to bill you further for your insane troubles." Cindy received a second email, this time to her business computer. She's a teacher. In it, Dr. Smith says, "I know those above you in the school system's chain of command." "Well it sounds to me like he's threatening me. It sounds like he's trying to get me to be quiet about this matter," Cindy says. The Better Business Bureau has received seven complaints against Dr. Smith. They're about billing practices and services. He has resolved two complaints. Legally, there's not much patients can do about service once they signed agreements like the ones Bonnie and Emma signed. With their signatures on the papers, Dr. Smith calls them a patient's promise to pay agreement. "Should I default by leaving in the middle of the visit, left completed or uncompleted, with the physician's declaration of 'against medical advice,' I promise to pay Bryan Smith, MD," the agreements say. In a statement, Dr. Smith's attorney claims the patients were charged a consultation fee for spending time with the doctor and are not due a refund. Emma Salmon and Bonnie Berry say Dr. Smith did tell them, you're leaving against my advice. So what can patients do? Before you sign anything, take time to read agreements, especially before handing over your credit card to anyone, even if it's a doctor. more

Horrible 6/7/2008

developing an ear infection & not having insurance, I was forced to use this ridiculous excuse for a clinic with its quack "dr" who charged me $40 just to see him, and $40 for a prescription for Strepthroat & not an ear infection. The entire time he tried to sell me vitamins & wanted me to buy a steroid shot for $400. I later went to another clinic, which was wonderful & less expensive, including tests & a prescription (This visit included a dr who actually asked questions & listened to my answers, had a clean office area). If this retard for a dr would have actually done any tests, he would have realized that I did not have streppthroat at all & the prescription he wrote for me to the tune of $40 would not have treated my severe ear infection anyway. Later, when I was trying to get insurance, they first said they could not release my medical information unless I signed a form, so I signed it & mailed it back. They said that they never received it, so I requested & sent it again. Again, they said that they did not receive. When sending this same form again, they said that it had to be notarized, then in the same conversation they said that they never released medical records. Im sure if I would have layed down a 50 dollar bill, they would have given me the records. Also, after using my debit card at their office, "someone" went on an online spending spree hours after leaving their office. Im not saying it was anyone in their office (all 2 of them), but it was too much of a coincidence for me. I hope "whoever" enjoyed their subscription to match.com, because it was canceled within hours. They do not care about their "patients", only the cash they receive from them. Im not saying that its wrong to make money or to charge for your services, but the way that it is done by this clinic is very shady. I would advise ANYONE to avoid this clinic, unless you have money to throw away & are a hypochondriac & intend to be preyed upon by this prehensile clinic. Just as a side note: The "review" by John S. sounds like the rants of an arrogant dr trying to cover up his identity. There is a news article about the good doctor at www.wate.com wherein you find that his clinic has 7 outstanding complaints against it (as of 2006) for fraud & where he personally calls his "patients" ingrates, twits and things of the like....great dr. more

Practicing Medicine - Not Insurance 12/23/2007

I am tired of seeing spoiled People twist and manipulate the Truth. Tell some People the simple word "No" and they'll break their neck to hurt you in any way they can...writing crap on the internet, or any other way possible. I know better about this one highly ethical and competent doctor today; you can't beat the treatment or the experience anywhere. And I can't believe the position so many take today on the issue of simply having to pay for their own healthcare. No, it's not "cheap"! You don't want "cheap" in everything, really. Grow up America! Nothing is FREE in this life ...except lies, mud and slander. For that, we have "M.F." [see complaint about "Powell Minor ER" by this person] to produce for us - in quantity. I have been to see this doctor many times. He has a very interesting take on today's screwed up U.S. medical system (of insurance) - in which he has taken the very difficult stance of "not participating" in these scams today. Through this 8 year process, Dr. Smith has been a Pioneer in bringing the true Art of Medicine back to where it had always been before - in the hands of the Doctor (i.e. the only Person licensed and capable to make your professional medical decisions today). Many Doctors would like to do what Dr. Smith is doing today, and he has been a leader in this free market medicine field for a very long time, as well. The CBS National News broadcasted Dr. Smith's story - as a "solution to the problems in medicine" some years ago. But the unfortunate thing is that only a few Doctors have chosen to follow the path of Dr. Smith's unique Old-Fashioned Professional Care example today...because it is tough due the malice of guys like "M.F."* and due the fact that only those Doctors who can stand the pressures of the insurance companies working against them (which is no small pressure) seem to be able to do this for very long or at all. *The pressures coming to these brave "non-participating" Doctors, I am told, through malicious and hateful false comments and accusations - like the one "M.F." (appropriate initials, huh?) did place in this same section against Dr. Smith - are challenges most Doctors are not willing to endure, much like a higher quality of Presidential Candidate might opt out of running for that office due the slander and poison they would most certainly face, in their run. Understand this is common practice for a certain malicious breed in our present society; they use "third party" complaining systems to fraudulently harm those trying to go against today's illegitimate system, to do good. Not only do these Persons refuse to understand what good doctors like Dr. Smith are attempting to do - for us all - but they want to harm these same Doctors with their lies and twists of the truth...because they can! After 8 years of enduring such comments, on occasion, Dr. Smith believes these poisonous types thoroughly enjoy the harm they cause. Judy's Book ought to be ashamed to place such tripe on their website without first making certain such garbage is true. Dr. Smith's office confirms Judy's Book has never tried to corroborate this material with Dr. Smith's office, and in fact, they could not do so because such things are not true at all - the things "M.F." now claims as fact, etc. "Fraud" is therefore being committed by both Judy's Book and "M.F." (who ever this unnamed person is - hiding under assumed names on complaint websites on the internet - how brave!) Dr. Smith notes this garbage comes from some in his unusual type practice, post payment, when these cowards fail to receive something they demand or expect, illegitimately, at his office. Go figure. They either can't handle the word "no" (sometimes given by the office, when necessary, because they are able to stand up against certain illegitimacies their business just seems to attract, etc.) OR whenever Persons "wish it to be free" (care), and so either way go and proceed to host a fire storm of lies and innuendo against anyone refusing to cow to their (third party levied) threats and demands. Dr. Smith just has the fortitude and proper office protocols NOT to cave in to such accusatory fraud today. He asks this Snipe to produce not only his real name but any proof he believes he has that might properly support his manipulation and lies told about the doctor - at any time. Hint: He cannot. According to the many experiences I have now had at Dr. Smith's office, it is quite obvious to anyone with 1/2 a brain that whenever asked to punch in one's own PIN number (see "M.F." complaint), after giving your card to anyone while making a purchase - at any location anywhere, mind you - you are never simply "verifying [your] debit card pin" (whatever that stupid statement means, per "M.F." - which sounds like an idiot's rant, quite frankly), but rather, you are clearly authorizing a real purchase to be made to the location you are presently standing, for a specific item or service, which is set clearly as the amount shown right there in front of your face - displayed on that same PIN pad you are now holding and punching in your personal private PIN number, to accept. If you are stupid, you may not understand what you are doing, but truly, that is no fault of the guy standing there selling you his services. Then, claiming you were somehow duped or have become the victim of "fraud" after making such an obvious transaction, supposedly knowing nothing about it, is simply a bold face lie! Who was that guy standing there conversing all about this transaction before and during that episode? Who punched in you PRIVATE PIN NUMBER that day? No, the only "fraud" committed around this guy (i.e. "M.F.") is that which he himself is attempting to commit - onto Dr. Smith! Twisting the facts may seem to make your position look better, but there is One who knows the Truth and will make it right, in the end, beware. Even ole' Abe Lincoln said it best when he said, "You can say it, but that doesn't make it so"l! In today's times, scams like these harm others without those others being able to defend their own honest actions. Dr. Smith's office only noticed this posting nearly a year after the (false) fact being posted by "M.F.". So, this action by "M.F." ought to carry with it at the very least the burden of proof to support it...which it does not. "Judy's Book" ought to be ashamed to have ever allowed that false complaint, which is libel, on their site (and we shall see if they allow this rebuttal to be posted, in full, as well...too). For the record: I have been through this exact same "payment process" at Dr. Smith's office, now, not less than a dozen times, to date... and I will continue to support both myself (via receiving excellent care) and Dr. Smith through the use of his unique and highly competent services, and facility, later, too. I do know the good doctor's good operations procedures quite well, and for those who want it only their way (i.e. "free") it can make these Cheap's very angry, I do guess, as does having to pay for anything of value may elsewhere, as well. The doctor does require that you pay for the services you receive - in a "fee for service" clearly displayed manner, prior to receiving his care, and from the vast number of ways the general public has cheated him over payment in the past, who could blame him for "getting his money upfront"?!! You're going to have to pay for it in a few short minutes anyway, aren't you? Everything about his system of "informed consent" reveals all costs prior to receiving same and allows you to choose to "take it or leave it" without any pressure from Dr. Smith, whatsoever. Such is the only method, in addition, this type of business has to use to recoup its' costs since there are no "third party payors" involved in this "non-participating" (with insurance) business today...thank goodness! Compare this to the insurance company's (and their Plan "Doctor's" or Company "Boys") methods of never informing anyone about how much anything costs prior to treatment (much less giving anyone a personal choice over their own care received)...treating everyone like a number ...after long long waits to be seen and only "allowed" care being offered. Given this, this one doctor now has to have the most "informed consent" process available to any Patient receiving care - on the entire planet! To claim this process is somehow unfair, post (grown up?) acceptance of any service presented to you, in person, by the doctor himself at times (yes, and this must be the biggest crime of the century to some - to be waited on by the doctor, himself - how horrid)! Such a complaint is no different than claiming you should not have to pay for all those items you yourself chose to place in your Walmart buggy while strolling through the store, once arriving at the register. Hey, they don't let you out of their store without paying, as well, do they? The audacity of a Person - to go ahead and receive their urgent care (i.e. plan to take home their Walmart goodies), freely paying as they must for each service (and item), post explanation and acceptance over each, claiming they were somehow dupped into making their own clear choices...is the cardinal sign of one of today's most hideous animals: The Spoiled Consumer! Such a complainer thinks everything ought to either be "on sale" or "free" or "just their way" (including "reversed") - once they complain about it loud enough. No rational or legitimate reasoning necessary...just complaints that raise suspicion, especially elsewhere. Guess what? The Customer is NOT always right...and complaint websites don't change that in the least with their false-shaming postings, either. Bravo to this one doctor for giving only excellent, more available and detailed care, to all those who wish to pay for this brand of old-fashioned medicine today. There is nothing wrong with this Doctor, and in fact, everything right with his method and his care. Don't listen to scum like "M.F." who wish to libel and slander the good doctor's name all over the internet. Taking a stance against the scam of Insurance is what "Fee for Service" Free Market Medicine is all about today. Healthcare, after all, is NOT free...to produce nor to obtain...nor should it be, as well...no matter what this guy or your greasy Politicians tell you about another person's hard-earned profession and actual care. It costs much to be able to produce a "door open to the public" (for you) today, in either Medicine or in any other fair market business, and "free care" enthusiasts OR such "Customer's always right" immature brats are living not in reality but in Socialistic Bliss - if they think such good care grows on trees or is to be given away free. "M.F." would have you believe this doctor cheats People. If you could expect to be treated as well as "M.F." was at Dr. Smith's office, in truth and actuality, as all People have been actually treated at Dr. Smith's office these past 8 years, then you would be treated like a king and "like family" and nothing less...in truth! Dr. Smith has never had a complaint about the excellent care he gives, it should be noted here. So go enjoy the differences Dr. Smith now offers - cuz with jerks like "M.F." swarming around, Dr. Smith might well choose to go do something else that brings him and his family a lot less hassle or wear and tear, not to mention a lot more pay, someday soon, too! Oh, and we should note - Guys like "M.F." never receive their "money back" at Dr. Smith's office. This is due the fact they don't deserve it but even more so because their own "bad behaviors" are so atrocious they need to be taught a lesson: "Lies don't buy you a Refund!" It's about the principle of it all, you understand...not at all unlike having to deal with a world full of 2 y/o's...and the 2y/o can never win...if we're ever going to have maturity come out of these children's inappropriate bad and selfish behaviors...right? John - Witness to the spoiled malicious actions of guys like "M.F." on a medical practice that did nothing wrong...other than be "different". Satisfied Patient of the unfortunately rare "Fee for (Excellent) Service" Old-Fashioned System of (Real Professional) Care. more

PowellMinor ER Ripoff 4/27/2007

PowellMinor ER is a fraudulent ripoff! Avoid it at all costs, pun intended! In January, the receptionist told me, by phone, that the office visit charge would be $50.00, or higher, if lab work and X-rays were done. I scheduled a 2:30 PM appointment, for treatment for a upper respiratory infection. Upon arrival, the doctor was alone, with no one else present. He asked for my debt card and driver's license, which I submitted. The doctor asked me to verify my debt card pin, after he swiped the card in the reader. I typed in my pin, thinking that it was for verification only. The doctor handed me a receipt for $120.00. I asked him if he had just debted my card for $120.00, and he replied, "Yes." So, by fraudulent means, the doctor took $120.00 from me, without my clear authorization. Since I felt so bad from the respiratory infection, and must not have been thinking clearly, I allowed the doctor to examine me for the $120.00, instead of asking him to refund my money. After a quick examination, of under five minutes, the doctor tried to charge me an additional $125.00, to write two prescriptions, for an antibiotic and an expectorant. At this point, I accused the doctor of fraud and demanded a refund of the $120.00. He replied that the $120.00 charge was for the examination only. He would not write the prescriptions unless I paid him an additional $125.00! I walked out, $120.00 poorer but wiser. See for a local news story: http://www.wate.com/Global/story.asp?s=5673091 more

Old Fashioned Care 2/25/2007

I recently visited Powell Minor ER because I was experiencing terrible pain from a sore that would not heal. I was amazed at the fast service I received and the medical treatment options I was offered. After being evaluated by the Doctor, it was determined that my sore could be treated by oral medication (Which could not be guaranteed to keep it from returning or healing) or to have the sore surgically removed. The choice was mine and I had the option of selecting the treatment option I wanted. Although the cost of surgically removing the sore was more expensive, it was the permanent solution to my problem. After some careful consideration, I chose to have the surgery. The doctor performed the surgery at the clinic and although it was a little uncomfortable I was relieved to be on the mend. I would recommend Powell Minor ER to anyone who wants to be treated fairly, cared for without feeling like a cow at a cattle branding, and provided with top quality medical treatment. Personally, I like the pay as you go process at this clinic . . . you know what it will cost and you pay the bill . . . that's it . . . no hassles. more
